    Award for Best Demonstration . Abstract Face detection is the process where machines identify faces within an image or visual field. Face detection is used in analyzing emotions, and even in social networking applications, such as Snapchat. The underlying mechanism of face detection is to locate key landmarks on a person’s face. The goal is to detect faces using a webcam, find the facial landmarks of the detected faces, and overlay customized images relative to the facial landmarks. Machines need to be taught to detect faces. It is crucial to teach the program to identify the different types of jawlines. The program is provided a data model which specifies different combinations of facial landmark positions. The machine is then able to compare the objects seen in its visual field to the data model. Once the machine recognizes the landmarks, it places image overlays across the visual display or mutates the visual display. These images can be stationary across the visual field, or mobile relative to the facial landmarks. The programs built for this project are capable of detecting faces using a webcam, finding the facial landmarks of the detected faces, and overlaying customized images relative to the facial landmarks. Before the programs were created, existing software, toolboxes, and libraries were surveyed. The project’s programs closely resemble Snapchat and Instagram filters. The limitation of the programs built for this project is that they have not been optimized for smartphones; the programs work only on a laptop or a smaller computer, such as the Raspberry Pi. Hence, the programs are not widely accessible to the general public

    Measurement of Solar Spectral Irradiance and Surface Ozone at Carrollton, Georgia, USA, During the Great American Eclipse on 21 August 2017

    Measurements conducted at the University of West Georgia, Carrollton, Georgia, during the time of the solar eclipse of 21st August 2017 demonstrated that the integrated spectral irradiance in defined wavelength ranges in the ultraviolet and visible calculated as a fraction of the total irradiance reached a minimum at maximum obscuration of the Sun, whereas in an infrared range it was maximum. The method of analysis adopted supports the view that the changes in spectral irradiance during highly obscured partial phases is a consequence of limb darkening. In a surface ozone measurement, a minimum in ozone concentration occurred 30 +_ minutes after the instant of maximum obscuration. The observation is explained as a combined effects of change in reaction rates of photochemical generation and degradation of ozone

    Prevalence of vitamin D insufficiency and risk factors for type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease among African migrant and refugee adults in Melbourne

    Migration to industrialised countries poses a &ldquo;double whammy&rdquo; for type 2 diabetes among sub-Saharan African migrant and refugee adults. This population group has been found to be at an increased risk of obesity and type 2 diabetes, which may be further aggravated by inadequate vitamin D status. Thus, this study aimed to describe the demographics of vitamin D insufficiency, obesity, and risk factors for type 2 diabetes among sub-Saharan African migrants and refugees aged 20 years or older living in Melbourne, Australia (n=49). Data were obtained by a questionnaire, medical assessment, and fasting blood samples. The mean serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D level was 27.3 nmol/L (95% CI: 22.2, 32.4 nmol/L); with 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels &lt;50 nmol/L occurring in 88% of participants. Participants displayed a cluster of risk factors for type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease: 62% were overweight or obese, 47% had insulin resistance (HOMA-IR &ge;2), 25% had low density lipoprotein cholesterol levels &ge;3.5 mmol/L, 24.5% had high density lipoprotein cholesterol levels &le;1.03 mmol/L, 34.6% had borderline or high levels of total cholesterol (&ge;5.2 mmol/L), 18.2% had borderline or high levels of triglyceride (&ge;1.7 mmol/L), and 16% had hypertension (systolic blood pressure &ge;140 mmHg or diastolic blood pressure &ge;90 mmHg). These findings suggest that sub-Saharan African migrants and refugees may be at risk of type 2 diabetes and atherosclerosis-related diseases such as ischemic heart disease, stroke, and peripheral vascular disease. Well-designed vitamin D interventions that incorporate lifestyle changes are urgently needed in this sub-population.<br /

    RF Exposure Analysis for Multiple Wi-Fi Devices In Enclosed Environment

    Wi-Fi devices operated inside a metallic enclosure have been investigation in the recent years. A motivation for this study is to investigate wave propagation inside an enclosed environment such as elevator, car, aircraft, and spacecraft. There are performances and safety concerned that when the RF transmitters are used in the metallic enclosed environments. In this paper, the field distributions inside a confined room were investigated with multiple portable Wi-Fi devices. Computer simulations were performed using the rigorous computational electromagnetics (CEM). The method of moments (MoM) was used to model the mutual coupling among antennas. The geometrical theory of diffraction (GTD) was applied for the multiple reflections off the ground and walls. The prediction of the field distribution inside such environment is useful for the planning and deployment of a wireless radio and sensor system. Factors that affect the field strengths and distributions of radio waves in confined space were analyzed. The results could be used to evaluate the RF exposure safety in confined environment. By comparing the field distributions for various scenarios, it was observed that the Wi-Fi device counts, spacing and relative locations in the room are important factors in such environments. The RF Keep Out Zone (KOZ), where the electric field strengths exceed the permissible RF exposure limit, could be used to assess the RF human exposure compliance. As shown in this study, it s possible to maximize or minimize field intensity in specific area by arranging the Wi-Fi devices as a function of the relative location and spacing in a calculated manner
