HEAVY METALS IN URBAN PARK SOILS FROM ATHENS, GREECE

Η αστική γεωχημεία είναιένας επιστημονικός κλάδος ο οποίος αναπτύσσεταιτα τελευταία χρόνια κυρίως λόγω των περιβαλλοντικών επιπτώσεων που προκύπτουν από την αστικοποίηση. Η παρούσα εργασία έχει ως στόχο τον προσδιορισμό των συγκεντρώσεων δυνητικά επιβλαβών στοιχείων (PHEs) των επιφανειακών (0-10 cm) εδαφών προερχόμενων από αλσύλια της Αθήνας. Η δειγματοληψία υπαίθρου πραγματοποιήθηκε σε 20 αλσύλια της Αττικής και κάλυψε συνολική έκταση περίπου 200km2 . Αναλύθηκαν 20 εδαφικά δείγματα κοκκομετρίας Mn >Ni≈ Cu≈ Zn> Cr. Τα δεδομένα της έρευνας υποδεικνύουν ότι το έδαφος των αλσυλίων μπορεί να είναι ένας σημαντικός ταμιευτήρας των ανθρωπογενών στοιχείων στο αστικό έδαφοςUrban geochemistry is a scientific discipline which is growing in the recent years mainly because of the environmental impact caused by urbanization. The present study aims to determine the concentrations of potentially harmful elements (PHEs) on surface soils (0-10cm) in Athens parks. Soil sampling was carried out in public park areas within the Athens urban area. Twenty surface soil (0-10cm) samples were collected and the Mn >Ni≈ Cu≈ Zn> Cr. The data indicate that park areas seem to be important sinks of anthropogenic elements in urban soils

Motivational and affective determinants of self-regulatory strategy use in elementary school mathematics

The aim of the study was to investigate the relationships between elementary students’ reported use of self-regulatory strategies in mathematics and their motivational and affective determinants. Participants of the study were 344 fifth- and sixth-grade Greek students. Students were asked to complete self-reported measures regarding the strategies they use to self-regulate mathematics learning, their achievement goals in relation to mathematics, their self-efficacy concerning mathematics learning and achievement, the value they attribute to mathematics as a subject domain and their enjoyment of mathematics learning. Structural equation modelling confirmed a mediation model, that is, students’ mathematics self-efficacy, value beliefs about mathematics and enjoyment mediated the effects of achievement goals on reported strategy use. Results are discussed in terms of implications for elementary students’ self-regulated learning skills. © 2013 Taylor & Francis

The Development and Validation of the “Hippocratic Hypertension Self-Care Scale”

Background: The adoption of self-care behaviors among patients with arterial hypertension (AH) plays an important role in the management of their health condition. However, a lack of scales assessing self-care is observed. We aimed to develop and validate the Hippocratic hypertension self-care scale. Methods: From a pool of questions derived from a literature review, 18 items were included in the scale and reviewed by a committee of experts. Participants indicated the frequency at which they followed the self-behavior prescribed in each statement on a five-point Likert scale. Data were collected between April 2019 and December 2019. Results: A total of 202 consecutive adult patients with AH were enrolled in the study. The internal consistency of the scale was found to be 0.807, using Cronbach’s alpha coefficient. An exploratory factor analysis identified two domains that accounted for 92.94% of the variance in the scale items; however, each sub-scale could not be used as an independent scale. Finally, the test–retest of the scale showed a significant strong correlation (r = 0.0095, p < 0.001). Conclusion: This analysis indicates that the scale is reliable and valid for assessing self-care behaviors in patients with AH. It is suggested that health professionals use it in their clinical practice to improve the management of AH
