    Get PDF
The purpose of this study is to examine the perception of online education from the perspective of students after the February 6th earthquake in Turkey. The study included 7 students from the Faculty of Sports Sciences at Ordu University. A semi-structured interview form consisting of 9 questions was prepared to determine the students' opinions regarding the online education approach after the February 6th earthquake. The data of the research were transferred to the Nvivo program and analyzed using a descriptive analysis method. The findings revealed differences between the approach to distance education after Covid-19 and the February 6th earthquake in Turkey, as well as the effectiveness of practical and theoretical lessons. Additionally, students' opinions about focusing on lessons and school after the earthquake disaster, attention diversion, and anxiety levels were identified. As a result of data analysis, it was concluded that face-to-face education would be more beneficial than online education. According to these results, while theoretical lessons could be conducted online, practical lessons should be held in a face-to-face format or in a more realistic environment. Furthermore, recommendations were made, including collaboration between the Higher Education Council and the Ministry of Youth and Sports, to enhance the effectiveness of practical lessons in the Faculty of Sports Sciences

    Get PDF
Tourists’ holiday preferences may change with changing consumption habits and various impulses, such as sensation seeking and change seeking. Therefore, this study aims to determine the effect of domestic tourists’ sensation seeking on their holiday preferences according to their level of change seeking. A questionnaire was developed based on previous literature and data were collected among domestic tourists who inhabit the Adana city center and who had holiday at least once a year. Overall, data from 1,580 respondents entered the data analysis stage. Using stepwise clustering, participants were divided into two groups: high level of change seekers and low level of change seekers. It was found that individuals who had high level of change seeking attitudes displayed more sensational seeking than individuals who had low level of change seeking. The findings also showed that people with high level of change seeking had significantly higher motivations for beach, culture and adventure holidays

    Wide-coverage parsing for Turkish

    Get PDF
Wide-coverage parsing is an area that attracts much attention in natural language processing research. This is due to the fact that it is the first step tomany other applications in natural language understanding, such as question answering. Supervised learning using human-labelled data is currently the best performing method. Therefore, there is great demand for annotated data. However, human annotation is very expensive and always, the amount of annotated data is much less than is needed to train well-performing parsers. This is the motivation behind making the best use of data available. Turkish presents a challenge both because syntactically annotated Turkish data is relatively small and Turkish is highly agglutinative, hence unusually sparse at the whole word level. METU-Sabancı Treebank is a dependency treebank of 5620 sentences with surface dependency relations and morphological analyses for words. We show that including even the crudest forms of morphological information extracted from the data boosts the performance of both generative and discriminative parsers, contrary to received opinion concerning English. We induce word-based and morpheme-based CCG grammars from Turkish dependency treebank. We use these grammars to train a state-of-the-art CCG parser that predicts long-distance dependencies in addition to the ones that other parsers are capable of predicting. We also use the correct CCG categories as simple features in a graph-based dependency parser and show that this improves the parsing results. We show that a morpheme-based CCG lexicon for Turkish is able to solve many problems such as conflicts of semantic scope, recovering long-range dependencies, and obtaining smoother statistics from the models. CCG handles linguistic phenomena i.e. local and long-range dependencies more naturally and effectively than other linguistic theories while potentially supporting semantic interpretation in parallel. Using morphological information and a morpheme-cluster based lexicon improve the performance both quantitatively and qualitatively for Turkish. We also provide an improved version of the treebank which will be released by kind permission of METU and Sabancı

The aim of this study is to determine the perception of online education from the students' perspective after the Turkey earthquake on February 6th. The study included 7 students enrolled in the Faculty of Sports Sciences at Ordu University. A semi-structured interview form (consisting of 9 questions) was prepared to determine the students' opinions regarding the concept of online education after the Turkey earthquake on February 6th. The data from the research were transferred to the Nvivo program and analyzed using descriptive analysis method. The findings revealed the students' views on the efficiency of remote education after both the Covid-19 pandemic and the Turkey earthquake on February 6th, focusing on lessons and school after the earthquake disaster, attention distractions, and anxiety levels. The analysis of the data led to the conclusion that face-to-face education would be more beneficial than online education. Accordingly, it is recommended that theoretical courses be conducted online, while practical courses should be carried out face-to-face or in a more realistic setting to ensure more effective implementation of practical courses in the Faculty of Sports Sciences. It is also suggested that the Higher Education Institution and the Ministry of Youth and Sports cooperate in this regard

An Evaluation of the Population of Trabzon in the First Years of the Republic

    Get PDF
Various factors have been effective in the formation of the population structure of Trabzon in the transition from the Ottoman Empire to the Republic. It can be seen that the population of Trabzon which was a big state before the proclamation of the Republic of Turkey has decreased owing to the narrowing of its borders as a result of the changes in administrative division. In addition, wars, migrations, political and social movements have affected the city both socioeconomically and demographically. The purpose of the study is to put forward the population development of Trabzon by taking the periodical census data dating back to the 1950’s from the early years of the Republic with its reasons and results. A statistical evaluation has been made via primary indicators such as population increase, density, rural-urban and male-female population balance and migration. In this study, official statistical datas, archival resources, annuals, newspapers and other resources were used

Involvement with backpacking: A research on backpackers visiting Istanbul

    Get PDF
The concept of "involvement" has been used to explain individuals\u27 emotional attachment to specific tourism destinations and different segment of consumers in tourism. However, involvement with backpacking among backpackers has not been examined. A survey was conducted in Istanbul, one of the world\u27s largest tourist destinations. Data was collected through a questionnaire during April 2012 with 887 backpackers who stayed in hostels in Istanbul. Factor analysis showed that involvement with backpacking can be examined in four dimensions: attraction, centrality to life style, social bonding, and identity expression and affirmation. Significant differences were also found in involvement with backpacking according to age, self-definition, travel experience and number of information sources used. Our findings demonstrate that Turkey is more preferred by European backpackers at the beginning of their travel career, thus supporting the importance of the Pearce\u27s (1993) Travel Career Ladder in tourism research

