    Get PDF
The research was commissioned by Nottingham City Council and One Nottingham in August 2008 and was conducted by a team of researchers from the Salford Housing & Urban Studies Unit at the University of Salford. The study was greatly aided by research support from Nottingham City Council Children’s Services Asylum Seeker/Refugee Support Team, as well as a number of community interviewers. The project was managed by a steering group composed of officers representing Nottingham City Council, One Nottingham, Nottingham City Homes, NHS Nottingham City, Nottinghamshire Fire & Rescue Service, Nottinghamshire Police and Basic Educational Guidance in Nottinghamshire (BEGIN). The main objective of this research was to explore the needs and experiences of A8 and A2 migrants living and working in Nottingham

When is an international branch campus?

For a Nottingham alumnus, driving onto the University of Nottingham’s branch campus in Malaysia is a surreal experience. Surrounded by tropical rainforest, a familiar white silhouette emerges—a clock tower atop the signature Trent Building, overlooking a large lake. Despite the heat and humidity, the campus at Semenyih looks and feels like an extension of the University of Nottingham, reinforcing its "one university, three campuses" (United Kingdom, Malaysia and China) branding

While still in the midst of their study abroad experiences, students at Linfield College write reflective essays. Their essays address issues of cultural similarity and difference, compare lifestyles, mores, norms, and habits between their host countries and home, and examine changes in perceptions about their host countries and the United States. In this essay, Katie O\u27Brien describes her observations during her study abroad program at the University of Nottingham in Nottingham, England

Nottingham Lie algebras with diamonds of finite and infinite type

We consider a class of infinite-dimensional, modular, graded Lie algebras, which includes the graded Lie algebra associated to the Nottingham group with respect to its lower central series. We identify two subclasses of Nottingham Lie algebras as loop algebras of finite-dimensional simple Lie algebras of Hamiltonian Cartan type. A property of Laguerre polynomials of derivations, which is related to toral switching, plays a crucial role in our constructions.Comment: 17 pages; minor changes from the previous versio

A transitional plan for digital and technology change

This is a challenging time for universities in a global context as they seek to fully harness the potential of being digital and teaching digitally. Over the last five years the University of the Arts London (UAL) has been on a transformative digital journey. UAL is an art based institution consisting of six world class (World University Rankings, 2020) colleges on 18 sites across an international city and a constituency of users that total over sixty thousand. Since 2015 UAL has been moving towards a more defined governance structure for IT and Digital services, this has largely been developed by working collaboratively with the Colleges and Professional Services. It has become a significant strategic driver that UAL engages in a more strategic approach to the use of digital technology across its wide spectrum of activities. This paper presents a case study of how UAL arrived at its current transitional IT plan that promotes digital transformation. UAL seeks to fully harness the potential of being digital to advance how we manage our digital services and how we think about the potential to leverage the digital landscape to advance UAL’s mission and values. This approach has to include both Learning and Teaching and operational rationalisation. In order to best position UAL for the next three years of growth and success it is essential that this Digital and IT strategy is fully endorsed and fully supported. Over the last twelve months a transitional plan has been developed to enable a transition towards a fully developed IT & digital strategy. The transitional plan sets out how to prepare for the next mid-term UAL strategy through greater business efficiency in the technology function, ensuring IT plays an enabling role in Learning and Teaching, Research and Knowledge Exchange. This plan has involved a necessary segmentation of approach across UAL which has followed the steps of Digitisation, Digitalisation and Digital Transformation (Andersen, 2018) to advance how we manage our UAL wide digital services and governance
