Synaptic Noise Facilitates the Emergence of Self-Organized Criticality in the Caenorhabditis elegans Neuronal Network

Avalanches with power-law distributed size parameters have been observed in neuronal networks. This observation might be a manifestation of the self-organized criticality (SOC). Yet, the physiological mechanicsm of this behavior is currently unknown. Describing synaptic noise as transmission failures mainly originating from the probabilistic nature of neurotransmitter release, this study investigates the potential of this noise as a mechanism for driving the functional architecture of the neuronal networks towards SOC. To this end, a simple finite state neuron model, with activity dependent and synapse specific failure probabilities, was built based on the known anatomical connectivity data of the nematode Ceanorhabditis elegans. Beginning from random values, it was observed that synaptic noise levels picked out a set of synapses and consequently an active subnetwork which generates power-law distributed neuronal avalanches. The findings of this study brings up the possibility that synaptic failures might be a component of physiological processes underlying SOC in neuronal networks

Holonomy reduced dynamics of triatomic molecular systems

Whereas it is easy to reduce the translational symmetry of a molecular system by using, e.g., Jacobi coordinates the situation is much more involved for the rotational symmetry. In this paper we address the latter problem using {\it holonomy reduction}. We suggest that the configuration space may be considered as the reduced holonomy bundle with a connection induced by the mechanical connection. Using the fact that for the special case of the three-body problem, the holonomy group is SO(2) (as opposed to SO(3) like in systems with more than three bodies) we obtain a holonomy reduced configuration space of topology R+3×S1 \mathbf{R}_+^3 \times S^1. The dynamics then takes place on the cotangent bundle over the holonomy reduced configuration space. On this phase space there is an S1S^1 symmetry action coming from the conserved reduced angular momentum which can be reduced using the standard symplectic reduction method. Using a theorem by Arnold it follows that the resulting symmetry reduced phase space is again a natural mechanical phase space, i.e. a cotangent bundle. This is different from what is obtained from the usual approach where symplectic reduction is used from the outset. This difference is discussed in some detail, and a connection between the reduced dynamics of a triatomic molecule and the motion of a charged particle in a magnetic field is established.Comment: 11 pages, submitted to J. Possible Single Resonant Production of the Fourth Generation Charged Leptons at γe\gamma e Colliders

Single resonant productions of the fourth standard model generation charged lepton via anomalous interactions at gamma e colliders based on future linear e^+ e^- colliders with 500 GeV and 1 TeV center of mass energies are studied. Signatures of γe4eγ\gamma e\to \ell_4\to e\gamma and γe4eZ\gamma e\to \ell_4\to eZ anomalous processes followed by the hadronic and leptonic decay of the Z boson and corresponding standard model backgrounds are discussed in details. The lowest necessary luminosities to observe these processes and the achievable values of the anomalous coupling strengths are determined.Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures, 4 table

In this study, the general descriptions of folk-tale were given and the studies on folk-tale were mentioned.Besides the folk-tale culture in Aydın,the lives of folk-tale orators, the environments of traditional folk-tales in the past, the evaluations and analysis of told folk-tales were administered. The gestures and mimics in the folk-tales were studied and the folk-tales were redesigned in summarized form.In this study, the folk-tales were studied according to folk-tale coding system and the variations of folk-tales of Aydın were established. The study, the folk-tales in Aydın,consists thirty-one folk-tales.The effects of technology and the mass-media in our life made the strongest erosion in our oral cultural units. The folk-tale environment, one of our most important cultural heritage is decaying due to technological advances. The folk-tales should be studied and evaluated as soon as possible before they have vanished. The folk-tales in Aydın were studied according to this perspective and were written down before theh have vanished from the memories

Turkey, whose population is young and dynamic, is a country where social change has a high acceleration. This circumstance has led to a spatial heterogeneity of social structure in the scale of campuses. Almost all the municipalities differ significantly from each other. In results of statistical applications, it was possible to conclude that there is a relationship between spatial differentiation of social structure indicators (PDI, PIDI) and population sizes in municipalities. This relationship also supports that there was a differentiation of graded spatial social structure among municipalities in the Turkey of 2004. It is possible to make contact with this to the spatial differentiation that moves in parallel with population size and is in transition degree from a community to a society.
