Analytical Study on Seepage Behavior and Safety Evaluation in Embankment Dam during Rapid Draw-down

Finite element saturated and unsaturated seepage flow analysis was done in the present paper to evaluate distriibution of the residual pore water pressure generated in an embankment dam during a rapid draw-down and its infruence on safety evaluation in theupstream slope. Applicability and accuracy of F.E. solutions was frrst examined by comparing the results of computation with dose from centrifuge model tests. Parametric studies were then conducted on several model fills with different inclinations of slope by varying the decreasing rate of the reservoir level，to understand the mechanism of seepage flow during draw-down and variation with time of the residual pore water pressure accumulated in the embankment. Slope stability analysis carried out for several circular sliding surfaces revealed that the procedure of pore water pressure estimation currently adopted in the design gives a safe side value as compared with the computed result
