    Gaseous ozone application on microbial properties of broiler feeds

    Ozone is generally used for preservation and disinfection in many different areas, especially in the food, chemical industry, and health sector due to decompose into oxygen and leave no residue. In this study, the impacts of ozone application on the microbiological of commercially produced broiler feeds were investigated. For this purpose, Aspergillus niger NRRL 326 was introduced into the starter, grower, and finisher diets. Then the effects of gaseous ozone application at different doses (0.9 and 5.6 g h?1) and durations (15 and 30 min) were investigated. A. niger and total mould-yeast numbers were decreased in the feed samples as a result of the ozone application and statistically, a significant difference was found (p <.05). In this study, ozone dose, duration, and their interactions were found to be effective on the decrease of mould-yeast counts in all treated broiler feeds. However, the effect of ozone was higher on pelleted form feeds (grower and finisher). It might be concluded that the disinfection properties of ozone can change according to the physical and chemical structure of feed material and the surface area which contact with ozone.Highlights Ozone application can result in a moderate reduction in A. niger and total mould-yeast counts The most reduction on microbial load was observed in the feed applicated with 5.6 g h?1 gaseous ozone for 30 min.     A novel study on bean common mosaic virus accumulation shows disease resistance at the initial stage of infection in Phaseolus vulgaris

    Accurate and early diagnosis of bean common mosaic virus (BCMV) in Phaseolus vulgaris tissues is critical since the pathogen can spread easily and have long-term detrimental effects on bean production. The use of resistant varieties is a key factor in the management activities of BCMV. The study reported here describes the development and application of a novel SYBR Green-based quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR) assay targeting the coat protein gene to determine the host sensitivity to the specific NL-4 strain of BCMV. The technique showed high specificity, validated by melting curve analysis, without cross-reaction. Further, the symptoms development of twenty advanced common bean genotypes after mechanical BCMV-NL-4 infection was evaluated and compared. The results showed that common bean genotypes exhibit varying levels of host susceptibility to this BCMV strain. The YLV-14 and BRS-22 genotypes were determined as the most resistant and susceptible genotypes, respectively, in terms of aggressiveness of symptoms. The accumulation of BCMV was analyzed in the resistant and susceptible genotypes 3, 6, and 9 days following the inoculation by the newly developed qRT-PCR. The mean cycle threshold (Ct) values showed that the viral titer was significantly lower in YLV-14, which was evident in both root and leaf 3 days after the inoculation. The qRT-PCR thus facilitated an accurate, specific, and feasible assessment of BCMV accumulation in bean tissues even in low virus titers, allowing novel clues in selecting resistant genotypes in the early stages of infection, which is critical for disease management.     Due to the lack of effective medical treatment for non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), we aimed to evaluate new treatment options. In particular, our goal was to investigate and compare the effects of N-acetylcysteine (NAC) and Adalimumab treatment on tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) and oxidative stress during the development of NASH in a rat model of the disease. Our study included a total of 35 female Wistar albino rats that were divided into 5 groups of 7 each, and evaluated over a 6 week period. One group received a normal diet, while the other four groups received a methionine and choline deficient (MCD) diet. One of the groups receiving the MCD diet did not take any medicine, while the other three were administered NAC, adalimumab, or a NAC/adalimumab combination therapy. NASH was successfully established in the MCD diet group. Levels of TNF-α were effectively suppressed in the three groups that received therapy. Even though adalimumab significantly enhanced suppression of TNF-α, the NASH score was suppressed to a more statistically significant extent in the groups receiving NAC. Our study showed that TNF-α and oxidative stress play an important role in NASH pathogenesis. The antioxidant agent, NAC, was found to be superior to the anti-TNF agent, Adalimumab, in the improvement of total NASH score. Although these drugs did not prevent the development of NASH, it was shown that they mildly reverse the NASH histopathology score, suggesting improvement of and overall liver function
