    Determination of The Relationship Between Hopelessness-Depression Frequency and Socio- Demographic Features in Students of School of Medicine, Suleyman Demirel University

    Aim:Depression and hopelessness, cause impairment in the quality of life and leads to the loss of one's efficiency are important problems. The purpose of this study is to search the frequency of depression and hopelessness and its relations with socio-demographic characteristics among medical students.Materials and Methods:This is a cross sectional analytical study. It was conducted 2-4 March 2009 between. 1st, 2nd, and 3rd year students from the Faculty of Medicine, Suleyman Demirel University were included in the study. 236 of a total 330 students (68.5 %) participated in the study. A questionnaire which aims to determine the students’ socio-demographic characteristics, Beck depression inventory and Beck hopelessness scale were applied under observation to the participants. According to the Beck depression inventory, those who scored 17 and over were classified as possible depressive. Data were evaluated statistically.Results:The average score of the students according to Beck hopelessness scale was found 5.3±4.6. According to Beck depression inventory 64 of the students (28.3%) were found to be possible depressive. The average Beck hopelessness scale score was higher for possible depressive students compared to the others (p=0.00). Depression scores was higher among the first year students compared to the others (p=0.03), higher among the females compared the males (p=0.02) and higher among dwelling in dorm compared to not dwelling in dorm (p=0.001). When the age of students, monthly income of family, the educational status of the parents were compared with hopelessness and depression rates there was no statistically significant relation.Conclusion:As a result, depression rates were high in basic medical students, furthermore hopelessness scores were found high among possible depressive students. Medical students should be given guidance and counseling service. Effective monitoring and prevention programs should be developed in order to lower the possible effects of depression and hopelessness on their future professional lives

    Amaç Depresyon ve umutsuzluk kişinin verimliliğini kaybetmesine, yaşam kalitesinin bozulmasına neden olan önemli problemlerdir. Bu çalışmanın amacı tıp fakültesi öğrencilerinde depresyon ve umutsuzluk sıklığını ve sosyodemografik özelliklerle arasındaki ilişkiyi araştırmaktır. Materyal ve Metod Kesitsel-analitik tipte olan bu çalışma 02–04 Mart 2009 tarihleri arasında yürütüldü. Süleyman Demirel Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi birinci, ikinci ve üçüncü sınıf öğrencileri çalışmaya dahil edildi. Çalışmaya 330 öğrenciden 226’sı (% 68,5) katıldı. Öğrencilere, sosyodemografik özelliklerini saptamaya yönelik anket formu, Beck Depresyon Ölçeği, Beck Umutsuzluk Ölçeği gözlem altında uygulandı. Beck depresyon ölçeğine göre 17 ve üzeri puan alanlar olası depresif olarak sınıflandırıldı. Veriler istatistiksel olarak değerlendirildi. Bulgular Öğrencilerin Beck umutsuzluk ölçeği puan ortalamaları 5,3±4,6 bulundu. Beck depresyon ölçeğine göre 64’ü (%28,3) olası depresif bulundu. Olası depresif olanlarda Beck umutsuzluk ölçeği puan ortalaması normal olanlara göre daha yüksekti (p=0.00). Birinci sınıf öğrencilerinde diğer sınıflardaki öğrencilere göre (p=0.03), kızlarda erkeklere göre (p=0.02), yurtta kalan öğrencilerde ise yurtta kalmayanlara göre (p=0.001) depresyon puanları daha yüksek bulundu. Öğrencilerin yaşları, ailenin aylık gelir düzeyleri, ebeveynlerinin öğrenim durumları ile umutsuzluk ve depresyon oranları karşılaştırıldığında aralarında istatistiksel olarak anlamlı bir ilişki bulunmadı. Sonuç Sonuç olarak, temel tıp öğrencilerinde depresyon oranı yüksek olmakla birlikte, olası depresif öğrencilerde umutsuzluk puanları da yüksek bulunmuştur. Tıp öğrencilerine rehberlik ve danışmanlık hizmetlerinin verilmesi, mezuniyet sonrası depresyon ve umutsuzluğun mesleki yaşantılarına olabilecek etkilerini azaltmaya yönelik etkili önleme ve izleme programlarının geliştirilmesi uygun olacaktır.Aim Depression and hopelessness, cause impairment in the quality of life and leads to the loss of one's efficiency are important problems.     Abstract. Sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) is known as one of the most important and preferred vegetable oil producing plants. In recent years, new cultivars with high oleic acid contents have been developed because of their health effects, extended frying and shelf life. On the other hand, nutrition of the plants is important for healthy growth, high yield, and oil quality and their nutrient needs may differ between the plant species and varieties. We aimed to determine the -1 effects of increasing application doses of nitrogen (N) (0, 16, 32, 48, and 64 mg.kg N) on growth and on some nutrient element uptake of four sunflower hybrids and compare the nutritional differences of linoleic (ESNovamis CL, and LG 5542 CL) and high-oleic (Oliva CL and ESGrafic CL) type sunflower hybrids in a greenhouse. The experiment was conducted in randomized factorial design with three replicates. Increasing doses of N effected the dry matter and nutrient uptake of sunflower hybrids significantly (p<0.01). Increasing doses of N elevated the dry weight, N, phosphorus (P), potassium (K), calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), sodium (Na), iron (Fe), zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), manganese (Mn) and boron (B) uptake of all tested sunflower hybrids. The increases were found maximum -1 at 32 mg.kg N dose. Significant differences were also established between the hybrids. Among the tested hybrids, ESGrafic CLa high oleic type sunflower has higher nutrient uptake capacity so much more nutrients might be supplied to this new generation sunflower hybrids according to the soil and plant analysis results

