Changing patterns of global-scale vegetation photosynthesis, 1982-1999

    Get PDF
The primary objective of this research was to assess changes in global vegetation photosynthesis between 1982 and 1999. Global-scale Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) data from the Pathfinder AVHRR Land (PAL) and Global Inventory Modeling and Mapping Studies (GIMMS) datasets were analysed for 96% of the non-Antarctic land area of the Earth. The results showed that between 1982 and 1999 over 30% of the Earth's land surface increased and less than 5% decreased in annual average photosynthesis greater than 4%. Although both the PAL and GIMMS datasets produced broadly similar patterns of change, there were distinct differences between the two datasets. Changes in vegetation photosynthesis were occurring in spatial clusters across the globe and were being driven by climate change, El Nino-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) events and human activity

Preference programming and inconsistent interval matrices

The problem of derivation of the weights of altematives from pairwise comparison matrices is long standing. In this paper,Lexicographic Goal Programming (LGP) has been used to find out weights from pairwise inconsistent interval judgment matrices. A number of properties and advantages of LGP as a weight determination technique have been explored. An algorithm for identification and modification of inconsistent bounds is also provided. The proposed technique has been illustrated by means of numerical examples.Analytic hierarchy process; Interval judgment; Preferente programming

Malignant Melanoma of Nose and Paranasal Sinuses: 2 Case Reports

    Get PDF
Malignant melanoma is one of the rare and highly aggressive diseases of the sinonasal cavity. High index of suspicion is required for diagnosis as the patient usually presents with non specific signs and symptoms. In the natural course of the disease, higher rate of loco regional recurrences and distant metastasis are seen making the overall prognosis of disease very poor. In reviewing the various treatment modalities used in the past, surgical resection of the tumour with postoperative radiotherapy is preferred one. Advances in surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy don’t have any impact on improved survival, which remains poor in this disease. We report two cases of malignant melanoma, which were treated at our institute

Holographic phase transition from dyons in an AdS black hole background

    Get PDF
We construct a dyon solution for a Yang-Mills-Higgs theory in a 4 dimensional Schwarzschild-anti-de Sitter black hole background with temperature T. We then apply the AdS/CFT correspondence to describe the strong coupling regime of a 2+1 quantum field theory which undergoes a phase transition exhibiting the condensation of a composite charge operator below a critical temperature TcT_c.Comment: 19 pages, 7 figures. Climate change, security, and the resource nexus: Case study of Northern Nigeria and lake Chad

    Get PDF
This paper analyses the impacts of climate change and its implications for human security for the regions of Northern Nigeria and Lake Chad. The introduction identifies a gap between evidence on global environmental change and interactions on the ground; it positions the scope for a deeper understanding of the climate–security–resource nexus in Northern Nigeria and Lake Chad and consequences for the implementation of SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals). The section on methods describes the nexus concept and justifies adopting it. As a result of analysing the region, the paper sheds light on the conflict pathways triggered by failures in land grazing policy, which is further evidenced by a short comparison with Northern Kenya. A potentially novel contribution is discussed in terms of scaling up collaboration and green markets for the future of Lake Chad, along with an integrated agricultural nexus policy, both of which are ambitious in the spirit of mission-oriented policies and delivering on the SDGs

Analytic study of properties of holographic p-wave superconductors

In this paper, we analytically investigate the properties of p-wave holographic superconductors in AdS4AdS_{4}-Schwarzschild background by two approaches, one based on the Sturm-Liouville eigenvalue problem and the other based on the matching of the solutions to the field equations near the horizon and near the asymptotic AdSAdS region. The relation between the critical temperature and the charge density has been obtained and the dependence of the expectation value of the condensation operator on the temperature has been found. Our results are in very good agreement with the existing numerical results. The critical exponent of the condensation also comes out to be 1/2 which is the universal value in the mean field theory.Comment: Latex, To appear in JHE

AN EMPIRICAL STUDY OF THE RELEVANCE OF ACCOUNTING INFORMATION ON INVESTORS DECISIONS

    Get PDF
Recent empirical work has suggested that Accounting Information (AI) have lost their relevance to investors significantly over the past few decades. AI contained in financial statements to be accurate and transparent enough to provide an indication of a business performance and financial condition to decision makers including investors. According to the present empirical evidence, investors tend to focus on information other than the published accounting information such as non financial information, short term capital gains and tend to be speculative or irrational for unusual events. Therefore, this study attempts to addresses the relevance of AI on investor?s stock market decisions in Commercial Banks registered under Colombo Stock Exchange (CSE) in Sri Lanka. The relevance of accounting data was measured by correlation coefficient between Market Price per Share (MPS) and selected accounting information such as Earning per Share (EPS), Return on Equity (ROE) and Earning Yield (EY). The data analysis was based on the AI in the published financial statements of Commercial banks registered under CSE. It covers a period of 5 years from 2006 to 2009. According to the findings there is a relationship between Accounting Information and Market Price per Share. Further it revealed that investors still consider Accounting Information which contain in the published financial statements of Commercial Banks registered under CSE for the stock market decisions in Sri Lanka.fals

Uniqueness and nonuniqueness of the stationary black holes in 5D Einstein-Maxwell and Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton gravity

In the present paper we investigate the general problem of uniqueness of the stationary black solutions in 5D Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton gravity with arbitrary dilaton coupling parameter containing the Einstein-Maxwell gravity as a particular case. We formulate and prove uniqueness theorems classifying the stationary black hole solutions in terms of their interval structure, electric and magnetic charges and the magnetic fluxes. The proofs are based on the nonpositivity of the Riemann curvature operator on the space of the potentials which imposes restrictions on the dilaton coupling parameter.Comment: 21 pages, LaTe
