    Spatial Coherence Resonance near Pattern-Forming Instabilities

    The analogue of temporal coherence resonance for spatial degrees of freedom is reported. Specifically, we show that spatiotemporal noise is able to optimally extract an intrinsic spatial scale in nonlinear media close to (but before) a pattern-forming instability. This effect is observed in a model of pattern-forming chemical reaction and in the Swift-Hohenberg model of fluid convection. In the latter case, the phenomenon is described analytically via an approximate approach.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    Preliminary Measurements of Be-10/Be-7 Ratio in Rainwater for Atmospheric Transport Analysis

    The meteoric cosmogenic beryllium has been used as an essential geophysical tracer in the analysis of atmospheric flows and erosion soils since 1960. The first measurements Be-7 and Be-10 concentrations in rainwater from Mexico, have been carried out by using gamma decay spectroscopy and AMS techniques, respectively for each isotope. With this it was possible to report a preliminar value for the Be-10/Be-7 isotopic ratio in such environmental samples. The present work described preliminary results related to rainwater collected at mountain and metropolitan areas. Results are compared with predictions and previous measurements for both radioisotopes, observing a very sensible behavior particularly for the case of Be-7 activities

    Integración de Puentes Térmicos en Programas de Simulación Dinámica de Edificios mediante el Método del Muro Equivalente

    Libro de actas completo disponible en :http://repositorio.bib.upct.es:8080/dspace/handle/10317/4709Los puentes térmicos son zonas de la envolvente de un edificio en las que se produce una transmisión preferencial de calor cuya causa es una heterogeneidad geométrica o material. Los programas más utilizados de simulación energética de edificios, como DOE-2 [1] o EnergyPlus [2], se basan en una hipótesis unidimensional para modelar la transmisión de calor en los cerramientos. No obstante, evaluar la transferencia de calor en los puentes térmicos implica resolver un problema de conducción bi- o tridimensional en régimen transitorio. Es posible utilizar herramientas especializadas como Voltra [3] o HEAT2 [4], pero no son generalmente aplicables a simulaciones estacionales, debido a su alto coste computacional. Se hace necesario un paso intermedio que conecte las simulaciones globales de edificios con los modelos detallados de puentes térmicos. Una de las aproximaciones más prácticas es la del “muro equivalente”, que consiste en identificar los parámetros de un muro multicapa ficticio, de forma que su respuesta dinámica sea muy próxima a la del elemento real, que tiene efectos 2D o 3D. Esta identificación de parámetros se puede llevar a cabo mediante diversos métodos. En este trabajo se aplica el método de identificación propuesto por Kosny [5] para obtener muros equivalentes que representen los tipos más usuales de puentes térmicos presentes en la construcción residencial española.Universidad de Málaga.     Hymenachne amplexicaluis [( Rudge ) Nees; 2n= 2x= 24; Azuche, West Indian marsh grass] is a native Central and South America C3 grass that grows well under intermittent flooding conditions. It produces good seed set and stolons to thrive on new areas assuring its survival, combined with an efficient N metabolism to promote vigorous new growing leaves and tillers (Antel et al., 1998). Azuche is a dual attribute species when introduced to new areas; it has valuable forage attributes but also is a potential weed (Hill, 2000). As Azuche is a native species, one must deal with in the best possible way within Tropical Latin America areas (Enríquez et al., 2004). No report has been found to date on living genetic resources collection and evaluation for this species

    Effect of different compatibilizers on injection-molded green composite pieces based on polylactide filled with almond shell flour

    [EN] Green composites made of polylactide (PLA) filled with almond shell flour (ASF) at a constant weight content of 25¿wt.-% were manufactured by injection molding. In order to increase the interfacial adhesion between the biopolymer and the lignocellulosic fillers, three different compatibilizers were tested, namely multi-functional epoxy-based styrene-acrylic oligomer (ESAO), aromatic carbodiimide (AC), and maleinized linseed oil (MLO). The effect of each compatibilizer on the thermal, mechanical, and thermomechanical properties and water uptake of the injection-molded PLA/ASF pieces was analyzed. The obtained results indicated that all the here-studied compatibilizers had a positive influence on both the thermal stability and the mechanical and thermomechanical performance of the green composite pieces but low impact on their water uptake profile. In addition, the morphological analysis performed at the fracture surfaces of the green composite pieces revealed that the filler¿matrix gap was substantially reduced. Among the tested compatibilizers, ESAO and MLO yielded the highest performance in terms of mechanical strength and ductility, respectively.     Companions of Bright Barred Shapley Ames Galaxies

    Companion galaxy environment for a subset of 78 bright and nearby barred galaxies from the Shapley Ames Catalog is presented. Among spiral barred galaxies there are Seyfert galaxies, galaxies with circumnuclear structures, galaxies not associated with any large scale galaxy cloud structure, galaxies with peculiar disk morphology (crooked arms) and galaxies with normal disk morphology; the list includes all Hubble types. The companion galaxy list includes number of companion galaxies within 20 diameters (D25), their Hubble type and projected separation distance. Additionally, companion environment was searched for four known active spiral galaxies, three of them are Seyfert galaxies, namely, NGC 1068, NGC 1097, NGC 5548 and one is a starburst galaxy, M82. Among the results obtained it is noted that the only spiral barred galaxy classified as Sy 1 in our list has no companions within a projected distance of 20 diameters; 6 out of 10 Sy 2 bar galaxies have no companions within 10 diamters, 6 out of 10 Sy 2 galaxies have one or more companions at projected separation distances between 10 and 20 diameters; 6 out of 12 galaxies with circumnuclear structures have 2 or more companions within 20 diametersComment: Accepted for publication in the Astronomical Journal, 40 pages incl. 3 figure

    Sodium and Potassium Consumption in a Semi-Urban Area in Peru: Evaluation of a Population-Based 24-Hour Urine Collection.

    Despite the negative effects of high sodium and low potassium consumption on cardiovascular health, their consumption has not been quantified in sites undergoing urbanization. We aimed to determine the sodium and potassium consumption in a semi-urban area in Peru with a cross-sectional study. 24-h urine samples were collected. The outcomes were mean consumption of sodium and potassium, as well as adherence to their consumption recommendation: <2 g/day and ≥3.51 g/day, respectively. Bivariate analyses were conducted to identify socio-economic and clinical variables associated with the consumption recommendations of 602 participants, complete urine samples were found in 409: mean age of participants was 45.7 (standard deviation (SD): 16.2) years and 56% were women. The mean sodium and potassium consumption was 4.4 (SD: 2.1) and 2.0 (SD: 1.2) g/day. The sodium and potassium recommendation was met by 7.1% and 13.7% of the study sample; none of the participants met both recommendations. People not adherent to the sodium recommendation had higher diastolic (73.1 mmHg vs. 68.2 mmHg, p = 0.015) and systolic (113.1 mmHg vs. 106.3 mmHg, p = 0.047) blood pressure than those who comply with the recommendation. Public health actions ought to be implemented in areas undergoing urbanization to improve sodium and potassium consumption at the population level
