    Determination of fatty acid composition in relation to the growth of meagre (Argyrosomus regius) cultured in net cages

    The aim of this study was to determine the composition of fatty acids of meagre (Argyrosomus regius) produced in net cages at a private company in the Aegean Sea. Regular samples were taken over the study period by random sampling for the estimation of fatty acid contents. At the end of the study, the highest mean (± SD) fatty acids in fish flesh were recorded as oleic acid (26.46 ± 0.01%), linoleic acid (20.91 ± 0.01%) and palmitic acid (15.99 ± 0.01%). Mean (± SD) total saturated (SFA), monounsaturated (MUFA) and polyunsaturated (PUFA) fatty acid values were determined as 26.17 ± 0.03%, 32.62 ± 0.03% and 31.24 ± 0.01% respectively. The total values of omega-3, omega-6, omega-9, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) were 8.73 ± 0.01 – 14.51 ± 0.04%, 18.78 ± 0.03 – 25.26 ± 0.01%, 27.12 ± 0.01 – 30.5 ± 0.01%, 1.39 ± 0.01 – 3.52 ± 0.01% and 4.24 ± 0.01 – 7.64 ± 0.01% respectively and all these values varied significantly over time (P < 0.05). Despite having a low crude fat content, the meagre could be a good source of PUFA, in terms of fatty acids

    Effects of certain environmental factors on growth performances of Kivircik lambs

    Determining the growth performance of lambs is essential for producers to supply the lamb meat with the features demanded by the market as soon as possible. Therefore, the study aimed to determine the effect of year, birth type and sex of lamb on body weight and various body measurements of Kivircik lambs. Live weights of 612 Kivircik lambs (299 males and 313 females) were used in the study, which were born in 2014, 2015 and 2016. Body measurements of 47 male lambs and 50 female lambs, randomly selected from 508 lambs born in 2014 and 2016, were used in the study. Birth year had significant effect on both live weights and body measurements of lambs in various growth periods. Single born and male lambs are significantly superior in both live weight and body measurements over female and twin born lambs. This situation results in being preferred for both meat production and breeding purposes more than their opponents. In order to have a more productive herd structure, female and twin lambs should be reared according to their needs for a better growth performance. Rump height of single born lambs and chest depth of male lambs were higher than their counterparts throughout the study. Therefore, these two body measurements can be used as reliable parameters for investigation of growth performance of Kivircik lambs

    Investigation of PCB ve PAHsin Soil: Alikahya Region

    Bu çalışmada, Kocaeli İli Alikahya bölgesinden toprak numuneleri alınarak, organik kirleticilerden PoliklorluBifeniller (PCB) ve Poliaromatik Hidrokarbonlar (PAH) incelenmiştir. Bölgede örnekleme yaklaşık 2,5 km yarıçaplı dairesel bir alanda, koordinatları önceden belirlenen 6 farklı noktada yapılmıştır. Bu yarıçaplı alanın çevresinde yerleşim yerleri, endüstriyel tesisler, TEM otoyolu, E-5 karayolu ve atık yakma tesisi bulunmaktadır. Belirlenen noktalar, atık yakma tesisinin kuzey, güney, doğu ve batı yönlerinde yani her bir yöndeki durumu temsil edecek şekilde seçilmiştir. 5 ve 30 cm derinliklerden alınan numunelerde öncelikle ekstraksiyon işlemi yapılmıştır. PCB ve PAH konsantrasyonları Gaz Kromatografi/Kütle Spektrometresi kullanılarak belirlenmiştir. Konsantrasyonlar "Toprak Kirliliği Kontrolü ve Noktasal Kaynaklı Kirlenmiş Sahalara Dair Yönetmeliği" (TKKY)' ndeki sınır değerler ile karşılaştırılmıştır. Alınan numunelerde Yönetmeliğe göre sınır değerlerini aşan PCB türevlerinden bazılarının tesisin kuzey ve doğu yönünde olduğu belirlenmiştir. PAH türevleri arasında, Benzo(a)antrasen ve Benzo(a)piren'in numunelerin alındığı tüm yönlerde, Benzo(k)florantenveBenzo(b)floranten'in kuzey, doğu ve batı yönlerinde, Dibenz(a.h)antrasen'in kuzey ve batı yönlerinde, İnden(1.2.3-cd) piren'in ise batı yönünde sınır değerleri aştığı belirlenmiştirIn this study, Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs) andPolycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) were investigated in the soil samples taken from Alikahya, Kocaeli. For this purpose, Sampling was conducted in a circular area with a Radius of approximately 2,5 km at six points of which coordinates are determined before. There are residential places, industrial facilities, TEM highway, E-5 motorway and a waste incineration plant around the area. The soil samples were collected from north, south, east and west side of a waste incineration plant. Samples were taken from 5 to 30 cm depth within 1,25 km and 2,5 km Radius of incineration plant. PCB and PAH concentrations in the soil samples were determined by Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry (GC/MS). The determined concentrations of these pollutants in the soil were compared with the limit values of Turkish Soil Contaminated Sites on Point Source Pollution Control and Regulation. Among the PCB derivatives, whose concentration shave exceeded the limit values of the regulation, were measured at North and east direction. Among PAH derivatives, concentrations of Benzo(a)anthracene and Benzo(a)pyrenemeasured at all directions, Benzo(k)flouranthene and Benzo(b)flouranthene measured at North and west and east directions, Dibenzo(a.h)anthracene measured at North and west directions and Indene(1,2,3-cd)pyrene measured at west directions are above the limit value

