    Representations of the fin-de-siècle literary salon in the chronicles of Matilde Serao

    This article looks into the representations of the Italian literary salon in the print press during the 1880’s. Special attention is given to Matilde Serao’s mediation in the private as well as in the public sphere and to her double role as salon chronicler and salon attendee. Her views with regard to the artistic and political landscape of fin-de-siècle Italy are examined through a series of chronicles on Pasquale Mancini, Baroness Magliani, Francesco De Renzis, and the salon of the literary magazine Capitan Fracassa. The representations of these salons in the fortnightly periodical Cronaca Bizantina (Rome, 1881-1886) as well as in the daily newspaper Corriere di Roma (1883-1886) offered a new reading experience to a wide audience and encouraged the creation of an imagined community of salon attendees. Thus, salon participation is studied through the prism of the periodical press, which interpreted salon life as a meaningful collective experience and a decisive factor in the formation of culture. Serao’s chronicle is also viewed as an instrument of social critique, which raised questions on the rapid expansion of mass media, the growing demand for human progress, the withering away of politics, and the growing importance of art as a means of personal expression

    Self-assembled metallic nanoparticle template --- a new approach of surface nanostructuring at nanometer scale

    In the present work, the formation of silver and copper nanostructures on highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) modified with self-assembled gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) is demonstrated. Surface patterning with nanometer resolution was achieved. Different methods such as field emission scanning electron microscopy (FEGSEM), energy dispersive spectrometry (EDS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were used to illustrate a selective deposition of silver and copper on Au NPs. The mechanism of silver and copper ions reduction on Au NP with nn-dodecanethiol coating is discussed.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figure

    Multiparticle Biased DLA with surface diffusion: a comprehensive model of electrodeposition

    We present a complete study of the Multiparticle Biased Diffusion-Limited Aggregation (MBDLA) model supplemented with surface difussion (SD), focusing on the relevance and effects of the latter transport mechanism. By comparing different algorithms, we show that MBDLA+SD is a very good qualitative model for electrodeposition in practically all the range of current intensities {\em provided} one introduces SD in the model in the proper fashion: We have found that the correct procedure involves simultaneous bulk diffusion and SD, introducing a time scale arising from the ratio of the rates of both processes. We discuss in detail the different morphologies obtained and compare them to the available experimental data with very satisfactory results. We also characterize the aggregates thus obtained by means of the dynamic scaling exponents of the interface height, allowing us to distinguish several regimes in the mentioned interface growth. Our asymptotic scaling exponents are again in good agreement with recent experiments. We conclude by discussing a global picture of the influence and consequences of SD in electrodeposition.Comment: 15 pages, 20 figures, accepted for publication in Physical Review

    Kinetics and growth modes of quasi-2d silver branched electrodeposits produced in the presence of a supporting electrolyte

    Quasi-2d silver electrodeposits were grown electrochemically at constant potential from aqueous Ag+ ion-containing solutions in the presence of a supporting electrolyte, at room temperature, using a three-electrode quasi-2d circular electrochemical cell. Open branching and dense radial branching patterns were distinguished on the centimetre scale, and growth mode transitions could be observed during the process. Branching patterns exhibited a mass fractal behaviour with a mass fractal dimension increasing from that expected for a DLA-like pattern to that of a dense branching pattern as either the cathodic overpotential (ηc) or the Ag+ ion concentration in the solution (c) was increased. The electrodeposition current increased with time exhibiting different regimes depending on whether an open branching or a dense radial branching growth mode prevailed. When the electrodeposition time exceeded a certain critical value, the radial growth rate of electrodeposits (vr) approached a vr α ηcc relationship. The experimental morphologies and growth kinetics were reproduced by Monte Carlo simulations of a growth model in which depositing particles follow a biased random walk.Instituto de Investigaciones Fisicoquímicas Teóricas y Aplicada

    Optimal design of drip irrigation submains: presure-compensating emitters

    For a drip irrigation system to be successful, it must he well designed, properly installed, managed and maintained. In plots with steep slopes and irregular topography that have little land leveling capacity and/or that require very efficient agricultural machinery, drip irrigation designs generally use pressure-compensating emitters. This work develops a methodology and implements it in a computer tool that makes it possible to optimally determine in drip-irrigated plots with pressure-compensating emitters: a) telescopic sizing of the submain manifold pipe, b) supply valve pressure and c) subunit''s intake valve location, when considering all hydraulic-economic aspects in the design phase. Techniques of optimal sizing of pipe networks and simulation of hydraulic networks under pressure are linked to economic analyzes of total annualized costs. Finally, the practical usefulness of the proposed methodology is shown with three examples of complex real cases where pipe design costs are reduced by 16-34% and energy costs by 37-51%

    The electrochemical stability of thiols on gold surfaces

    In this paper we present a comparative analysis of the electrochemical stability of alkanethiols, aromatic and heterocyclic thiols on the Au(111) and Au(100) faces in relation to the theoretical energetic data. The peak potential and surface coverage are used as the key parameters to estimate the electrochemical stability while work function changes, adsorption energies and surface free energies calculated from periodic DFT, including van der Waals interactions, are used for the theoretical estimation. We find that the peak potentials do not correlate with work function changes and adsorption energies in particular for aromatic and heterocyclic thiols. In contrast, the reductive desorption potentials for the different thiols show a good correlation with the surface free energy of the SAMs estimated by density functional theory calculations.     Evolution of the Growth Front for Copper Electrodeposition Followed by Real Time Imaging

    The interface motion for Cu electrodeposition in additive-free and thiourea-containing acid plating baths using three-dimensional and quasi-two-dimensional electrochemical cells was followed in real time in the potential range where the kinetics of the reaction is dominated by activation and Ohmic overpotentials. In the additive-free plating bath the growing interface changes from a marginally stable (nodular) to an unstable (branched) regime as the activation overpotential/Ohmic overpotential ratio decreases. The presence of thiourea drives the interface motion to a steady-state regime in which the predictions of the Edwards−Wilkinson equation for the interface motion are obeyed. The influence of thiourea on Cu electrodeposition is to slow the growth rate at protrusions and to increase the growth rate at flat surface domains or valleys, leading to a smoothing of the entire growing electrodeposit surface.Instituto de Investigaciones Fisicoquímicas Teóricas y Aplicada

    Electroformation of quasi-two-dimensional silver patterns in the absence of supporting electrolyte

    Quasi-two-dimensional (2D) growth patterns of silver electrodeposits obtained from aqueous silver sulfate solution in the absence of supporting electrolyte using a quasi-2D cylindrical cell involve domains with morphologies covering from dense to needle-like branching. The prevailing morphology depends on the electrolyte concentration, applied electric potential and electrolysis time. From the time dependence of the maximum radius circumscribing each electrodeposit, its dimension was obtained. The growth of the solid phase was also analysed in terms of dimensionless numbers to estimate the ionic mass-transfer contributions to the electrochemical process. For a single-growing branch the axial-to-radial growth velocity is close to 10. Phenomena promoting silver electrodeposits with irregular edges and an open structure compete with others operating in the opposite direction. These phenomena are influenced by changes in the concentration and electric potential field around the growing electrodeposit.Instituto de Investigaciones Fisicoquímicas Teóricas y Aplicada
