Struthers Burt
If the pen is mightier than the sword, Maxwell Struthers Burt was a stalwart warrior. Poet, essayist, novelist, short story writer, librettist, reviewer, author of a literary manifesto, contributor to letter-to-the-editor columns, and personal letter writer, Burt seems never to have stopped writing over a career of a half-century. His principal publisher was Charles Scribnerâs Sons, which, under the editorial leadership of Maxwell Perkins, published the work of Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Thomas Wolfe, and a variety of other respected writers. Burtâs articles, essays, poems, and stories appeared in many of the most successful magazines in America: Scribner\u27s Magazine, The Saturday Evening Post, The Red Book Magazine, Ladiesâ Home Journal, and The North American Review. He wrote scores of reviews for such publications as The Saturday Review of Literature, the New York Times, and the Philadelphia Record. Untiringly, Burt sent his views to the editors of far-flung newspapers: the Jackson\u27s Hole Courier, the St. Petersburg Times, the Princeton Alumni Weekly, and the New York Herald Tribune. The âMost Unforgettable Characterâ he had ever met. an old-time cowboy named Cal Carrington, was the subject of Burtâs article in The Readerâs Digest. When totalitarianism threatened the writersâ freedom in 1941, Burt wrote and circulated the American Authorsâ Manifesto, which was signed by one hundred writers, including E. B. White, Frank Waters, Floyd Dell, and Max Lerner. The Best Short Stories of 1915 honored Burtâs âThe Water-Hole,â and his fine story âEach in His Generationâ won first prize in the 0. Henry Memorial Award competition in 1920. Respected, frequently praised, and widely read in the 1920s and 1930s, Burt, the stalwart warrior, is today a forgotten soldier
Assessing Brazilâs information diffusion power: a structural hole approach
The objective of this article is to verify the sectorsâ capacity to diffuse information and knowledge in the Brazilian economy between 2010 and 2015. The input-output technique is used with contributions in network theory and the Structural hole concept, developed by Burt (1992). The results indicate a relevant capacity to diffuse information and knowledge in the economy. This capacity declined in this period. There is a small decline in the diffusion power of the manufacturing and non-manufacturing sectors between the years 2010 and 2015.
Assessing the Effectiveness of Farm Supply Cooperatives: A Comparison of Farmer and Manager Viewpoints
This paper reports the results of a survey of attitudes of commercial farmers and supply cooperative managers about agricultural supply cooperatives. Cooperative managers and farmers frequently made significantly different responses to questionnaire statements. With a few expectations, farm size and farmer age did not appear to influence perceptions about supply cooperatives. Whether a farmer was a cooperative member was important in some cases. Lower prices in lieu of easy credit and patronage refunds were found to be acceptable to farmers, but not at the expense of good service. Managers placed great importance on member loyalty to the supply cooperative without regard to price consideration.Agribusiness,

WHEAT ACREAGE SUPPLY RESPONSE IN THE UNITED STATES
The dynamic structure of wheat acreage supply response is considerably more complex than previous studies have recognized. The distributed lag response is saw-toothed in its pattern, which is believed to eminate from the influence of summer fallow in crop rotations in the Great Plains. The acreage response elasticity estimate for the Great Plains at mean price was 1.3, and for the aggregate U.S. it was 1.5. For the Unites States, the proportion of long-run response experienced over the first five years from an increment to price was .24, .44, .70, .95, and. 99.Crop Production/Industries,
