    Paper and pen: A 3D sketching system

    This paper proposes a method that resembles a natural pen and paper interface to create curve based 3D sketches. The system is particularly useful for representing initial 3D design ideas without much effort. Users interact with the system by the help of a pressure sensitive pen tablet. The input strokes of the users are projected onto a drawing plane, which serves as a paper that they can place anywhere in the 3D scene. The resulting 3D sketch is visualized emphasizing depth perception. Our evaluation involving several naive users suggest that the system is suitable for a broad range of users to easily express their ideas in 3D. We further analyze the system with the help of an architect to demonstrate the expressive capabilities. © 2013 Springer-Verlag London

    3D Hair sketching for real-time dynamic & key frame animations

    Physically based simulation of human hair is a well studied and well known problem. But the "pure" physically based representation of hair (and other animation elements) is not the only concern of the animators, who want to "control" the creation and animation phases of the content. This paper describes a sketch-based tool, with which a user can both create hair models with different styling parameters and produce animations of these created hair models using physically and key frame-based techniques. The model creation and animation production tasks are all performed with direct manipulation techniques in real-time. © 2008 Springer-Verlag

    Camera-based virtual environment interaction on mobile devices

    Mobile virtual environments, with real-time 3D and 2D graphics, are now possible on smart phone and other camera-enabled devices. Using computer vision, the camera sensor can be treated as an input modality in applications by analyzing the incoming live video. We present our tracking algorithm and several mobile virtual environment and gaming prototypes including: a 3D first person shooter, a 2D puzzle game and a simple action game. Camera-based interaction provides a user experience that is not possible through traditional means, and maximizes the use of the limited display size. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2006

    Purkinje images: Conveying different content for different luminance adaptations in a single image

    Providing multiple meanings in a single piece of art has always been intriguing to both artists and observers. We present Purkinje images, which have different interpretations depending on the luminance adaptation of the observer. Finding such images is an optimization that minimizes the sum of the distance to one reference image in photopic conditions and the distance to another reference image in scotopic conditions. To model the shift of image perception between day and night vision, we decompose the input images into a Laplacian pyramid. Distances under different observation conditions in this representation are independent between pyramid levels and pixel positions and become matrix multiplications. The optimal pixel colour can be found by inverting a small, per-pixel linear system in real time on a GPU. Finally, two user studies analyze our results in terms of the recognition performance and fidelity with respect to the reference images.
