Control of zootechnology leads to improved Cuttlefish (Sepia officinalis, L.) reproduction performance up to pre-industrial levels

Cephalopods are gaining momentum as an alternate group for aquaculture species diversification, not only because they are a good food source (highly appreciated in some worldwide markets) but they also have the potential to quickly reach a market size. However, there are some bottlenecks impeding the transition of culture technology from the laboratory to industry. One is related to control over reproduction in captivity. The objective of the present experiment was to verify the effects of tanks with different bottom areas/volumes on the reproduction performance of S. officinalis breeding stocks, when sex ratios were controlled a priori; and the food cost associated with such performance when individuals are fed a natural frozen diet. One hundred and ninety two juvenile cuttlefish were used to compare three different round-shaped tanks: one type with 3000L volume and two types with 9000L volume (with differences in bottom areas and water column). Individuals had their sex and maturity stage determined to establish a sexual ratio of 2 female:1 male per tank and assure that cuttlefish were still immature. Biological data was collected during both growth and reproduction stages and until the death of all females in each tank. The experiment lasted nearly 300 days. Temperature differences between tank types were registered during both stages. The optimizing of rearing conditions has allowed for higher growth and a higher amount of cuttlefish available for breeding purposes. A total of 123,751 eggs (in 85 batches) was obtained during this experiment, which is a number that may meet a small scale cuttlefish commercial hatchery facility requirements. The present conditions contributed to a better and predictable reproduction performance in specific 9000L tanks, with values reaching pre-industrial numbers (approximate to 24,000 eggs/tank). Moreover, both the amount of eggs per batch and the overall quality of eggs has increased. Congenital Lobar Emphysema: A Multilobar Presentation

O enfisema lobar congénito é umamalformação rara do tracto respiratório inferior detectada habitualmente nos primeiros meses de vida. Apresenta-se o caso de um lactente, do sexo masculino, de dois meses de idade, internado por suspeita de pneumonia, no qual a segunda radiografia de tórax revelou hipertransparência arredondada no lobo inferior esquerdo, sugestiva de enfisema lobar congénito. A tomografia computorizada torácica mostrou uma imagem quística,multilobar, e a broncoscopia excluiu obstrução brônquica. Foi programada cirurgia para os seis meses de idade, mas aos três meses foi submetido a intervenção cirúrgica urgente por pneumotórax hipertensivo. O exame anatomo-patológico da peça operatória permitiu o diagnóstico de enfisema lobar congénito. Destaca-se a apresentação multilobar e a complicação por pneumotórax

A flexible online apparatus for projectile launch experiments

Physical activity during pregnancy and its effects on fetal parameters in the second trimester

The physical activity (PA) during pregnancy still remains controversial due to the risk and protective effects on the fetal parameters (cephalic perimeter, abdominal perimeter, femur length and fetal weight). The American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) recommends that pregnant women do, at least, 150 weekly minutes of moderate PA during a week (WK). This study aimed to (1) verify the relation between the accomplishment of ACSM guidelines PA and the maternal individual characteristics; (2) verify the relation between accomplishment of these guidelines and the fetal parameters in the second trimester. Prospective study was conducted at Hospital S. João, with a sample of 137 pregnant women. Socio-demographic characteristics and lifestyle factors were assessed via questionnaire. PA was assessed by accelerometry (used for 7 consecutive days) in the second trimester (20–22 weeks). The fetal parameters were assessed by ultrasound between the 20th and 22nd gestational week, always by the same medical. No relation was found between the participants’ individual characteristics and the accomplishment of the ACSM’s recommendations, with p-value for all the variables being >0.05. There is no difference between the fetal parameters in the second trimester of the women who follow the recommendations (p>0.05). The pregnant women’s individual characteristics were not related with the accomplishment of the ACSM’s recommendations. Any relation between the recommendations accomplishment and the fetal parameters in the second trimester was not found and no negative influence was found in the same parameters.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Quisto Broncogénico: Elemento Radiológico Sugestivo

O quisto broncogénico constitui a lesão quística mais comum do mediastino. Descreve-se o caso de uma criança do sexo feminino, de quatro anos de idade, com tosse estridulosa recorrente desde os dois anos e febre de início recente. A radiografia de tórax revelou desvio da linha ázigo-esofágica, o que levantou a suspeita de lesão mediastínica.A tomografia computorizada torácica mostrou lesão mediastínica que foi posteriormente identificada por ressonância magnética como correspondendo a um quisto broncogénico. Três meses depois foi submetida a cirurgia com exérese do quisto e desde então, decorrido um ano, tem estado assintomática. Destaca-se a importância da identificação de referências radiológicas que podem ser relevantes para o diagnóstico de lesões ocupando espaço no mediastino

A novel modular voltage balancing topology for active battery management system

This paper proposes a novel modular voltage balancing topology for an active battery management system (BMS). The proposed topology consists of two power stages. The first stage is composed by a switch network, which is responsible for selecting the battery that will provide energy and the battery that will receive energy. In the switch network, for each battery, are used two cells, which allow the operation with bidirectional current flow and bipolar voltage. The second stage is composed by a capacitor used as energy storage element, which consists in the component used to link both batteries. The switch network control and its interaction with the energy storage element is performed by a digital controller. The Mais Médicos (More Doctors) Program, the infrastructure of Primary Health Units and the Municipal Human Development Index

O presente trabalho tem como objeto central o estudo do contexto em que atuam os profissionais do Programa Mais Médicos. Para isto, a pesquisa utiliza a escala de infraestrutura das UBSs, desenvolvida recentemente por Soares Neto e colegas para aprofundar o conhecimento das relações entre a infraestrutura das UBSs e o IDHM dos municípios que receberam médicos do PMM. Utilizando estatísticas exploratórias e inferenciais, o artigo mostra que das UBSs que receberam médicos do PMM, 65,2% têm infraestrutura de média qualidade e apenas 5,8% delas têm infraestrutura de baixa qualidade. A correlação de 0,50 entre o indicador de infraestrutura e o IDHM aponta para uma tendência moderada de que municípios com baixos IDHMs tenham UBSs mais precárias. Por meio de uma análise de regressão linear múltipla, pode-se inferir que o fator que mais contribui para o aumento do indicador de infraestrutura das UBSs é a renda média municipal. Por outro lado, o fator que afeta negativamente a infraestrutura das UBSs é estar localizada na região Norte ou Nordeste.The main objective of this article was to examine the context in which professionals working within the Mais Médicos (More Doctors) Program operate. This study used the infrastructure scale of primary health units (PHUs), which was recently developed by Soares Neto and colleagues to provide more information regarding the relationship between the infrastructure of PHUs and the Municipal Human Development Index (MHDI) of municipalities that received Mais Médicos Program doctors. Using exploratory and inferential statistics, the article shows that 65.2% of the PHUs that received Mais Médicos Program doctors had medium-quality infrastructure and only 5.8% of them had low-quality infrastructure. The correlation of 0.50 between the infrastructure indicator and the MHDI points to a moderate tendency for municipalities with low MHDIs to have more precarious PHUs. Using multiple linear regression analysis it can be inferred that the main factor that contributed to the increase in the infrastructure indicator of the PHUs was the average municipal income. On the other hand, the factor that negatively affected the infrastructure of the PHUs was being located in the north or northeast regions