    Get PDF
Importance: Schizophrenia and major depressive disorder (MDD) are associated with increased risks of immunologic disease and metabolic syndrome. It is unclear to what extent growth, immune or glucose dysregulations are similarly present in these disorders without the influence of treatment or chronicity. Objective: To conduct a meta-analysis investigating whether there are altered peripheral growth, immune or glucose metabolism compounds in drug-naïve first-episode patients with schizophrenia or MDD compared with controls. Data sources and study selection: Case-control studies reporting compound measures in drug-naïve first-episode patients with schizophrenia or MDD compared with controls in the Embase, PubMed and PsycINFO databases. Data extraction and synthesis: Two independent authors extracted data for a random-effects meta-analysis. Main outcomes and measures: Peripheral growth, immune or glucose metabolism compounds in schizophrenia or MDD compared with controls. Standardized mean differences were quantified with Hedges’ g (g). Results: 74 studies were retrieved comprising 3453 drug-naïve first-episode schizophrenia patients and 4152 controls, and 29 studies were retrieved comprising 1095 drug-naïve first-episode MDD patients and 1399 controls. Growth factors: brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) (g = -0.77, P < .001) and nerve growth factor (NGF) (g = -2.51, P = .03) were decreased in schizophrenia. For MDD, we observed a trend toward decreased BDNF (g = −0.47, P = .19) and NGF (g = −0.33, P = .08) levels, and elevated vascular endothelial growth factor levels (g = 0.40, P = .03). Immune factors: interleukin (IL)-6 (g = 0.95, P < .001), IL-8 (g = 0.59, P = .001) and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFα) (g = 0.48, P = .002) were elevated in schizophrenia. For C-reactive protein (CRP) (g = 0.57, P = .09), IL-4 (g = 0.44, P = .10) and interferon gamma (g = 0.33, P = .11) we observed a trend toward elevated levels in schizophrenia. In MDD, IL-6 (g = 0.62, P = .007), TNFα (g = 1.21, P < .001), CRP (g = 0.53, P < .001), IL-1β (g = 1.52, P = .009) and IL-2 (g = 4.41, P = .04) were elevated, whereas IL-8 (g = −0.84, P = .01) was decreased. The fasting glucose metabolism factors glucose (g = 0.24, P = .003) and insulin (g = 0.38, P = .003) were elevated in schizophrenia. Conclusions and relevance: Both schizophrenia and MDD show alterations in growth and immune factors from disease onset. An altered glucose metabolism seems to be present from onset in schizophrenia. These findings support efforts for further research into transdiagnostic preventive strategies and augmentation therapy for those with immune or metabolic dysfunctions

Couchsurfing involvement in non-profit peer-to-peer accommodations and its impact on destination image, familiarity, and behavioral intentions

    Get PDF
Accommodation is a fundamental part of tourism, and it plays an important role in the tourist experience. The emerging economy and especially the peer-to-peer accommodations (P2P) have shaken up the conventional accommodations sector. While most P2P accommodation studies have focused on the monetary platform, which includes Airbnb, there is little knowledge about the linkages of involvement and behavioral intentions on the non-profit accommodation users. This empirical study applied a multiple-methods approach to investigate the positive impacts of involvement on couchsurfing, such as P2P accommodations on the destination image, familiarity, and the behavioral intentions. The data was collected from 609 travelers who have used couchsurfing while traveling to Turkey from 2016 to 2017. The results revealed that involvement in couchsurfing improved the destination image, familiarity, the E-WoM, and the revisit intention of couchsurfers. This study also discusses the practical implications

Cross-sectional association between metabolic parameters and psychotic-like experiences in a population-based sample of middle-aged and elderly individuals

    Get PDF
Background: Metabolic alterations are often found in patients with clinical psychosis early in the course of the disorder. Psychotic-like experiences are observed in the general population, but it is unclear whether these are associated with markers of metabolism. Methods: A population-based cohort of 1890 individuals (mean age 58.0 years; 56.3% women) was included. Metabolic parameters were measured by body-mass index (BMI), concentrations of low-density and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C and HDL-C), total cholesterol, triglycerides, and fasting glucose and insulin in blood. Frequency and distress ratings of psychotic-like experiences from the positive symptom dimension of the Community Assessment of Psychic Experience questionnaire were assessed. Cross-sectional associations were analysed using linear regression analyses. Results: Higher BMI was associated with higher frequency of psychotic-like experiences (adjusted mean difference: 0.04, 95% CI 0.02–0.06) and more distress (adjusted mean difference: 0.02, 95% CI 0.01–0.03). Lower LDL-C was associated with more psychotic-like experiences (adjusted mean difference: −0.23, 95% CI −0.40 to −0.06). When restricting the sample to those not using lipid-lowering medication, the results of BMI and LDL-C remained and an association between lower HDL-C and higher frequency of psychotic-like experiences was found (adjusted mean difference: −0.37, 95% CI −0.69 to −0.05). We observed no significant associations between cholesterol, triglycerides, glucose, insulin or homeostatic model assessment and psychotic-like experiences. Conclusions: In a population-based sample of middle-aged and elderly individuals, higher BMI and lower LDL-C were associated with psychotic-like experiences. This suggests that metabolic markers are associated with psychotic-like experiences across the vulnerability spectrum.</p
