    Get PDF
This study addresses the issue of the Information Technology (IT) Governance frameworks and standards that respond to different levels of operational risks, especially those caused by the information systems and technology infrastructure. A requirement analysis regarding Basel II is conducted, a gap analysis between the Information Control Models (ICMs) is performed, and the aggregated IT checklist for Operational Risk Management (ORM) is proposed by mapping the control objectives in ICMs to the operational risk categories described in Basel II as loss event types. The validity and reliability of the study is based on the focus group assessment of the mappingsBasel II, Operational Risk Management, Information Control Model, Information Technology Governance.

Concrete beams were strengthened by wrapping the shear edges of the beams twice at 45° in opposite directions by either carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) or glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP). The study included 3 CFRP wrapped beams, 3 GFRP wrapped beams, and 3 control beams, all of which were 150 × 250 × 2200 mm and manufactured with C20 concrete and S420a structural steel at the Gazi University Technical Education Faculty labs, Turkey. Samples in molds were cured by watering in the open air for 21 days. Four-point bending tests were made on the beam test specimens and the data were collected. Data were evaluated in terms of load displacement, bearing strength, ductility, and energy consumption. In the CFRP and GFRP reinforced beams, compared to controls, 38% and 42%, respectively, strength increase was observed. In all beams, failure-flexural stress occurred in the center as expected. Most cracking was observed in the flexural region 4. A comparison of CFRP and GFRP materials reveals that GFRP enforced parts absorb more energy. Both materials yielded successful results. Thicker epoxy application in both CFRP and GFRP beams was considered to be effective in preventing break-ups

Zeugma as the provenance of 12 mosaic fragments at Bowling Green State University

Bowling Green State University (BGSU) in Ohio is the current owner of 12 sections of floor mosaic dating to the 2nd-3rd c. A.D. Purchased by the university in 1965, these mosaic fragments were believed to be from the site of Antioch. In 2010-11, the mosaics were conserved and installed in BGSU’s Wolfe Center. In the following year the first-named author, organizing a symposium to celebrate the new display of the mosaics, invited R. Molholt to be the keynote speaker. During the course of preparing their respective papers for the symposium, she and Molholt uncovered evidence that an Antioch provenance for the mosaics was most unlikely, and Molholt determined that the mosaic fragments were almost certainly from the site of Zeugma. We offer here a preliminary publication of the fragments, along with evidence to support our proposed provenance

Microbial bile salt hydrolases (BSHs) catalyse the hydrolysis of glycine and taurine-linked bile salts in the small intestine of humans. Achieving the effects of structural changes in BSH molecules on biocatalytic efficiency (kcat/Km) and activation energy (Ea) is necessary to determine biocatalytic performances of the enzymes. Amino acids responsible for biocatalytic activity or substrate specificity in BSH molecules were modified to determine the effects of structural changes on kcat/Km values and Ea values of the bioconversion reactions. Purified wild type positive control enzyme (pCON2) and mutant recombinant target enzymes (F18L and Y24L) reacted with six conjugated pure bile salt substrates at working temperature and pH conditions. The results of the hydrolysis conversion analysis conducted at various pH conditions were used to estimate kcat/Km, and the assays conducted at various temperature conditions were used to approximate Ea of the biocatalytic reactions. The quantified kcat/Km value was found remarkably highest with mutant recombinant enzymes (Y24L), while the efficiency value with wild type (pCON2) was determined as lowest, indicating that the structural modifications in BSH molecules showed higher values. The alterations with the mutant-type enzymes F18L and Y24L resulted in decreasing kcat/Km and increasing Ea estimations of the hydrolysis conversion reactions.Mikrobne hidrolaze žučnih soli (BSH) kataliziraju hidrolizu soli glicina i taurina u tankom crijevu ljudi.

“Hamlet”, Shakespeare’in kurguladığı “Hamlet” değil, Kaurismäki’nin kurguladığı “Hamlet” olmuştur

Objectives:To evaluate the repeatability and agreement of macular thickness measurements obtained with E-MM5 and MM6, two different scan modes, on the Optovue RTVue optic coherence tomography (OCT) device.Materials and Methods:Three consecutive macular thickness measurements in 30 healthy volunteers were taken using the OCT device E-MM5 and MM6 scan modes. The repeatability and agreement of these measurements obtained from the two scan modes and divided into nine anatomical regions based on early treatment diabetic retinopathy study were subjected to statistical analysis. Results:The mean age of the participants was 29.7±6.39 years. Intraclass correlation (all ICC values ≥0.86) and coefficient of variation (all coefficient of variation values ≤2%) analyses of consecutive OCT measurements in the nine regions of the macula obtained in both E-MM5 and MM6 scan modes gave high repeatability rates. Mean macular thickness values in the foveal region were 243.76±21.79 μm in E-MM5 mode and 247.04±19.83 μm in MM6 mode (p=0.543). Values for measurements obtained in E-MM5 and MM6 scan modes in parafoveal macular regions were also statistically similar (p>0.05 for all). However, a statistically significant difference was observed between the two modes in perifoveal macular measurements, except in the superior region. Conclusion:The Optovue RTVue OCT device gives highly repeatable measurement results for macular thicknesses in both E-MM5 and MM6 scan modes. However, it should be considered that measurements performed in E-MM5 and MM6 modes give different results in perifoveal regions