    The acute effects of chemotherapy upon the oral cavity: Prevention and management

    The oral and dental complications arising in cancer patients can be attributable to the malignant disease itself and to the various modalities of cancer therapy. Up to 40% of all patients receiving cancer chemotherapy develop acute oral complications. Oral complications may result in significant morbidity, impaired nutrition, treatment delays, and dose reductions which are affecting the prognosis of the primary disease. Many investigators have developed a series of clinical trials designed to study treatment modalities for these pathologic processes. These trials have demonstrated clinically helpful therapies and also have demonstrated lack of benefit for other proposed treatments. In this article we aimed to assess acute oral complications in cancer patients due to chemotherapy and review the recent treatment modalities for prevention and management of those complications since these changes in physiologic process are still problems that need further investigation

    Hydraulic conductivity of two geosynthetic clay liners permeated with a hyperalkaline solution

    GCLs containing powdered Na-bentonite treated with different dosages of a proprietary additive intended to reduce the impacts of chemical interactions were permeated with three solutions: a hyperalkaline solution (1 M NaOH and 1.3 mM CsCl) having similar pH to aluminum refining leachate, a 1.3 mM CsCl solution (no NaOH). and DI water. For a given permeant solution, the hydraulic conductivity of both GCLs was similar. Thus, the higher additive dosage had no measureable impact on hydraulic conductivity. Hydraulic conductivity of both GCLs decreased by a factor of approximately 1.5-1.8 during permeation with CsCl in response to osmotic swelling induced by the low ionic strength of the CsCl solution entering the pore space. In contrast, permeation with the NaOH-CsCl solution caused the hydraulic conductivity of both GCLs to increase modestly (<50 times the hydraulic conductivity to DI water), and then level out (or decrease slightly) as a result of reduced osmotic swelling in the interlayer combined with dissolution of the mineral. For the tests conducted with CsCl solution, nearly all of the Cs was adsorbed by the bentonite. In contrast, Cs broke through readily when the NaOH-CsCl solution was used as the permeant solution. Permeation with the NaOH-CsCl solution also increased the sodicity of the bentonite by replacing bound K, Ca, and Mg on the mineral surface. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved

    Autoimmune hemolytic anemia occuring with myelodysplastic syndrome: Report of a pediatric case and review of the literature

    In this case report, we present a child who was admitted to hospital with the features of autoimmune hemolytic anemia (AIHA) and was diagnosed with myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS)-related AIHA. A 14-year-old female patient was admitted to our hospital with the chief complaints of palpitation, icterus, and fatigue for 2 months. She was pale and icteric. Diffuse hepatosplenomegaly was palpated. Hematological examination revealed a hemoglobin of 3.4 g/dl, red blood cell count of 2×1012/l, white blood cell count of 3×109/l, platelet count of 14×109/l, and reticulocyte count of 1.7%. Blood smear examination revealed significant anisocytosis, poikilocytosis, and tear drop cells. The direct Coomb's test was positive. Bone marrow aspirate showed hypercellularity, micromegakaryocytes, dyserythropoiesis, and dysmyelopoiesis with 2% blasts. The patient was diagnosed with MDS-refractory anemia and AIHA secondary to MDS. Rarely, AIHA can occur secondary to MDS. To our knowledge, this patient is the first pediatric case with MDS and AIHA reported in the literature

    Organoclays as Variably Permeable Reactive Barrier Media to Manage NAPLs in Ground Water

    Three commercial organoclays were evaluated as media for a variably permeable reactive barrier (VPRB) to manage coal-tar creosote, a non-aqueous-phase liquid (NAPL) consisting primarily of polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Organoclays and organoclay-sand mixtures having at least 25% organoclay had NAPL conductivities of less than 10(-10) m/s, whereas hydraulic conductivities to water were on the order of 0.001 m/s. Water migration was negligible in organoclays solvated with NAPL, but PAHs were released to the aqueous phase when the solvated clay contacted deionized water. Sorption isotherms for aqueous-phase PAHs are convex upward within the range of concentrations of environmental interest, and greater sorption occurs when the aqueous phase contains multiple PAHs. In column tests, breakthrough occurred for only naphthalene (lowest K-ow) and for only one organoclay (lowest organic carbon content) for tests on 100% organoclay and organoclay-sand mixtures conducted for 208-276 pore volumes of flow (PVF). Breakthrough predicted with solute transport analyses conducted using batch isotherm parameters as input occurred later than observed in the column test because isotherm models fit to the batch test data overpredicted sorption at low concentrations. The findings indicate that organoclays should be effective media for VPRBs to manage creosote NAPL and associated PAHs dissolved in groundwater. They block NAPL advection, readily permit the flow of water with dissolved PAHs, and sorb dissolved PAHs from water flowing through the clays. DOI: 10.1061/(ASCE)GT.1943-5606.0000572.
