Aerodynamic Theory of the Oscillating Wing of Finite Span
The theory of the oscillating airfoil of infinite span with two-dimensional flow has been developed to a high degree of completeness (ref. 4, 7)
In the present theory the oscillating airfoil of finite span is considered with the purpose of introducing the effect, of the trailing vortices and the three dimensional characters of the velocity field, on the aerodynamics forces. General formulae are established for the lift and moment on an elliptic airfoil oscillating in both translation and rotation and the numerical results are presented in tabular and graphical form

A study of neutron room scattering at RPCF
High energy physics facilities must monitor the radiation doses received by their personnel. This monitoring can only be effective if the radiation detection devices can be calibrated with a good degree of accuracy. Radiation fields are usually composed of several types of radiation, including gamma rays, beta radiation, neutrons, etc. The neutron detection instruments respond not only to the neutrons coming directly from the source but also those scattered from the floor, walls, and ceiling. The amount of neutron scattering varies from site to site depending on the construction materials and layout of the building. The purpose of this study was to determine the scattered neutron fraction in the central volume of the calibration mezzanine of the Radiation Physics Calibration Facility (RPCF) at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab). At Fermilab, radiation workers dosimeters use CR39 for neutron detection, which are sent to an outside vendor for reading. As part of the quality assurance program, Fermilab routinely sends the vendor ``spiked`` badges, i.e. badges exposed to a known amount of neutron dosage at RPCF. This study determines a correction factor due to scattered neutron to the spiked badges. The study was conducted in a room with floor dimensions of 12 m by 9.5 m. The walls and ceiling are thin steel and insulation supported by steel 1-beams. We determined the total amount of radiation at three heights above the floor, and at three distances from an AmBe neutron source at each height in the RPCF using the Bonner Sphere technique
Detecting the (Quasi-)Two-Body Decays of Leptons in Short-Baseline Neutrino Oscillation Experiments
Novel detector schemes are proposed for the short-baseline neutrino
experiments of next generation, aimed at exploring the large-
domain of \omutau oscillations in the appearance mode. These schemes emphasize
good spectrometry for charged particles and for electromagnetic showers and
efficient reconstruction of \ypi_gg decays. The basic elements are a sequence
of relatively thin emulsion targets, immersed in magnetic field and
interspersed with electronic trackers, and a fine-grained electromagnetic
calorimeter built of lead glass. These elements act as an integral whole in
reconstructing the electromagnetic showers. This conceptual scheme shows good
performance in identifying the (quasi-)two-body decays by their
characteristic kinematics and in selecting the electronic decays of the .Comment: 34 pages, 8 figure
Search for the disappearance of muon antineutrinos in the NuMI neutrino beam
We report constraints on muon antineutrino oscillation parameters that were obtained by using the two MINOS detectors to measure the 7% antineutrino component of the NuMI neutrino beam. In the Far Detector, we select 130 events in the charged-current muon antineutrino sample, compared to a prediction of 136.4 +/- 11.7(stat) ^{+10.2}_{-8.9}(syst) events under the assumption |dm2bar|=2.32x10^-3 eV^2, snthetabar=1.0. A fit to the two-flavor oscillation approximation constrains |dm2bar|<3.37x10^-3 eV^2 at the 90% confidence level with snthetabar=1.0
QCD Corrections to the Top Decay Mode t \ra \tilde{t} \chi^0
In supersymmetric theories, the top quark can decay into its scalar partner
plus a neutralino, with an appreciable rate. We calculate the QCD
corrections to this decay mode in the minimal supersymmetric extension of the
Standard Model. These corrections can be either positive or negative and
increase logarithmically with the gluino mass. For gluino masses below 1 TeV,
they are at most of the order of ten percent and therefore, well under control.Comment: 15 pages including 4 figs (using psfig.sty). A few typos have been
corrected and some references added. The results for Figs. 3 and 4 are now
presented in the dimensional reduction scheme. Version to appear in Phys.

Uromodulin is expressed in renal primary cilia and UMOD mutations result in decreased ciliary uromodulin expression
Uromodulin (UMOD) mutations are responsible for three autosomal dominant tubulo-interstitial nephropathies including medullary cystic kidney disease type 2 (MCKD2), familial juvenile hyperuricemic nephropathy and glomerulocystic kidney disease. Symptoms include renal salt wasting, hyperuricemia, gout, hypertension and end-stage renal disease. MCKD is part of the ‘nephronophthisis-MCKD complex', a group of cystic kidney diseases. Both disorders have an indistinguishable histology and renal cysts are observed in either. For most genes mutated in cystic kidney disease, their proteins are expressed in the primary cilia/basal body complex. We identified seven novel UMOD mutations and were interested if UMOD protein was expressed in the primary renal cilia of human renal biopsies and if mutant UMOD would show a different expression pattern compared with that seen in control individuals. We demonstrate that UMOD is expressed in the primary cilia of renal tubules, using immunofluorescent studies in human kidney biopsy samples. The number of UMOD-positive primary cilia in UMOD patients is significantly decreased when compared with control samples. Additional immunofluorescence studies confirm ciliary expression of UMOD in cell culture. Ciliary expression of UMOD is also confirmed by electron microscopy. UMOD localization at the mitotic spindle poles and colocalization with other ciliary proteins such as nephrocystin-1 and kinesin family member 3A is demonstrated. Our data add UMOD to the group of proteins expressed in primary cilia, where mutations of the gene lead to cystic kidney diseas
An improved measurement of muon antineutrino disappearance in MINOS
We report an improved measurement of muon anti-neutrino disappearance over a
distance of 735km using the MINOS detectors and the Fermilab Main Injector
neutrino beam in a muon anti-neutrino enhanced configuration. From a total
exposure of 2.95e20 protons on target, of which 42% have not been previously
analyzed, we make the most precise measurement of the anti-neutrino
"atmospheric" delta-m squared = 2.62 +0.31/-0.28 (stat.) +/- 0.09 (syst.) and
constrain the anti-neutrino atmospheric mixing angle >0.75 (90%CL). These
values are in agreement with those measured for muon neutrinos, removing the
tension reported previously.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures. In submission to Phys.Rev.Let
