The purpose of this paper is to present the main stream of the reception of Lucretius’ materialistic philosophy in Poland based on the works of the positivist period, as well as the stances of scholars who take up this subject. It outlines how positivism remains faithful to the Romantic spirit concerning the primacy of spirit and God over materialism and scientism. Additionally, the paper presents the arguments used against the materialistic philosophy in the works of Bolesław Prus and Ignacy Dąbrowski. This has led to the conclusion that there was no place for an alternative to Christian doctrine.Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie głównego nurtu recepcji filozofii materialistycznej Lukrecjusza w Polsce na przykładzie dzieł z epoki pozytywizmu, a także stanowisk badaczy, którzy ten temat podejmują. Ukazano, w jaki sposób pozytywizm pozostaje wierny romantycznemu duchowi w kwestii prymatu ducha i Boga nad materializmem i scjentyzmem.

A Formal Model of an Argumentative Dialogue in the Management of Emotions

    Get PDF
In this research, we focus on designing an interactive tool which will be used as an aid in learning how to manage emotions during argumentative dialogues. To this end, a collection of examples illustrating the typical human’s reactions was collated and used to explain mechanisms that appear in dialogues. We present a theoretical background of the project, i.e., a formal system to represent the change of intensity of emotions in argumentative dialogues. We rely here on persuasive dialogue games. A formal language for expressing properties of protocols for dialogues with emotional reasoning is proposed. We suggest that awareness of emotions improves communication between parents and children, and that it is an important element of both raising communication skills in adults and development of communication skills in children

Gallbladder cancer- causes, symptoms and chirurgical treatment: systematic review

Gallbladder cancer (GBC) is the most common cancer of bile ducts. This is one of the worst prognostic tumors of the digestive tract. The disease is asymptomatic for a long time, which is why it is detected in a high stage, which shortens the chances of healing. Surgery has a fundamental role in the treatment of gallbladder cancer. The patient survival prognosis depends mainly on the local severity of the disease, distant metastases and the radicality of surgical resection (R0)

Analysis of patients' reports to the oncological surgery clinic

In the Polish healthcare system, the primary care physician is responsible for directing patients to outpatient specialist care if such need occurs. This is usually performed basing on the physical and subjective examination alone, because often it is not possible to perform more advanced diagnostic imaging that can confirm or rule out a disease requiring specialist intervention. Cancer diseases are a group of diseases where the time from diagnosis to treatment is particularly important and plays a key role in prognosis. Oncological surgery is a field of medicine, that deals with the surgical treatment of a close group of cancers

Perioperative management. Nutrition in the perioperative period

    Get PDF
The current patterns of perioperative management are subject to dynamic changes, questioning and modifying the previously used ones. In modern surgical practice, it is recommended to apply a comprehensive peri-operative care protocol to improve the results of ERAS (Enhanced Recover After Surgery) treatment. ERAS is a multidirectional path of perioperative care over a patient, used all over the world, developed by the international scientific society ERAS Society, initiated by the Danish surgeon Henrik Kehlet. This protocol aims to achieve the fastest possible recovery of the patient by minimizing metabolic stress caused by surgery, improving the healing process, reducing tissue swelling, reducing the number of postoperative complications, shortening the duration of hospitalization and reducing the cost of health care

Relationship between intestinal microbiota and thyroid homeostasis

    Get PDF
The human digestive tract is inhabited by hundreds of bacterial species, both aerobic and anaerobic, bacteriophages, viruses and fungi that collectively are referred to as intestinal microbiota. Microbiota has a significant impact on the production and maintenance of immunological, hormonal and metabolic homeostasis. Dysbiosis is present in inflammations, e.g. intestinal inflammation, autoimmune diseases, e.g. multiple sclerosis, type 1 diabetes, rheumatic diseases, metabolic disorders such as obesity or type 2 diabetes, and mental illness. Currently, numerous studies are underway on the effect of microbiota on thyroid autoimmune diseases. . It seems, that microbiota has a small, if any, effect on the metabolism of iodine and selenium - elements particularly responsible for thyroid homeostasis. However, the relationship between thyroid function and the gastrointestinal tract has been proven

Introduction: PCOS is a hyperandrogenic and low-pathogenic disease and patients suffering from PCOS have significantly lower intestinal microbiota variation in comparison with healthy individuals. Aim of the study:The aim of the work is to overview the literary production regarding reliance between intestinal microbiota and polycystic ovary syndrome. Conclusions: Results of the research show change in microbiome data amongst women suffering from polycystic ovary syndrome

Is a normal chest radiograph sufficient to exclude pulmonary abnormalities potentially associated with chronic cough?

    Get PDF
Introduction: There are few original studies on the true role of normal chest radiograph (CXR) in exclusion of pulmonary conditions that may be associated with chronic cough. Thus, the aim of the study was to assess whether a plain CXR is a sufficient tool to exclude relevant pulmonary causes of chronic cough. Material and methods: A retrospective analysis of chest computed tomography (CT) scans in non-smoking patients with chronic cough and normal CXR was performed. The percentage of individuals in whom chest CT revealed relevant abnormalities was compared with the percentage of patients with irrelevant findings or normal chest CT scans. The negative predictive value (NPV) of the CXR in diagnosing the causes of chronic cough was calculated as a proportion of true negative CXRs (normal CXR AND irrelevant CT findings OR normal CT scan) to all negative CXRs (all patients, who had both a CXR and CT scan). Results: The study group consisted of 59 adult patients with chronic cough, normal CXR and CT scan performed to diagnose the cause of chronic cough. In 21 patients (21/59, 36%), chest CT revealed abnormalities that were classified as relevant to chronic cough. The most frequent were: bronchiectasis (7/59, 11.9%), bronchial wall thickening (6/59, 10.2%) and mediastinal lymphadenopathy (5/59, 8.5%). The NPV of a CXR in diagnosing the causes of chronic cough was 64%. Conclusions: In conclusion, the NPV of CXR in diagnosing pulmonary causes of chronic cough is relatively low. Thus, plain CXR seems to be insufficient to exclude pulmonary diseases potentially associated with chronic cough

A newborn of mother with thyroid disease

Thyroid diseases are frequent endocrinopathies during childbearing, affecting about 5-20% of pregnant women. They can appear in women both before and during pregnancy. The most common form of thyroid disease is hypothyroidism, mainly Hashimoto's disease. Hyperthyroidism is less frequent, but the most common form is Graves' disease. Disorders of thyroid function in the newborn cause permanent consequences mainly in the development of the nervous system. Therefore, it is very important to properly diagnose and quickly apply treatment when a disorder is detected. In Poland there is a screening program for newborns detecting congenital hypothyroidism. In this program the TSH level is measured in second or third day of life. Diagnosis of hyperthyroidism in children of mothers with Graves' disease consists of examining the levels of TRAb antibodies in the mother especially in the third trimester, and in the umbilical cord blood or blood of the newborn. It should also be observed if symptoms of fetal hyperthyroidism are present. Treatment of both hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism should be started without undue delay. Both of these neonatal endocrinopathies are mostly transient and retreat with the elimination of antibodies, i.e. within 1-6 months. Therefore, it is necessary to verify the diagnosis and the need of further treatment after this time
