Worksite tobacco prevention in the Canton of Zurich: stages of change, predictors, and outcomes
OBJECTIVES: This study provides information about the prevalence of tobacco prevention (TP) and the stages of change with respect to the introduction of TP among companies in the Canton of Zurich (n = 1,648). It explores the factors that predict restrictiveness of smoking policies, number of individual support measures, interest in services to promote TP, and the relationship between TP and health outcomes. METHODS: Data were gathered by means of a written questionnaire and analysed using ordinal regression models. RESULTS: Whereas many companies maintain smoke-free policies, only few provide cessation-courses. Health and welfare organisations have strictest, and building and hospitality companies have least strict policies. Company size predicts number of individual support measures but not policy restrictiveness. Both measures are predicted by personal concern of the representative. Interest in services is predicted by tobacco-related problems and medium stages of change. Finally, stricter policies are associated with lower proportion of smokers and less tobacco-related problems. CONCLUSIONS: Health professionals should support less advanced companies in their endeavour to implement TP. Hand in hand: Public endorsement of climate change mitigation and adaptation
This research investigated how an individual's endorsements of mitigation and adaptation relate to each other, and how well each of these can be accounted for by relevant social psychological factors. Based on survey data from two European convenience samples (N = 616 / 309) we found that public endorsements of mitigation and adaptation are strongly associated: Someone who is willing to reduce greenhouse gas emissions (mitigation) is also willing to prepare for climate change impacts (adaptation). Moreover, people endorsed the two response strategies for similar reasons: People who believe that climate change is real and dangerous, who have positive attitudes about protecting the environment and the climate, and who perceive climate change as a risk, are willing to respond to climate change. Furthermore, distinguishing between (spatially) proximal and distant risk perceptions suggested that the idea of portraying climate change as a proximal (i.e., local) threat might indeed be effective in promoting personal actions. However, to gain endorsement of broader societal initiatives such as policy support, it seems advisable to turn to the distant risks of climate change. The notion that "localising" climate change might not be the panacea for engaging people in this domain is discussed in regard to previous theory and research
Emotions while awaiting lung transplantation : a comprehensive qualitative analysis
Patients awaiting lung transplantation are at risk of negative emotional and physical experiences. How do they talk about emotions? Semi-structured interviews were performed (15 patients). Categorical analysis focusing on emotion-related descriptions was organized into positive–negative–neutral descriptions: for primary and secondary emotions, evaluation processes, coping strategies, personal characteristics, emotion descriptions associated with physical states, (and) contexts were listed. Patients develop different strategies to maintain positive identity and attitude, while preserving significant others from extra emotional load. Results are discussed within various theoretical and research backgrounds, in emphasizing their importance in the definition of emotional support starting from the patient’s perspective
Thermodynamics of Two-Dimensional Ideal Ferromagnets - Three-Loop Analysis
Within the effective Lagrangian framework, we explicitly evaluate the
partition function of two-dimensional ideal ferromagnets up to three loops at
low temperatures and in the presence of a weak external magnetic field. The
low-temperature series for the free energy density, energy density, heat
capacity, entropy density, as well as the magnetization are given and their
range of validity is critically examined in view of the Mermin-Wagner theorem.
The calculation involves the renormalization and numerical evaluation of a
particular three-loop graph which is discussed in detail. Interestingly, in the
low-temperature series for the two-dimensional ideal ferromagnet, the spin-wave
interaction manifests itself in the form of logarithmic terms. In the free
energy density the leading such term is of order -- remarkably, in
the case of the three-dimensional ideal ferromagnet no logarithmic terms arise
in the low-temperature series. While the present study demonstrates that it is
straightforward to consider effects up to three-loop order in the effective
field theory framework, this precision seems to be far beyond the reach of
microscopic methods such as modified spin-wave theory.Comment: 31 pages, 2 figure
Homogeneous versus Spiral Phases of Hole-doped Antiferromagnets: A Systematic Effective Field Theory Investigation
Using the low-energy effective field theory for magnons and holes -- the
condensed matter analog of baryon chiral perturbation theory for pions and
nucleons in QCD -- we study different phases of doped antiferromagnets. We
systematically investigate configurations of the staggered magnetization that
provide a constant background field for doped holes. The most general
configuration of this type is either constant itself or it represents a spiral
in the staggered magnetization. Depending on the values of the low-energy
parameters, a homogeneous phase, a spiral phase, or an inhomogeneous phase is
energetically favored. The reduction of the staggered magnetization upon doping

Surveillance for European bat lyssavirus in Swiss bats
Most countries in Western Europe are currently free of rabies in terrestrial mammals. Nevertheless, rabies remains a residual risk to public health due to the natural circulation of bat-specific viruses, such as European bat lyssaviruses (EBLVs). European bat lyssavirus types 1 and 2 (EBLV-1 and EBLV-2) are widely distributed throughout Europe, but little is known of their true prevalence and epidemiology. We report that only three out of 837 brains taken from bats submitted to the Swiss Rabies Centre between 1976 and 2009 were found by immunofluorescence (FAT) to be positive for EBLVs. All three positive cases were in Myotis daubentoni, from 1992, 1993 and 2002. In addition to this passive surveillance, we undertook a targeted survey in 2009, aimed at detecting lyssaviruses in live bats in Switzerland. A total of 237 bats of the species M. daubentoni, Myotis myotis, Eptesicus serotinus and Nyctalus noctula were captured at different sites in western Switzerland. Oropharyngeal swabs and blood from each individual were analysed by RT-PCR and rapid fluorescent focus inhibition test (RFFIT), respectively. RNA corresponding to EBLV-2 was detected from oropharyngeal swabs of a single M. daubentoni bat, but no infectious virus was found. Molecular phylogenetic analysis revealed that the corresponding sequence was closely related to the other EBLV-2 sequences identified in previous rabies isolates from Swiss bats (particularly to that found at Geneva in 2002). Three M. daubentoni bats were found to be seropositive by RFFIT. A t-SNARE of the endocytic pathway must be activated for fusion
The t-SNARE in a late Golgi compartment (Tlg2p) syntaxin is required for endocytosis and localization of cycling proteins to the late Golgi compartment in yeast. We show here that Tlg2p assembles with two light chains, Tlg1p and Vti1p, to form a functional t-SNARE that mediates fusion, specifically with the v-SNAREs Snc1p and Snc2p. In vitro, this t-SNARE is inert, locked in a nonfunctional state, unless it is activated for fusion. Activation can be mediated by a peptide derived from the v-SNARE, which likely bypasses additional regulatory proteins in the cell. Locking t-SNAREs creates the potential for spatial and temporal regulation of fusion by signaling processes that unleash their fusion capacity
Color plasma oscillation in strangelets
The dispersion relation and damping rate of longitudinal color plasmons in
finite strange quark matter (strangelets) are evaluated in the limits of weak
coupling, low temperature, and long wavelength. The property of the QCD vacuum
surrounding a strangelet makes the frequency of the plasmons nearly the same as
the color plasma frequency of bulk matter. The plasmons are damped by their
coupling with individual excitations of particle-hole pairs of quarks, of which
the energy levels are discretized by the boundary. For strangelets of
macroscopic size, the lifetime of the plasmons is found to be proportional to
the size, as in the case of the usual plasma oscillations in metal
