    Re-employment Probabilities and Wage Offer Function for Russian Labor Market

    This research addresses labor market transformation in Russia. It elaborates on the theory of job search and focuses on the following issues: (1) evaluation of the re-employment probabilities (hazard rates) for different socio-economic groups; and (2) estimation of wage offer distribution for the transforming labor market. We use data from Phase II of the Russia Longitudinal Monitoring Survey (RLMS) to estimate the employment and wage offer functions for Russian workers who found a job after having been unemployed. We take into account the effectiveness of search strategies used and correct for truncation in wage offers. The binomial logit-OLS estimation method with sample selection bias correction on pooled data from Rounds 5-9 of RLMS is used. The factors considered are sex, education, experience, sector of employment and search methods’ success rate, which are hypothesized to capture the main determinants of job search behavior. The results show that individual characteristics, as well as the search method used, play a decisive role in the re-employment prospects of the unemployed. The private sector employment level is estimated to have the most powerful positive effect on the wage offer function. Russian women are less likely than men to find a job after being unemployed, and wage offers for women are estimated to be lower than for men.http://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/39932/3/wp547.pd

    Hydrolysis of raw fish proteins extracts by Carnobacterium maltaromaticum strains isolated from Argentinean freshwater fish

    Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) isolated from freshwater fish (hatcheries and captures) from Paraná river (Argentina) were analyzed by using culture-dependent approaches. The species belonging to Carnobacterium (C.) divergens, C. inhibens, C. maltaromaticum, C. viridans and Vagococcus (V.) salmoninarum were identify as predominant by RAPD-PCR and 16 s rRNA gene sequencing. C. maltaromaticum (H-17, S-30, B-42 and S-44) grew in raw fish extract and slightly reduced the medium pH (5.81–5.91). These strains exhibited moderate fish sarcoplasmic protein degradation (≤ 73 %) releasing small peptides and free amino acids, being alanine, glycine, asparagine and arginine concentrations increased in a higher extent (17.84, 1.47, 1.26 and 0.47 mg/100 mL, respectively) by S-44 strain at 96 h incubation. Interestingly C. maltaromaticum H-17 was able to inhibit Listeria monocytogenes. Results suggest that these strains would contribute to the development of new safe and healthy fishery products with improved nutritional and sensory characteristics.Fil: Dallagnol, Andrea Micaela.     Daniel is walking to Luke’s house as Luke\u27s mom gives the keys to her 1980s pink Cadillac to Luke. Luke is opposed to driving the Cadillac; however, Daniel is completely for it. Luke reluctantly takes the keys, drives away, hides the car, and walks to school. Rusty, the bully, approaches the boys, and banter starts. Angered, Luke starts to throw a punch. The duo ends up in the principal’s office. Mrs. Francois lightly scolds the boys, but they all leave with smiles. Logan, running for class president, smooth-talks students into voting for him. However, Luke thinks he\u27s up to something. After school, Daniel and Luke start walking home. In the background, Logan and Rusty shake hands. They walk over to eavesdrop behind the fence; it seems as if Logan is blackmailing Rusty. After Logan leaves, Rusty picks up his backpack and throws it against the fence which falls and reveals the duo. Rusty\u27s furious about them spying on him and charges Luke and Daniel who run for their lives. They escape.     Introduction to the special issue : civil society in Ukraine : building on Euromaidan legacy

    The idea of this Special Issue appeared in early 2014, when the heat of the fire on Kyiv’s Independence Square had not fully cooled down and when many civic activists and newborn volunteers had turned their ceaseless energy to yet another fire first in Crimea and then in Eastern Ukraine. The events that seemingly put the state of Ukraine on the brink of its very existence were evolving too fast, but civil society’s response to them was no less prompt and adaptive. Volunteers and activists were trying on new roles each day as they were helping those escaping persecution, repression and hostilities, equipping and maintaining those who fought with weapons or joining their ranks, developing reform agenda and drafting legislative proposals. What seemed astounding back then, and still does today, was how those thousands of volunteers and millions of “ordinary citizens” who mobilized to support new civic initiatives took over the functions of the weak and nearly collapsed state eroded by corruption, nepotism, the neglect of its citizens and of the country’s national interests. Challenging a post-Soviet monster disguised behind the mask of electoral democracy and market economy, citizens were bringing in a new social contract based on trust and solidarity on which a new state could be built. The speed of events and the scale of civil society engagement precluded any long-term comprehensive analysis, yet researchers’ zeal to reflect upon what looked as a tectonic move in Ukraine’s political and social development took over. At first, our idea was to co-author an article examining civil society’s role in a post-Euromaidan Ukraine, but soon enough the task became too big. The initial idea thus evolved into producing an edited volume with different authors looking into their respective fields of civil society in Ukraine in order to grasp at least a small portion of change. We are grateful to many researchers in Ukraine and abroad who responded to our call for papers in May 2016 and who contributed their ideas to this Special Issue. Some of these ideas eventually turned into articles and we would like to give special thanks to those colleagues who bore with us through rounds of revisions till the very end of this journey. Their articles made this Special Issue happen. We are also grateful to the Kyiv-Mohyla Law and Politics Journal for hosting this Special Issue and for supporting our initiative from the early stages through review and editing to the publication process.     Sorption Water By Modified Bentonite

    In order to improve adsorptive properties and provide a viable alternative to humidity control techniques, the desiccants can be modified with chemical aggregates such as calcium chloride (CaCl2), the latter often used as dehydrating due to its hygroscopicity and low cost. Its use as a drying agent has disadvantages because of its particles form a liquid film. However, the CaCl2 may be mixed with other materials for preparing desiccant products. In this work we studied, at 298 K and different relative humidities (RH), the adsorption processes of desiccants mixtures composed of a bentonite clay Argentinian and CaCl2. The results showed a better performance of the desiccant mixture with respect to natural clay in the whole HR working range. It was also observed that addition of CaCl2 favors adsorptive properties with respect to a purification treatment.Fil: Castrillo, Natalia Paola.     Effective estimates on the top Lyapunov exponent for random matrix products

    We study the top Lyapunov exponents of random products of positive 2×22 \times 2 matrices and obtain an efficient algorithm for its computation. As in the earlier work of Pollicott, the algorithm is based on the Fredholm theory of determinants of trace-class linear operators. In this article we obtain a simpler expression for the approximations which only require calculation of the eigenvalues of finite matrix products and not the eigenvectors. Moreover, we obtain effective bounds on the error term in terms of two explicit constants: a constant which describes how far the set of matrices are from all being column stochastic, and a constant which measures the minimal amount of projective contraction of the positive quadrant under the action of the matrices.Comment: Updated definition of constant r, updated examples section, new section on scope for generalising results to higher dimensions, proof of lemma 2.1 correcte
