In this work, the authors report on a quantitative investigation of lateral-force gradient and lateral force between a tungsten tip and Si(111)-(7×7) surface using combined noncontact lateral-force microscopy and scanning tunneling microscopy. Simultaneous lateral-force gradient and scanning tunneling microscopy images of single and multiatomic step are obtained. In our measurement, tunnel current is used as feedback. The lateral-stiffness contrast has been observed to be 2.5 N/m at a single atomic step, in contrast to 13 N/m at a multiatomic step on Si (111) surface. They also carried out a series of lateral stiffness-distance spectroscopy, which show a sharp increase in tip-surface interaction stiffness as the sample is approached toward the surface

Objective: To determine the effects of yttrium-90 (Y-90) resin microsphere radioembolization therapy on patients with unresectable liver cancer who do not benefit from chemotherapy. Methods: Fifty-five patients underwent radioembolization therapy included in the study whose had unresectable primary or metastatic liver cancer originating from the gastrointestinal tract. Three were excluded from the study after pre-evaluation angiography. Thirteen (23.6%) of the remaining 52 patients had hepatocellular carcinoma and 39 (76.4%) had metastatic liver cancer. Fifty-two patients underwent Y-90 radioembolization treatment. Each patient's response to the administered treatment was evaluated using the Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumors (RECIST) and the overall probability of survival was displayed graphically by the Kaplan-Meier method. Results: After Y-90 therapy, 47 patients were follow-up. While 57% of the patients responded to treatment as clinical benefit, the disease progressed in 43%. The median hepatic progression-free survival time of the patients was 3.4 months (95% confidence interval (ci):1.4-5.3) and the overall survival time was 11.3 months (95%, CI:8.7-14.03). Conclusion: This study emphasizes that Y-90 resin microsphere radioembolization treatment is effective in patients with unresectable liver cancer

Radiological screening of abdominal aortic aneurysm in individuals over 65

Objective: The aims of this study were to determine the prevalence of AAA in aged 65 years and above that had been referred for US screening, the association between risk factors for atherosclerosis and AAA, and the effectiveness of screening a population aged 65 years and above with atherosclerosis risk factors using ultrasound (US). Methods: Patients 65 years and over who had undergone US examination for any reason were invited to participate. The 600 patients (335 male, 265 female) who agreed to participate completed a survey of atherosclerosis risk factors. Aneurysm levels in patients with infrarenal or suprarenal AAA were measured using US. Statistical analysis was performed to identify the relationship between AAA and several atherosclerosis risk factors. Results: Of the 600 patients, 35 (5.8%; 33 male and 2 female) patients were diagnosed with AAA. Males and females represented 94.3% and 5.7% of the AAA-diagnosed population, respectively, and 5.5% and 0.3% of the screened population, respectively. Thirty of the AAA-diagnosed patients (85.7%) were between 65 and 79 years and 5 (14.3%) 80 years and above. A significant relationship was found between AAA and advanced age, male sex, smoking, and coronary artery disease and an inverse relationship between AAA and diabetes mellitus (p<0.05). Conclusion: Individuals age 65 and over with atherosclerotic risk factors for AAA should be screened to prevent possible rupture. Performance of US in radiology clinics is an effective means of identifying these patients

Objective: The aim of this study was to reveal patterns ofchronic venous insufficiency of lower extremity detectedby color Doppler ultrasound and clarify its clinical implicationsin the patients with varicose veins symptoms. Methods: Between 2006 to 2011, a total of 2006 patientspresented with symptoms of venous insufficiency wereincluded in study. A total of 3938 lower extremity venoussystems were examined using color Doppler US. Weclassified four patterns considering combinations of superficialand deep venous insufficiency. Results: Of 2006 patients, 966 had either single venousinsufficiency (790, 82%) or combined insufficiency (176,18%). Superficial venous insufficiency was observedat the saphenoefemoral junction (SFJ) in 25.5%, at theGreat Saphenous Vein (GSV) in 57.6%, at the GiacominiVein in 2.4%, at the saphenopopliteal junction in 1.8% andfinally at the Small Saphenous Vein (SSV) in 9.1% of thepatients. We found multilevel venous insufficiency showingconnections at the rate of 51%. We described fourpatterns as Pattern 1: SFJ insufficiency combined withGSV (97.9%), GSV branching (7.1%), and perforatingvein (20.8%) insufficiency, Pattern 2: Deep venous insufficiencycombined with SFJ (63.6%), GSV (76.4%), andSSV (16.4%) insufficiency, Pattern 3: SPJ insufficiencycombined with SSV insufficiency (95.5%) and Pattern 4:Giacomini Vein insufficiency combined with GSV (67.9%)and SSV (75%) insufficiency. Conclusion: Chronic venous insufficiency may show fourdifferent patterns. Our results revealed that SFJ and GSVinsufficiency combination and deep venous insufficiencyand GSV insufficiency combinations are the most commoninsufficiency patterns seen in lower extremity.Key words: Doppler ultrasound, varicose veins, venous insufficienc

In this report, we presented a forty-six years old female patient with a solitary pulmonary nodule who had been diagnosed as cholesterol granuloma of the lung after surgical intervention. Previously reported aetiologic factors of cholesterol granuloma were investigated but no risk factor was detected.Soliter pulmoner nodul ile başvuran, cerrahi girişim sonrası yapılan patolojik incelemelerde pulmoner kolesterol granülomu tanısı alan, daha önce bildirilen etiyolojik faktörler araştırıldığında buna ait herhangi bir bulgu saptanmayan kırk altı yaşındaki kadın olguyu sunduk
