Fatigue resistance, elements industrial pipeline with propagation semi-elliptical fatigue crack

Industrial pipelines, most of all the ground-based ones intended to deliver chemicals, require more attention for their being potentially hazardous to both the population and the environment. The paper has been intended to present findings on the industrial pipeline’s fatigue life. The issue has been approached locally, i.e. from the standpoint of fatigue crack propagation. Two pipelines of different diameters of double-pressure acid systems were subjected to the assessment. Locally approached endurance tests were carried out under fatigue-crack-propagation conditions using specimens taken from a pipeline. Experiments were carried out using two test series: one from the material after some operational-use period, and one made of new material. Cracking initiators were made in the form of half elliptical cracks. Crack lengths were measured with the electric potential difference (EPD) method and optical wave-guides employed. Results of fatigue tests were then used to describe fatigue-cracking growth. On the grounds of results of fatigue tests, fatigue strength was determined and expressed with a number of cycles to failure.Przemysłowe rurociągi, przeznaczone dla naziemnego transportowania substancji chemicznych wymagają szczególnej uwagi ze względu ryzyka jaki oni mogę stwarzać jak dla ludności, tak i środowiska. W artykule zaprezentowane otrzymane dane o zmęczeniowym zniszczeniu przemysłowego rurociągu w trakcie eksploatacji. Zniszczenie było badane w określonym miejscu, czyli od punktu inicjacji zmęczeniowego pęknięcia. Były poddane analizie dwa rurociągi o różnych średnicach dla transportowania systemów dwóchwartościowego kwasu. Wytrzymałościowe próby, realizowane na wycinkach rur z rurociągu z pomiarami propagacji zmęczeniowego pęknięcia od punktu inicjacji. Badania doświadczalne realizowane w dwóch seriach: jedna na materiałowi po niektórym okresie eksploatacji, i druga, na próbkach zrobionych z nowego materiału. Inicjatory były wykonane w formie półeliptycznych pęknięć. Długość pięknieć była mierzona przy użyciu elektrycznej metodę potencjalnej różnicy (EPD) z wykorzystaniem optycznych czujników fali. Wyniki badań doświadczalnych wykorzystane dla opisu propagacji zmęczeniowego pięknienia. Na podstawie tych wyników było określone zmęczeniowe naprężenia oraz liczba cykli do zniszczenia

The picture of financial condition of Polish listed companies in 1995-2010 on the base of their cash flows initial evaluation

This article addresses the issue of the specificity and significance of the distribution of net cash flows from operating, investing and financing activities in determining of entities financial condition, especially in times of economic crisis. The author’s subject of interest is the variety of entity performance initial evaluation on the base of sectional streams of net cash flows. In the article the author presents results of the research based on polish listed companies cash flows, in the years 1995–2010 and provides initial conclusions from the study

Vitamin D status of severe COPD patients with chronic respiratory failure

Introduction: The aim of the study was to measure the concentrations of vitamin D in serum of COPD patients with chronic respiratoryfailure in comparison to healthy control group. The correlation between the levels of vitamin D in serum and the selectedclinical, spirometric and blood gas parameters was the additional aim of the study. Material and methods: The study included 61 patients with diagnosed COPD in stadium of chronic respiratory failure (45 menand 16 women) and 37 healthy controls (19 men and 18 women). The following procedure were performed in all studied subjects:detailed history (especially: daily activity, diet, tobacco and alcohol use), post-bronchodilator spirometry, assessment of 25(OH)Din serum and for COPD group only blood gas analysis. Recruitment for the study was conducted from November to April. Statisticalanalysis was performed using the following statistical methods: t-Student test, Mann-Whitney U test, Spearman correlationtest and Chi-kwadrat test. Results: There was no significant differences between COPD and control group for the levels of 25(OH)D in serum. Median andlower; upper quartile were respectively following: 24,75 nmol/l (16,9; 36,4) vs. 24,06 nmol/l (16,3; 37,2), p=0,69. Vitamin Ddeficiency was present in 60 COPD patients (98,3% of all patients) and in 36 control group subject (97,3% of all healthy volunteers).The difference was not statistically significant. The levels of vitamin D in serum did not significantly correlated with anyof studied parameters (spirometry, blood gas, age, the level of activity, BMI, tobacco smoke exposure and others). However, thelevel of activity in COPD group correlated positively with spirometry values and negatively with age and number of exacerbations. Conclusion: The results of the study showed that in autumn-winter time in Poland there are very frequent deficiency of vitaminD in serum not only in COPD patients in respiratory failure stage but also in elderly healthy persons. However, in contrary toexpectations the deficiency of vitamin D in COPD patients with respiratory failure were similar to that seen in healthy persons

Brugada syndrome is electrocardiographically characterised by ST segment elevation in right precordial leads and the occurrence of episodes of polymorphic ventricular tachycardia. It is also associated with a high risk of sudden death, which may be the first manifestation of the disease.
