    Reassessing Intergenerational Mobility in Germany and the United States: The Impact of Differences in Lifecycle Earnings Patterns

    Using longitudinal data on fathers and their children, this study compares the extent of intergenerational mobility in Germany and the United States and introduces an estimation strategy that corrects estimates of intergenerational earnings elasticities for a possible lifecycle bias. In contrast to previous studies, we find that the extent of intergenerational mobility is more limited in the US than in Germany. Furthermore, while the errors-in-variables problems have been dealt with extensively in the literature, the inconsistencies in standard mobility measures due to lifecycle effects have attracted much less attention. The present paper proposes an estimation method that corrects for such inconsistencies.     In this paper, we analyse differences in the cyclical pattern of employment and wages of immigrants and natives for two large immigrant receiving countries, Germany and the UK. We show that, despite large differences in their immigrant populations, there are similar and significant differences in cyclical responses between immigrants and natives in both countries, even conditional on education, age, and location. We decompose changes in outcomes into a secular trend and a business cycle component. We find significantly larger unemployment responses to economic shocks for low-skilled workers relative to high-skilled workers and for immigrants relative to natives within the same skill group. There is little evidence for differential wage responses to economic shocks. We offer three explanations for these findings: an equilibrium search model, where immigrants experience higher job separation rates, a model of dual labour markets, and differences in the complementarity of immigrants and natives to capital.immigration, unemployment, business cycle

    New thermodynamic activity-based approach allows predicting the feasibility of glycolysis

    Thermodynamic feasibility analyses help evaluating the feasibility of metabolic pathways. This is an important information used to develop new biotechnological processes and to understand metabolic processes in cells. However, literature standard data are uncertain for most biochemical reactions yielding wrong statements concerning their feasibility. In this article we present activity-based equilibrium constants for all the ten glycolytic reactions, accompanied by the standard reaction data (standard Gibbs energy of reaction and standard enthalpy of reaction). We further developed a thermodynamic activity-based approach that allows to correctly determine the feasibility of glycolysis under different chosen conditions. The results show for the first time that the feasibility of glycolysis can be explained by thermodynamics only if (1) correct standard data are used and if (2) the conditions in the cell at non-equilibrium states are accounted for in the analyses. The results here will help to determine the feasibility of other metabolisms and to understand metabolic processes in cells in the future

    Long-lasting cross-protection against influenza A by neuraminidase and M2e-based immunization strategies

    There is mounting evidence that in the absence of neutralizing antibodies cross-reactive T cells provide protection against pandemic influenza viruses. Here, we compared protection and CD8+ T cell responses following challenge with H1N1 2009 pandemic and H3N2 viruses of mice that had been immunized with hemagglutinin (HA), neuraminidase (NA) and the extracellular domain of matrix protein 2 (M2e) fused to a virus-like particle (VLP). Mice were challenged a first time with a sublethal dose of H1N1 2009 pandemic virus and, four weeks later, challenged again with an H3N2 virus. Mice that had been vaccinated with HA, NA, NA + M2e-VLP and HA + NA + M2e-VLP were protected against homologous H1N1 virus challenge. Challenged NA and NA + M2e-VLP vaccinated mice mounted CD8+ T cell responses that correlated with protection against secondary H3N2 challenge. HA-vaccinated mice were fully protected against challenge with homologous H1N1 2009 virus, failed to mount cross-reactive CD8+ T cells and succumbed to the second challenge with heterologous H3N2 virus. In summary, NA- and M2e-based immunity can protect against challenge with (homologous) virus without compromising the induction of robust cross-reactive CD8+ T cell responses upon exposure to virus

    A general purpose HyperTransport-based Application Accelerator Framework

    HyperTransport provides a flexible, low latency and high bandwidth interconnection between processors and also between processors and peripheral omponents. Therefore, the interconnection is no longer a performance bottleneck when integrating application specific accelerators in modern computing systems. Current FPGAs providing huge computational power and permit the acceleration of compute-intensive kernels. We therefore present a general purpose architecture based on HyperTransport and modern FPGAs to accelerate time-consuming computations. Further, we present a prototypical implementation of our architecture. Here we used an AMD Opteron-based system with the HTX Board [6] to demonstrate that common applications can benefit from available hardware accelerators. A cryptographic example showed that the encryption of files, larger then 50 kByte, can be successfully accelerated

    Placenta Percreta Presents with Neoangiogenesis of Arteries with Von Willebrand Factor-Negative Endothelium

    In placenta percreta cases, large vessels are present on the precrete surface area. As these vessels are not found in normal placentation, we examined their histological structure for features that might explain the pathogenesis of neoangiogenesis induced by placenta accreta spectrum disorders (PAS). In two patients with placenta percreta (FIGO grade 3a) of the anterior uterine wall, one strikingly large vessel of 2 cm length was excised. The samples were formalin fixed and paraffin-embedded. Gomori trichrome staining was used to evaluate the muscular layers and Weigert-Van Gieson staining for elastic fibers. Immunohistochemical staining of the vessel endothelium was performed for Von Willebrand factor (VWF), platelet endothelial cell adhesion molecule (CD31), Ephrin B2, and EPH receptor B4. The structure of the vessel walls appeared artery-like. The vessel of patient one further exhibited an unorderly muscular layer and a lack of elastic laminae, whereas these features appeared normal in the vessel of the other patient. The endothelium of both vessels stained VWF-negative and CD31-positive. In conclusion, this study showed VWF-negative vessel endothelia of epiplacental arteries in placenta accreta spectrum. VWF is known to regulate artery formation, as the absence of VWF has been shown to cause enhanced vascularization. Therefore, we suppose that PAS provokes increased vascularization through suppression of VWF. This process might be associated with the immature vessel architecture as found in one of the vessels and Ephrin B2 and EPH receptor B4 negativity of both artery-like vessels. The underlying pathomechanism needs to be evaluated in a greater set of patients

    Technical Challenges of a Mobile Application Supporting Intersession Processes in Psychotherapy

    The usage of mobile applications in healthcare is gaining popularity in recent years. The ubiquity of a sophisticated mobile appliance that is applicable to sample ecological patient data in real life by acquiring both mental state and environmental data has enabled new possibilities for researchers and healthcare providers. Collecting data using the mentioned approach is often called Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA) and is characterized by an unidirectional data flow towards the platform provider. A more challenging approach, in turn, is called Ecological Momentary Intervention (EMI). The latter requires a bidirectional data flow in order to enable the possibility of sending feedback to the patients and controlling their experiences through interventions. Although both approaches are established parts of IT-supported treatments in the field of psychology and psychotherapy until now, the so-called intersession process has not been technically supported appropriately yet. Therefore, the Intersession-Online platform was developed in order to (a) assess intersession processes systematically, (b) monitor a patient, and (c) intervene by suppressing negative thoughts concerning the therapy. In this paper, the technical requirements, architecture, and features of the mobile application of the Intersession-Online platform are presented. In this context, the development of a patient data sampling mechanism, which consists of a sophisticated, inter-questionnaire dependent sampling schedule and synchronization strategy is particularly illustrated and discussed. Altogether, the technical challenges will show that a mobile application supporting intersession processes in psychotherapy is an endeavor which requires many considerations. However, on the other, such a mobile application may be the basis for new technical as well as psychological insights
