    Get PDF
Background: Dietary patterns and its associated factors and can play an essential role in development of preeclampsia and implication in pregnancy-induced hypertension (PIH). Objective: This study was performed to determine nutritional factors associated with PIH among pregnant women in Khartoum, Sudan. Methods: This study was a case-control involving 100 women with PIH and 200 normotensive pregnant women. Results: The mean current weight in the control and PIH groups was 70.25 ± 12.35 and 72.42 ± 12.33 kg; whereas the mean energy intake in the control and PIH groups was 1991.58 ±140.72 and 2154.37 ± 130.85 kcal, respectively. The study results indicated a significantly lower risk of PIH among women ingesting fruits and legumes (odds ratio, 8.44 and 4.07, respectively; 95% confidence interval; P < 0.05). Conclusion: PIH was positively associated with higher energy, fat, and protein intake. A lower risk of PIH was calculated for women whose dietary habits included fruits and legumes. Measures with which to ensure proper nutrition education are needed to obtain good health and pregnancy outcomes. PIH is a multifactorial disease with an unclear etiology, and the findings of this study will serve as a baseline for future studies in this field. Background Unhealthy dietary habits and lifestyle among adolescents is considered as a risk factor for nutrition-related diseases in adulthood. The objective of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of a healthy lifestyle intervention—including physical activity (PA) and eating habits (EH)—among female students in Jizan City, southwest Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA). Methods A representative sample of 565 school students aged 12–15 years was randomly selected from four schools in Jizan, KSA. The PA and EH were assessed using a validated self-administered questionnaire. A pre-post quasi-experimental study was implemented in three phases. Results Following the intervention, the school children in the intervention groups showed a significant improvement in their EH and PA. These improvements were documented in increased physical walking measured by the number of students walking daily, the number of days walked, and the time spent on vigorous activities (54.11 ± 54.89 to 63.24 ± 76.16). Fruits and vegetables had a similar consumption frequency in both the intervention and control groups. The snacks were frequently consumed among intervention group with a significant increase in the mean number from 1.64 ± 0.93 to 1.96 ± 1.13 (p = 0.000) and fast food were less frequently consumed among intervention group than the control group (p = 0.000). The prevalence of obesity in the intervention group was reduced from 16.3% to 12.9%, while it was significantly increased from 17.6% to 19.0% in the control group (p = 0.0148). Weight decreased by 0.37 kg in the intervention group, while it increased by 0.07 kg in the control group, but with no statistically significant increase. Conclusion: In conclusion, healthy lifestyle interventions can improve short- and long-term outcomes in school children. When examining the health benefits of healthy lifestyle, the importance of dietary and PA behaviors should be considered. There are many sources of hazardous noise that contributed to the hearing impairment, that resultant from over exposure noise level from workplace. This study examined the contribution of machine that used in the spice manufacturing towards to the employee. Initially, the background noise of each workstation needed to be measured using a sound level meter. Then, monitoring levels including machine noise levels and daily self-reported duration noise exposure to workers was elucidated. A total of 30 workers were identified as having workplace noise exposures. The average noise levels were between 81 and 97 dBA in high and low noise exposure areas, respectively. The average self-reported workplace noise measure time was 8 hours/day. The estimated mean daily noise exposures were calculated from machine noise were found to be higher than the Factories And Machinery (Noise Exposure) Regulations, specifically 90 dBA eight-hour time weighted average (TWA). In addition, 750% of production workers had estimated greater than TWA value exposures. It is therefore recommended that industries either limit workplace use among the production workers or require device and technological advanced to prevent occupational noise-induced hearing loss

    Get PDF
Technology has significantly transformed knowledge, education, and access to information by introducing online learning platforms, interactive games, and virtual reality simulations in traditional classrooms, creating a dynamic, engaging, and inclusive learning environment. The ChatGBT project (a pre-developed transformer for training) is a remarkable achievement in artificial intelligence technology. It allows students tailored and efficient learning experiences by providing individual feedback and explanations. ChatGPT e-learning platform has been extensively studied for its adoption and acceptance, but there is a significant gap in research on its acceptability and use, highlighting the need for further exploration. The goal of this work is to bridge this disparity by introducing a comprehensive model that includes three basic elements: performance expectation, expected effort, and social impact. A total of 241 graduate students were surveyed and their data were analyzed using structural equation modeling techniques. The results indicate that “expectation of performance and expected effort” have the greatest impact and importance in determining students’ intentions to use learning platforms via ChatGPT, while social influence does not play an important role. This study enhances the current body of knowledge related to artificial intelligence and environmental sustainability, and provides important insights for professionals, policymakers, and producers of artificial intelligence products. These observations may provide guidance for creating and implementing artificial intelligence technologies to match consumers’ needs and preferences more effectively, while also taking into account broader environmental conditions

