Syrian immigrants in Turkey: services, satisfaction and suggestions for policy-making

Due to the 8 years’ war in Syria, Turkey faced the immigration of more than 3.5 million Syrian refugees. About a million of them are settled in the region Çukurova. Allthough most of them do not have a permanent residence permit it may be expected that a vast number of these Syrian migrants will settle permanently. The majority of this immigrant population is non or low-educated; they rarely participate in education programmes and intercultural communication disorders with the local community and societal tensions occur. Surveys have been conducted among adult Syrian immigrants living in Çukurova in order to identify whether their satisfaction about local services. Secondly, services and communication strategies of public institutions, municipalities and NGOs in the Adana, the main city in the region have been analysed in order to identify the range and effects of their services. Assuming that a lack of integration and intercultural communication disorders cause disturbance in the local communities, this study aims to investigate possible solutions - with the use of the integration policy of the Netherlands – in order to prevent societal unrest.

Early Intervention to Further Migrant Children’s Success in Turkish Education: The Example of the Netherlands

This study aims to highlight the problems of Syrian children in the educational proces and the relationships between family, school and social environment with examples. Besides, factors that hamper Syrian children’s participation and success in education will be identified and possible solutions for these problems will be presented by adressing Netherlands. To achieve peace in a multicultural society, it is necessary to remove mutual prejudices, create mutual empathy and achieve respect for cultural differences. Therefore, teachers in schools with a migrant children’s population need to be competent in the field of intercultural communication. Aiming to make them a productive citizin, problems in the education of migrant children urgently need to be solved. Coping with this relatively new phenomenon, educational progress of Syrian children can possibly be reached with the use of good practices of migrant children’s education in the Netherlands

Covid-19 Pandemi Sürecine Yönelik Kamu Spotlarının Etkinliği Üzerine Bir Araştırma

Bu çalışmanın amacı salgın döneminde kamusal duyarlılığın sağlanmasına ve kamusal davranışların etkilenmesine yönelik yapılan kamu spotlarında kullanılan iletişim stratejilerinin etkinliğinin incelemesi ve dijital ortamlardaki söylemlerin ele alınması, böylece yaşam dengesinin stratejik öneminin iletişim perspektifi ve motivasyonu açısından ortaya çıkartılmasıdır. Bu amaca yönelik olarak İletişim Fakültesinde öğrenim gören 116 kişi üzerinde açık uçlu sorular ve anket tekniği ile bir araştırma yapılmıştır. Araştırma bulgularına göre kamu spotlarının: koruyucu davranışlara odaklanmak, olumlu bilgi iletmek, zihinlerde oluşan kaygı ve belirsizlikleri yok etmek için düzeltici eylem rolü üstlenmek ve toplumun salgın döneminde olumsuzluklarla psikolojik olarak başa çıkmak açısından olumlu bir motivasyon kaynağı olarak görüldüğü bulgusuna ulaşılmıştır. Araştırma sonucunda özelliklede ileti- şim stratejileri tasarlanırken empati yapılmasının ve duyguların hesaba katılmasının önemi ortaya çıkartılmıştır. Diğer yandan dijital ortamlarda toplumun iletişimsel davranışlara nasıl dâhil oldukları, kamusal davranışları farklı şekillerde nasıl etkilediği ve dijital ortamlarda iletişimsel uygulamaların gücü ve etkisi araştırılmıştır. Araştırma bulgularına göre dijital ortamlarda genellikle halk sağlığına yönelik olumsuz içerikte paylaşımlar yapılmaktadır. Dijital ortamlarda bilgilerin manipüle edilebilmesi, verimsiz tartışmalar ve ilgisiz konular ile verilen tepkilerin öfke, hayal kırıklığı, stres, korku, güvensizlik, alaycılık vb. çok sayıda olumsuz duygular yaratabilme potansiyeline sahip olduğu bulgusu- na ulaşılmıştır
