Gemini spectroscopy of the outer disk star cluster BH176

    Get PDF
BH176 is an old metal-rich star cluster. It is spatially and kinematically consistent with belonging to the Monoceros Ring. It is larger in size and more distant from the Galactic plane than typical open clusters, and it does not belong to the Galactic bulge. Our aim is to determine the origin of this unique object by accurately determining its distance, metallicity, and age. The best way to reach this goal is to combine spectroscopic and photometric methods. We present medium-resolution observations of red clump and red giant branch stars in BH176 obtained with the Gemini South Multi-Object Spectrograph. We derive radial velocities, metallicities, effective temperatures, and surface gravities of the observed stars and use these parameters to distinguish member stars from field objects. We determine the following parameters for BH176: Vh=0±15V_h= 0\pm 15 km/s, [Fe/H]=−0.1±0.1[Fe/H]=-0.1\pm 0.1, age 7±0.57\pm 0.5 Gyr, E(V−I)=0.79±0.03E(V-I)=0.79\pm 0.03, distance 15.2±0.2 15.2\pm 0.2 kpc, α\alpha-element abundance [α/Fe]∼0.25[\alpha/Fe] \sim 0.25 dex (the mean of [Mg/Fe], and [Ca/Fe]). BH176 is a member of old Galactic open clusters that presumably belong to the thick disk. It may have originated as a massive star cluster after the encounter of the forming thin disk with a high-velocity gas cloud or as a satellite dwarf galaxy.Comment: 15 pages, 7 fufures, Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysic

Descent Via Isogeny on Elliptic Curves with Large Rational Torsion Subgroups.

We outline PARI programs which assist with various algorithms related to descent via isogeny on elliptic curves. We describe, in this context, variations of standard inequalities which aid the computation of members of the Tate-Shafarevich group. We apply these techniques to several examples: in one case we use descent via 9-isogeny to determine the rank of an elliptic curve; in another case we find nontrivial members of the 9-part of the Tate-Shafarevich group, and in a further case, nontrivial members of the 13-part of the Tate-Shafarevich group

Evidence for the Role of Instantons in Hadron Structure from Lattice QCD

Cooling is used as a filter on a set of gluon fields sampling the Wilson action to selectively remove essentially all fluctuations of the gluon field except for the instantons. The close agreement between quenched lattice QCD results with cooled and uncooled configurations for vacuum correlation functions of hadronic currents and for density-density correlation functions in hadronic bound states provides strong evidence for the dominant role of instantons in determining light hadron structure and quark propagation in the QCD vacuum.Comment: 26 pages in REVTeX, plus 10 figures, uuencoded. System for sterilizing objects

    Get PDF
A system for producing a stream of humidified sterilizing gas for sterilizing objects such as the water systems of space vehicles and the like includes a source of sterilant gas which is fed to a mixing chamber which has inlet and outlet ports. The level of the water only partially fills the mixing chamber so as to provide an empty space adjacent the top of the chamber. A heater is provided for heating the water in the chamber so as to produce a humidified atmosphere. The sterilant gas is fed through an arcuate shaped tubular member connected to the inlet port of the mixing chamber for producing a vortex type of flow of sterilant gas into the chamber for humidification. A tubular member extends from the mixing chamber for supplying the humidified sterilant gas to the object for being sterilized. Scrubbers are provided for removing the sterilant gas after use

On the spectral distribution of photons between planar interfaces

    Get PDF
Using a phenomenological approach to field quantization, an expression for the Keldysh function of photons between two planar interfaces (Casimir geometry) is found for any stationary quantum state of the two bodies. The case of one interface sliding against the other is considered in detail