    Assessment of electromechanically stimulated bone marrow stem cells seeded acellular cardiac patch in a rat myocardial infarct model

    In this study, we evaluated cardiomyogenic differentiation of electromechanically stimulated rat bone marrow-derived stem cells (rt-BMSCs) on an acellular bovine pericardium (aBP) and we looked at the functioning of this engineered patch in a rat myocardial infarct (MI) model. aBP was prepared using a detergent-based decellularization procedure followed by rt-BMSCs seeding, and electrical, mechanical, or electromechanical stimulations (3 millisecond pulses of 5 V cm-1at 1 Hz, 5% stretching) to enhance cardiomyogenic differentiation. Furthermore, the electromechanically stimulated patch was applied to the MI region over 3 weeks. After this period, the retrieved patch and infarct region were evaluated for the presence of calcification, inflammatory reaction (CD68), patch to host tissue cell migration, and structural sarcomere protein expressions. In conjunction with any sign of calcification, a higher number of BrdU-labelled cells, and a low level of CD68 positive cells were observed in the infarct region under electromechanically stimulated conditions compared with static conditions. More importantly, MHC, SAC, Troponin T, and N-cad positive cells were observed in both infarct region, and retrieved engineered patch after 3 weeks. In a clear alignment with other results, our developed acellular patch promoted the expression of cardiomyogenic differentiation factors under electromechanical stimulation. Our engineered patch showed a successful integration with the host tissue followed by the cell migration to the infarct region

    Parental psychological distress associated with COVID-19 outbreak: A large-scale multicenter survey from Turkey

    Aims: Pandemics can cause substantial psychological distress; however, we do not know the impact of the COVID-19 related lockdown and mental health burden on the parents of school age children. We aimed to comparatively examine the COVID-19 related the stress and psychological burden of the parents with different occupational, locational, and mental health status related backgrounds. Methods: A large-scale multicenter online survey was completed by the parents (n = 3,278) of children aged 6 to 18 years, parents with different occupational (health care workers—HCW [18.2%] vs. others), geographical (İstanbul [38.2%] vs. others), and psychiatric (child with a mental disorder [37.8%]) backgrounds. Results: Multivariable logistic regression analysis showed that being a HCW parent (odds ratio 1.79, p <.001), a mother (odds ratio 1.67, p <.001), and a younger parent (odds ratio 0.98, p =.012); living with an adult with a chronic physical illness (odds ratio 1.38, p <.001), having an acquaintance diagnosed with COVID-19 (odds ratio 1.22, p =.043), positive psychiatric history (odds ratio 1.29, p <.001), and living with a child with moderate or high emotional distress (odds ratio 1.29, p <.001; vs. odds ratio 2.61, p <.001) were independently associated with significant parental distress. Conclusions: Parents report significant psychological distress associated with COVID-19 pandemic and further research is needed to investigate its wider impact including on the whole family unit. © The Author(s) 2020

    Effect of ploidy on growth, fillet composition and colour of large rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) in the Black Sea

    The purpose of this study was to determine the growth performance and fillet quality parameters of large rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) and of different ploidy (diploid-DTS and triploid- TTS) cultured in the Black Sea. This study was carried out in a commercial fish farm in Sinop, Black Sea of Turkey. Triploid groups had a higher weight and a better feed conversion rate than the DTS at the end of the 150-day study. Crude protein and crude fat ratios were respectively higher in the DTS and TTS groups; while ploidy affected the biochemical and fatty acid compositions of the large rainbow trout, it had no effect on the amino acid compositions. The colour of fillets was affected by the crude fat ratio of the fillet. This study indicated that large rainbow trout produced in the Black Sea, regardless of its ploidy, were of high quality, nutritious and healthy for human consumption. Furthermore, it demonstrated yet again that large rainbow trout is of sufficient quality to compete with other salmonid species in the national or international markets