BackgroundCollege students report disturbed sleep patterns that can negatively impact their wellbeing and academic performance.ObjectivesThis study examined the effect of a 4-week sleep hygiene program that included sleep education and actigraph sleep trackers (FITBITs) on improving sleep quality and reducing psychological worry without control group.Design, settings, and participantsA pilot quasi-experimental design, participants were randomly selected medical and health sciences from a university students in the United-Arab-Emirates.MethodsStudents were asked to wear FITBITs and log their daily sleep data and completed the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and Penn State Worry Questionnaire (PSWQ). Extensive sleep hygiene education was delivered via lectures, a WhatsApp group, and the Blackboard platform. In total, 50 students completed pre-and post-assessments and returned FITBIT data.ResultsThere was a significant difference in the prevalence of good sleep postintervention compared with pre-intervention (46% vs. 28%; p = 0.0126). The mean PSQI score was significantly lower post-intervention compared with pre-intervention (6.17 ± 3.16 vs. 7.12.87; p = 0.04, Cohen’s d 0.33). After the intervention, subjective sleep quality, sleep latency, and daytime dysfunction were significantly improved compared with pre-intervention (p < 0.05). In addition, FITBIT data showed total sleep time and the number of restless episodes per night were significantly improved postintervention compared with pre-intervention (p = 0.013). The mean PSWQ score significantly decreased from pre-intervention to p = 0.049, Cohen’ d = 0.25. The correlation between PSQI and PSWQ scores was significant post-intervention (β = 0.40, p = 0.02).ConclusionOur results may inform university educational policy and curricular reform to incorporate sleep hygiene awareness programs to empower students and improve their sleep habits

Background: There is a substantial gap in provision of adequate surgical care in many low-and middle-income countries. This study aimed to identify the economic burden of unmet surgical need for the common condition of appendicitis. Methods: Data on the incidence of appendicitis from 170 countries and two different approaches were used to estimate numbers of patients who do not receive surgery: as a fixed proportion of the total unmet surgical need per country (approach 1); and based on country income status (approach 2). Indirect costs with current levels of access and local quality, and those if quality were at the standards of high-income countries, were estimated. A human capital approach was applied, focusing on the economic burden resulting from premature death and absenteeism. Results: Excess mortality was 4185 per 100 000 cases of appendicitis using approach 1 and 3448 per 100 000 using approach 2. The economic burden of continuing current levels of access and local quality was US 92492millionusingapproach1and92 492 million using approach 1 and 73 141 million using approach 2. The economic burden of not providing surgical care to the standards of high-income countries was 95004millionusingapproach1and95 004 million using approach 1 and 75 666 million using approach 2. The largest share of these costs resulted from premature death (97.7 per cent) and lack of access (97.0 per cent) in contrast to lack of quality. Conclusion: For a comparatively non-complex emergency condition such as appendicitis, increasing access to care should be prioritized. Although improving quality of care should not be neglected, increasing provision of care at current standards could reduce societal costs substantially

    Get PDF
Background: This study provides a global overview of the management of patients with acute cholecystitis during the initial phase of the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: CHOLECOVID is an international, multicentre, observational comparative study of patients admitted to hospital with acute cholecystitis during the COVID-19 pandemic. Data on management were collected for a 2-month study interval coincident with the WHO declaration of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic and compared with an equivalent pre-pandemic time interval. Mediation analysis examined the influence of SARS-COV-2 infection on 30-day mortality. Results: This study collected data on 9783 patients with acute cholecystitis admitted to 247 hospitals across the world. The pandemic was associated with reduced availability of surgical workforce and operating facilities globally, a significant shift to worse severity of disease, and increased use of conservative management. There was a reduction (both absolute and proportionate) in the number of patients undergoing cholecystectomy from 3095 patients (56.2 per cent) pre-pandemic to 1998 patients (46.2 per cent) during the pandemic but there was no difference in 30-day all-cause mortality after cholecystectomy comparing the pre-pandemic interval with the pandemic (13 patients (0.4 per cent) pre-pandemic to 13 patients (0.6 per cent) pandemic; P = 0.355). In mediation analysis, an admission with acute cholecystitis during the pandemic was associated with a non-significant increased risk of death (OR 1.29, 95 per cent c.i. 0.93 to 1.79, P = 0.121). Conclusion: CHOLECOVID provides a unique overview of the treatment of patients with cholecystitis across the globe during the first months of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. The study highlights the need for system resilience in retention of elective surgical activity. Cholecystectomy was associated with a low risk of mortality and deferral of treatment results in an increase in avoidable morbidity that represents the non-COVID cost of this pandemic
