New result on the measurement of the direct photon emission in K+ --> pi^+ pi^0 gamma decay

We present a new result on the K^+ --> pi^+ pi^0 gamma decay measurement using stopped kaons. The best fit to the decay spectrum comprised of 10k events gives a branching ratio for the direct photon emission of [3.8+-0.8(stat)+-0.7(syst)] times 10^{-6} in the pi^+ kinetic energy region of 55 to 90 MeV. This result has been obtained with the assumption that there is no component due to interference with the inner bremsstrahlung.Comment: 14 pages, 7 figures, 3 tables (Fig.1 which had problems with uploading first time is replaced. Survey on Student Nurse Awareness of Male Midwives

本研究は,助産士導入に関して看護学を専攻する学生の意識を明らかにすること,また各学年および各専攻科の学生がどのような傾向を持っているのかを明らかにすることである.アンケート回収率は,87%(n=282)で,対象者は,看護学科の1年生から3年生,専攻科地域看護学専攻(以下,地域専攻)の学生,専攻科助産学専攻(以下,助産専攻)の学生であった.その結果,以下のことが明らかになった.1.男性助産士について75.5%の学生が知っていた.2.助産士導入の賛否は,「賛成群」41.8%,「反対群」47.9%,「わからない」10.3%であった.3.反対の理由は,「精神的な苦痛を受ける」ことや「身体的プライバシーが守られない」ということ,また「同性であるということからの安心感のあるケアを受けたい」ということであった.4.賛成の理由としては,「職業選択の権利」や「性差別」,「男女平等に関すること」,また「助産士の登場による新しい活動」や「父親,育児へのサポートに期待する」ものであった.5.学生は自分をケアの受け手と想定した場合に「男性の助産士」を希望するものはひとりもいなかった.This study was conducted to clarify the awareness of students specializing in nursing about male midwives and to determine the tendencies stratified by academic year and subject specialty. The return rate of questionnaire replies was 87% (n=282). The subjects of the survey consisted of 1st to 3rd year nursing students, postgraduate nursing students specializing in public health (hereafter abbreviated to public health specialists) and postgraduate students specializing in midwifery (hereafter abbreviated to midwives). The results obtained were as follows. 1) Some 75.5% of the students were aware of the existence of male midwives. 2) The proportion of responses approving of the introduction of males into the midwifery field was 41.8%, while that of disapproving responses was 47.9% and that of undecided responses was10.3%. 3) The reasons cited for disapproval included "mental anguish," "lack of physical privacy," and also the "desire to receive the anxiety-free care provided by a female midwife." 4) The reasons cited for approval included "the right to choose a career," "sex discrimination," "sexual equality," "newactivity arising from the emergence of male midwives," and "anticipation of paternal support of childcare." 5) There was not a single student who gave the response of "would select a male midwife" when answering a hypothetical question relating to their personal choice of care provider.departmental bulletin pape

Realistic Neutrino Masses from Multi-brane Extensions of the Randall-Sundrum Model?

Scenarios based on the existence of large or warped (Randall-Sundrum model) extra dimensions have been proposed for addressing the long standing puzzle of gauge hierarchy problem. Within the contexts of both those scenarios, a novel and original type of mechanism generating small (Dirac) neutrino masses, which relies on the presence of additional right-handed neutrinos that propagate in the bulk, has arisen. The main objective of the present study is to determine whether this geometrical mechanism can produce reasonable neutrino masses also in the interesting multi-brane extensions of the Randall-Sundrum model. We demonstrate that, in some multi-brane extensions, neutrino masses in agreement with all relevant experimental bounds can indeed be generated but at the price of a constraint (stronger than the existing ones) on the bulk geometry, and that the other multi-brane models even conflict with those experimental bounds.Comment: 29 pages, 3 figures, Latex file. Reflexives and Mirror Image

This paper argues that what caused the morphological irregularities of the English reflexive pronoun in the 14th and 15th centuries was not limited to phonological and analogical reasons given in The Oxford English Dictionary. We assume that sociological and psychological reasons contributed to the adoption of the irregular forms. By the introduction of the concepts of 'self-possession' and 'mirror image', we attempt to explain the relationship between the irregular paradigm and the peculiar syntactical behavior of the English reflexive pronoun.departmental bulletin pape

Limitation of Using Ultrasonography After Positive Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy in a Patient with Melanoma in the Detection of Lymph Node Metastasis

Recent studies have shown that complete lymph node dissection (CLND) performed immediately did not improve the overall survival in patients with sentinel lymph node (LN)-positive melanoma. According to these results, nodal observation with ultrasonography becomes standard. However, it still has some limitations for detection of metastatic LNs. A 74-year-old woman was diagnosed with acral lentiginous melanoma of her left sole. The sentinel LN was positive for metastasis, but she refused CLND. Sixteen months after operation, ultrasonography showed an abnormal LN in the inguinal region. There was no other abnormal LNs around the LN. We resected the abnormal LN. The resected LN was black in color, and the adjacent LN that showed normal appearance in ultrasonography was also black. A recent study showed only 6.6% sensitivity in preoperative ultrasonographic detection of metastatic melanoma in a LN. We should keep in mind the limitation of ultrasonography for detection of a metastatic LN.journal articl