Origin and nature of the mineralizing fluids of thrust zone fluorites in Çelikhan (Adiyaman, Eastern Turkey): A geochemical approach

    Get PDF
The Çelikhan fluorite mineralization is concentrated in the thrust zone between the Pinarbasi Formation, which forms the hanging wall, and the Kalecik Limestone foot wall. Fluorite occurs as fracture fills in the thrust zone and as replacement of the foot wall. The wall rock alteration consists of calcite, barite, quartz and kaolinite. The total REE contents of the country rocks, especially the mica- and calc-schists of the Pinarbasi formation at 519 ppm, are higher than those of fluorites. The chondrite normalized REE patterns of country rock and fluorites display generally identical trends. However, fluorite patterns show positive Eu and negative Ce anomaly indicative of low temperature and high fo2 conditions. Cross plots of the Tb/Ca – Tb/La, (La/Yb)n – (Tb/Yb)n and (La/Yb)n (Eu/Eu*)n ratios of the fluorites indicate deposition by low temperature hydrothermal waters. The REE and F were probably leached from the Pinarbasi Formation by the mineralizing solutions. The mineralizing fluids are probably meteoric and formation waters heated at depth along the thrust zone by the natural thermal gradient and/or formation waters heated and mobilized by thrusting

We report a case with symptoms of facial swelling, bilateral facial paralysis, dysphagia and aspiration. On electrophysiological studies, the right facial nerve was not excitable. The left facial nerve compound muscle action potential (CMAP) amplitude was severely dispersed and latency was mildly prolonged, consistent with demyelination. Cerebrospinal fluid examinations were normal. Antiganglioside antibodies and tumor markers were negative. Bickerstaff brainstem. encephalitis, stoke, diabetes mellitus, vasculitis, sarcoidosis, Sjogren's syndrome, Melkersson-Rosenthal Syndrome, trauma, infectious diseases, toxicity, neoplasm, facial onset sensory and motor neuronopathy (FOSMN) and other degenerative diseases were excluded. Intravenous immunoglobulin therapy resolved symptoms of lower cranial nerve dysfunction. Clinically incomplete improvement of bilateral facial paralysis was observed. We conclude that IVIg therapy may improve the symptoms of multiple cranial nerve palsies clue to pharyngo-facial variant of Guillain-Barre syndrome

    Self-Assembled Short Peptide Nanostructures: ‘’Dipeptides’’

    Get PDF
Dipeptides are short peptide molecules formed by the peptide bond between two amino acids, and they play significant roles in various biological processes (such as protein synthesis, nutrient absorption, cellular signaling, immune response). Short peptides have a prominent place in the design of self-assembling materials. In particular, dipeptides have gained considerable attention in the field of biotechnology as a type of self-organizing nanostructure due to their low cost, simplicity of synthesis, biocompatibility, and tunability of functionality. However, there is limited knowledge about peptide and protein-based nanostructures in the literature. Therefore, more information is needed on dipeptide nanostructures, especially in terms of their potential applications for biomedical purposes. This review focuses on dipeptide nanostructures, particularly their potential uses in biomedical applications, and provides a broader perspective on the advantages, challenges, synthesis, interactions, and applications of these nanostructures

The aim of this research was examining the mathematical thinking of athletes who are actively engaged in sports in a sports club in terms of various variables. The research was designed as a screening model. The sample of the study consisted of 229 licensed athletes in various clubs. The "Mathematical Thinking Scale" developed by Ersoy (2012) was used in the research. Percentage frequency analysis was used for descriptive analyzes in the analyzes of the data. Mann Whitney-U and Kruskal-Wallis tests were performed among the non-parametric tests to measure the differences between the groups. According to the results of the research, the scores of the athletes depending on the gender variables on the mathematical thinking scale do not differ statistically. According to the educational variables, the total scores of the athletes attending primary education on the mathematical thinking scale are significantly higher than the other groups, and athletes with the lowest scores were the ones that still continue their undergraduate studies. According to the gender variables, there was a difference only in the scores of the problem-solving sub-dimension in mathematical thinking scale dimensions. When the educational status is analyzed by variables, statistical differences are observed among subscales of the mathematical thinking scale except for reasoning. There was no statistically significant difference between the total scores of individual athletes (billiards, tennis, shooting, archery) on the mathematical thinking scale and the scores they got from all subscales of the scale. In the case of team athletes (football, volleyball, basketball), there was a statistically significant difference in favour of those who played soccer and volleyball sports between the total scores they received on the mathematical thinking scale and the scores they received from all the subscales of the scale
