Use of a weighted matching algorithm to sequence clusters in spatial join processing

    Get PDF
One of the most expensive operations in a spatial database is spatial join processing. This study focuses on how to improve the performance of such processing. The main objective is to reduce the Input/Output (I/O) cost of the spatial join process by using a technique called cluster-scheduling. Generally, the spatial join is processed in two steps, namely filtering and refinement. The cluster-scheduling technique is performed after the filtering step and before the refinement step and is part of the housekeeping phase. The key point of this technique is to realise order wherein two consecutive clusters in the sequence have maximal overlapping objects. However, finding the maximal overlapping order has been shown to be Nondeterministic Polynomial-time (NP)-complete. This study proposes an algorithm to provide approximate maximal overlapping (AMO) order in a Cluster Overlapping (CO) graph. The study proposes the use of an efficient maximum weighted matching algorithm to solve the problem of finding AMO order. As a result, the I/O cost in spatial join processing can be minimised

Entropy and biological systems: experimentally-investigated entropy-driven stacking of plant photosynthetic membranes

    Get PDF
According to the Second Law of thermodynamics, an overall increase of entropy contributes to the driving force for any physicochemical process, but entropy has seldom been investigated in biological systems. Here, for the first time, we apply Isothermal Titration Calorimetry (ITC) to investigate the Mg21-induced spontaneous stacking of photosynthetic membranes isolated from spinach leaves. After subtracting a large endothermic interaction of MgCl2 with membranes, unrelated to stacking, we demonstrate that the enthalpy change (heat change at constant pressure) is zero or marginally positive or negative. This first direct experimental evidence strongly suggests that an entropy increase significantly drives membrane stacking in this ordered biological structure. Possible mechanisms for the entropy increase include: (i) the attraction between discrete oppositely-charged areas, releasing counterions; (ii) the release of loosely-bound water molecules from the inter-membrane gap; (iii) the increased orientational freedom of previously-aligned water dipoles; and (iv) the lateral rearrangement of membrane components. This work was supported consecutively by Australian Research Council grants (DP0664719 and DP 1093927)

‘DALIMA’ AS AN INSPIRATION, CONCEPT AND AESTSHETIC EXPRESSION OF CIREBON CULTURE

    Get PDF
‘Dalima’ is part of Cirebon Royal Cultural work which has symbolistic, idioplastic and visioplastic comprehension. In the ideoplastic domain, it metaphorically reflects Surat Al-Ikhlas. Etymologically, it is a combination of the letters ‘dal’ and the number ‘lima’. In the visioplastic domain, it is adopted on the artifacts such as Delima motive, Liman temple, Liman motive and Paksi Naga Liman Carriage. Attempting to analyze its symbol and meaning means attempting to identify its implied values and the relation between the implied values to its people’s cultural system and expression, especially the pattern of the creative tradition of art. Several aspects which influence it need to be holistically and deeply explored. In relation to that, the phenomenological (visual) qualitative method with interdisciplinary approach was used in the study. The visual phenomenon related to the historical aspect was synchronically and diachronically analyzed in order to reveal the relevant understanding of the religious-cultural behavior of the Cirebon community. Transformational approach especially the one which is related to the form of the morphology of the artifacts was employed to analyze it diachronically. Keyword: The phenomenon of visual, symbolic expression, and religious cultur

Aerosol Particle Bounding in Cascade Impactors

    Get PDF
Particle deposition characteristics were observed from the aerosol sampling results of a UNICO cascade impactor. A simple model of particle motion combined with Hiemenz flow of stagnation flow on a flat plate were developed and discussed. Both results and analysis were compared to recent models on particle bouncing errors or secondary deposition which included vortices formation around the edge of the slot, back spin (Magnus effect), and hydrodynamic conditions of the particles. The analysis was limited to a laminar inviscid and incompressible case. The main obstacle in the observation was the fact that impactor nozzles were unsymmetrical to a considerable degree, thereby deviating particle trajectory significantly from the predicted situation
