How we are tempted into debt: emotional appeals in loan advertising in UK newspapers
The purpose of this study is to examine the use of emotional appeals in loan advertisements and compare it to the use of emotional appeals in savings advertisements. A content analysis of 304 advertisements from nine UK newspapers revealed that the most frequently used emotional appeals in loan advertisements are the following positive emotional appeals: relief, security, and excitement. The use of negative emotional appeals such as guilt, fear, and sorrow was sporadic. Loan advertisements featured more appeals than savings advertisements. Further research will focus on analysing tag lines and images featured in the sample advertisements, and exploring consumersâ responses to, and their understanding of emotional appeals in those advertisements

Currently, the appellate division must decide an enormous number of appeals every year.7 In light of this caseload crisis, New York must reevaluate its generous approach to interlocutory appeals.8 This Comment discusses how the appellate division can deal most efficiently with interlocutory appeals. Part II describes the history of interlocutory appeals in New York, since the creation of the appellate division. Part III explains how other jurisdictions treat interlocutory appeals. Part IV presents the current caseload crisis in the appellate division. Part V describes the controversy over unlimited interlocutory appealability. Part VI evaluates how New York can streamline its approach without sacrificing the appellate division\u27s ability to supervise the lower courts. Part VII suggests that a modified single justice approach is the fairest and most efficient solution. Part VIII concludes that the legislators must take measures to streamline New York\u27s approach to interlocutory appeals
Dollar-Off or Percent-Off? Discount Framing, Construal Levels, and Advertising Appeals
In two studies, the authors reveal how consumers react to marketing messages when two commonly used promotional tactics â price discounts and advertising messages â are synergized. Building on construal level theory, Study 1 shows how dollar-off discount framings (âBuy 2, get $10 offâ) trigger low-level construal, while percent-off discount framings (âBuy 2, Get 50% offâ) activate high-level construal. Study 2 demonstrates that congruent levels are matched when dollar-off discount appeals are paired with attribute appeals and when percent-off appeals are paired with benefit appeals, leading to more effective marketing communications

Random Chance or Loaded Dice: The Politics of Judicial Designation
[Excerpt] âIn the 1950s and 1960s, the southern states struggled to respond to the civil rights decisions being issued by the U.S. Supreme Court as well as the new civil rights laws being passed by Congress. The judicial battleground for this perfect storm of evasion and massive resistance was found in the âoldâ Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals, which encompassed the states of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas. In the âoldâ Fifth Circuit, a minority of liberal appeals court judgesâsympathetic to the civil rights movementâused all legal and administrative power at their disposal to make sure that the federal district and appeals courts were complying with the U.S. Supreme Courtâs mandate in Brown v. Board of Education. In their ground-breaking book A Court Divided: The Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals and the Politics of Judicial Reform, political scientists Deborah J. Barrow and Thomas G. Walker carefully examined the political behavior of these aforementioned liberal appeals court judges and found evidence that Elbert Parr Tuttle, the Fifth Circuitâs chief judge from 1960 to 1967, was manipulating, or âgerrymandering,â the assignment of appeals court judges to both three-judge district court panels, and three-judge appellate court panels to guarantee that the panels had at least two liberal judges who would enforce the Supreme Courtâs desegregation rulings.
