    Modern and traditional cooking methods affect the antioxidant activity and phenolic compounds content of Trachystemon Orientalis (L.) G. Don

    Trachystemon orientalis (L.) G. Don is a medicinal plant with beneficial effects on human health. Its antioxidant and phenolic compound content is higher than most natural plants. This is the first study on the cooking of this consumed plant. This study investigated how different cooking methods and times affect the antioxidant activity and phenolic compound content of Trachystemon orientalis (L.) G. Don. The Folin-Ciocalteu method (FCR), ferric-reducing antioxidant power (FRAP), copper-reducing antioxidant capacity (CUPRAC), and 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity were used to evaluate the antioxidant activity and total phenolic content (TPC). Phenolic compounds were also determined by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Microwave cooking, stir-frying and sous vide increased TPC and antioxidant activity (p<0.05). Steaming decreased TPC and antioxidant activity (p<0.05). It was determined that the best cooking method and time was stir-frying for 15 minutes (TPC, CUPRAC and FRAP values 45.18 +/- 3.91 mg GAE/g DW, 15559.39 +/- 106.90 mmol Troloks/g DW and 555.10 +/- 24.05 mu mol Fe (II)/g DW, respectively). Raw Trachystemon orientalis (L.) G. Don was detected with caffeic acid (31.53 +/- 0.25 mg/100 g DW). New phenolic compounds (protocatechuic acid and p-coumaric acid) were formed by boiling, stir-frying, microwaving, and sous vide methods. In conclusion, regarding antioxidant activity and phenolic compounds of Trachystemon orientalis (L.) G. Don; the best cooking methods are microwave, stir-frying, and sous vide (p<0.05). The most wrong cooking method is steaming (p<0.05)

    İleri glikasyon son ürünleri, çok çeşitli yapısal ve fonksiyonel özelliklere sahip, herhangi bir canlı organizmada oluşan ve enzimatik olmayan bileşiklerdir. İleri glikasyon son ürünleri reseptöre veya doğrudan hücre dışı matrikse bağlanır ve hücre dışı moleküllerin istenilen şekilde çalışmamasına yol açar. İleri glikasyon son ürünleri ve reseptör etkileşimleri inflamasyon, oksidatif stres, vasküler hiperpermeabilite ile sonuçlanarak vaskülatürde homeostatik bozulmaya neden olur. Oksidatif bozukluklar ve inflamasyon; gestasyonel diyabet, preeklemsi, erken doğum, erken membran rüptürü ve tekrarlayan gebelik kaybı gibi olumsuz gebelik sonuçları ile ilişkilidir. Literatüre bakıldığında inflamasyon fetal membranları zayıflatarak erken rüptüre ve erken doğuma sebep olabilmektedir. İleri glikasyon son ürünleri düzeyinin yüksek olması ve bozulmuş metabolik durumun gebelikte preeklemsinin fizyopatolojisine etki ettiği gestasyonel diabetes mellitus ve tekrarlayan gebelik kayıpları ile ilişkilendirildiği belirtilmektedir. Çalışmalar, gebelik ve AGE’lerin düzeyi arasında güçlü bir ilişki olduğunu göstermektedir. AGE’ler ve gebelik arasındaki nedensel ilişkiyi bulmak için daha iyi tasarlanmış çalışmalar yapılması literatür açısından önem taşımaktadır

    A study of the relationship between university students’ food neophobia and their tendencies towards orthorexia nervosa

    Food neophobia, known as an avoidance of the consumption of unknown foods, can negatively impact nutritional quality. In orthorexia nervosa, there is an excessive mental effort to consume healthy food. Individuals exhibiting symptoms of food neophobia and orthorexia nervosa may experience food restrictions. This study aimed to assess food neophobia levels and orthorexia nervosa tendencies among university students, investigate the potential association between the two constructs, and explore the effect of the demographic characteristics of the participants on the variables. This is a descriptive cross-sectional study. The study sample consisted of 609 students enrolled at Recep Tayyip Erdoğan University. The data were collected through Google Forms using a sociodemographic information form, the Food Neophobia Scale, and the ORTO-11 scale. Ethics committee approval and institutional permission were obtained for the study. Of the students participating in the survey, 71.9% were female, 14.6% were classified as neophobic, and 47.1% had orthorexia nervosa symptoms. The mean scores from the Food Neophobia Scale (39.41 ± 9.23) and the ORTO-11 scale (27.43 ± 5.35) were in the normal range. Food neophobia was significantly higher among those who did not consume alcohol. Orthorexia nervosa symptoms were significantly more common among married people. In the correlation analysis, no significant relationship was found between age, food neophobia, and orthorexia nervosa. It can be said that food neophobia in this study is similar to in other studies conducted on university students. In addition, about half of the participants had symptoms of orthorexia nervosa. This result is higher compared to other studies conducted with university students. The findings of this study indicate that the participants care about the healthfulness of food

    Resting-state EEG alpha/theta power ratio discriminates early-onset Alzheimer's disease from healthy controls

    © 2021 International Federation of Clinical NeurophysiologyObjectives: The present study aims to compare early-onset Alzheimer's disease (EOAD) patients with healthy controls (HC), and late-onset Alzheimer's disease (LOAD) patients using resting-state delta, theta, alpha, and beta oscillations and provide a cut-off score of alpha/theta ratio to discriminate individuals with EOAD and young HC. Methods: Forty-seven individuals with EOAD, 51 individuals with LOAD, and demographically-matched 49 young and 51 older controls were included in the study. Spectral-power analysis using Fast-Fourier Transformation (FFT) is performed on resting-state electroencephalography (EEG) data. Delta, theta, alpha, and beta oscillations compared between groups and Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curve analysis was conducted. Results: Compared to healthy controls individuals with EOAD showed an increase in slow frequency bands and a decrease in fast frequency bands. Frontal alpha/theta power ratio is the best discriminating value between EOAD and young HC with the sensitivity and specificity greater than 80% with area under the curve (AUC) 0.881. Conclusions: EOAD display more widespread and severe electrophysiological abnormalities than LOAD and HC which may reflect more pronounced pathological burden and cholinergic deficits in EOAD. Additionally, the alpha/theta ratio can discriminate EOAD and young HC successfully. Significance: This study is the first to report that resting-state EEG power can be a promising marker for diagnostic accuracy between EOAD and healthy controls

    Sudden Death Due To Rupture Of Dissection Of The Aorta: Three Cases

    Acute aorta dissection is an urgent condition that presented with chest pain, back or abdominalpain and usually resulted with death. We presented three autopsy performed cases thatdetermined cardiac tamponade developed secondary to aortic dissection. Three of them weremale and their ages were 36, 49 and 62 years. Death was occurred after back and epigastric painin two patients while other patient was found dead in home. All of them did not have any diseasein history. Death rates could be reduced under to %50 with intervention on time so the possibilityof aorta dissection must not be forgotten in cases with abdomen, thorax or back pain onadmission
