Inference for covariate adjusted regression via varying coefficient models
We consider covariate adjusted regression (CAR), a regression method for
situations where predictors and response are observed after being distorted by
a multiplicative factor. The distorting factors are unknown functions of an
observable covariate, where one specific distorting function is associated with
each predictor or response. The dependence of both response and predictors on
the same confounding covariate may alter the underlying regression relation
between undistorted but unobserved predictors and response. We consider a class
of highly flexible adjustment methods for parameter estimation in the
underlying regression model, which is the model of interest. Asymptotic
normality of the estimates is obtained by establishing a connection to varying
coefficient models. These distribution results combined with proposed
consistent estimates of the asymptotic variance are used for the construction
of asymptotic confidence intervals for the regression coefficients. The
proposed approach is illustrated with data on serum creatinine, and finite
sample properties of the proposed procedures are investigated through a
simulation study.Comment: Published at http://dx.doi.org/10.1214/009053606000000083 in the

The survival of the “weakest” among the fittest: A critical reading of Miss Julie (1889) in relation to social Darwinism
The play Miss Julie is about the portrayal of the new image of feminist woman in the Victorian period. The playwright August Strindberg is mainly considered to be a misogynist as evidenced in his preface to Miss Julie, in which he defines miss Julie as man-hating and half woman with a “degenerate brain”. This representation of Miss Julie by a male author is likely to promote the idea that Strindberg presents the new ‘feminist’ woman as inferior and weak with a downfall in the end. However, the paper will dwell into the play by employing reader-response criticism to interpret the play to discover its multiple meanings rather than following the mainstream readings that rely on characteristics of the Victorian period. By employing a critical reading method, the paper will attempt to problematize social Darwinism in relation to gender roles as represented in the play, and by doing so it will challenge if not transform the social constructions of “weak women” that ideologically pertains today
Energy and Angular Momentum in Generic F(Riemann) Theories
We construct the conserved charge of generic gravity theories built on
arbitrary contractions of the Riemann tensor (but not on its derivatives) for
asymptotically (anti)-de Sitter spacetimes. Our construction is a
generalization of the ADT charges of linear and quadratic gravity theories in
cosmological backgrounds. As an explicit example we find the energy and angular
momentum of the BTZ black hole in the 2+1 dimensional Born-Infeld gravity.Comment: 7 page
“US cannot find a trustworthy partner than Turkey”
Speaking on a panel held by Ibn Haldun University, in cooperation with TURKEN Foundation USA, IHU President Recep Şentürk said that the US should work with the right partners in the Middle East. “Speaking about Middle East there is no other country for US to work with other than Turkey that is stable and trustworthy. It is important for US to cooperate with a legitimate and stable country rather than working together with illegal organizations and terrorist groups
What is a university?
lnaugural Lecture at the Alliance of Civilizations lnstitute. lbn Khaldun University February 15, 2017. -- Şentürk, Recep (IHU Author). Our great question is: "What is a university?" Whenever my colleagues ask me to address this question. 1 become worried, even fearful of tackling it. On the other hand, it is very exciting to talk about an issue about which 1 have been thinking my whole life. This is a big question. and adequate answer is a major challenge. 1 do not daim to give the final. ultimate answer to this question: rather. we will be thinking together about what a university is. 1 will first share with you my ideas and experiences and alsa my future vision of what a university is and should be.
