An Experimental Study on Gas-Particle Supersonic and Subsonic Flows Past Blunt Bodies

    Get PDF
An experimental study was performed on gas-particle supersonic unsteady flows past blunt bodies (an axisymmetric flat-faced cylinder and a two-dimensional circular cylinder) installed in a horizontal dusty-gas shock tube. For dusty gas air containing fly ash (mean diameter 3μm) was used. The experiment was carried out for frozen shock Mach number from 1.2 to 2.7 and initial loading ratio of the particles in the gas below η_o = 0.01. Schlieren photographs of the shock waves past blunt bodies taken with an Imacon 790 camera are shown, and the effect of suspended particles on the stagnation pressure histories of the blunt bodies are also shown

Direct Laser Sintering of Tool Steel Powder

[Abstract]In this study, the fabrication conditions of tool steel by direct selective laser sintering were investigated using two kinds of -45 μm and -105/+45 μm SKD11 powders. The effect of powder size on the state of laser-scanned body was examined to fabricate a sound laser-scanned body of tool steel. Moreover, the measurement of a simple shaped product fabricated under the optimum condition was performed to determine whether it conforms to the design specification. The optimum laser power, scan speed, scan pitch, and layer thickness were obtained by experiments. As a result, a simple shaped product could be fabricated successfully under the optimum condition by using -105/+45 μm powder

We report a case of synchronous presentation of thyroid cancer and testicular seminoma with lymph node metastasis. A 37-year-old man presented with right scrotal swelling and multiple lymph node swelling. We performed right radical orchiectomy, and histological examination revealed a seminoma of the testis. After systemic work-up for staging, we diagnosed the patient with multiple lymph node metastasis of the seminoma, and administered three cycles of bleomycin, etoposide, and cisplatin (BEP) therapy. Although the chemotherapy was very effective for the retroperitoneal and left cervical lymph node metastases, the right cervical tumor did not change. Retroperitoneal lymphadenectomy combined with right cervical lymph node dissection and hemi-thyroidectomy were performed on September 8, 1998. Pathological examination of the thyroid revealed papillary thyroid cancer and its right cervical lymph node metastasis. There was no evidence of viable cancer cells from either of the primary cancers in the retroperitoneal lymph node. Unresponsiveness to chemotherapy for metastatic lesions from testicular cancer might be a useful clue to detect primary tumors of other origins

Our spatial reconstruction of vegetation (from the fossil pollen and wood profiles of two peat layers) spanning the Last Termination on Mt. Chokai, northeastern Japan, advanced our understanding of vegetation history on the Japan Sea coast. Both types of remains indicated: 1) in ca. 14–11 ka cal BP, deciduous broad-leaved scrubs mainly consisting of Betula ermanii, Acer tschonoskii, and Alnus firma existed at 700 m a.s.l.; 2) after ca. 14 ka cal BP, boreal conifers disappeared from this area, probably due to warming of the Last Termination. Furthermore, we identified a fossil wood of Larix, probably L. gmelinii, from the peat layer of ca. 14–11 ka cal BP. This discovery implies that L. gmelinii expanded its distribution into peat bogs on the Japan Sea coast in the final stage of its extinction process, little affectd by snow accumulation in winter.Article植生史研究. 23(1) : 21-26 (2014)journal articl
