    Technology options for an enhanced air cargo system

    A view of potential enhancements to the air cargo system through technology application is provided. NASA's role in addressing deficiencies of the current civil and military air cargo systems is outlined. The evolution of conventional airfreighter design is traced and projected through the 1990's. Also, several advanced airfreighter concepts incorporating unconventional design features are described to show their potentials benefits. A number of ongoing NASA technology programs are discussed to indicate the wide range of advanced technologies offering potential benefits to the air cargo system. The promise of advanced airfreighters is then viewed in light of the future air cargo infrastructure predicted by extensive systems studies. The derived outlook concludes that the aircraft technology benefits may be offset somewhat by adverse economic, environmental, and institutional constraints

Další část popisuje využití leteckých kontejnerů a palet a zmiňuje možnost přepravy zvláštních druhů nákladu. Následně jsou v práci vysvětleny základní způsoby přepravy nákladu různými druhy letadel. Některá speciální nákladní letadla jsou podrobněji popsána. Poslední část se zabývá pozemní podporou. Jsou uvedeny požadavky na letiště a jeho technické vybavení pro manipulaci s nákladem.The bachelor thesis looks at the system of air cargo. The first part deals with division of aircraft cargo compartments into classes in accordance with safety rules. The following part describes the usage of air containers and pallets and refers to a possibility of transportation of special kinds of cargo. The main ways of cargo transportation by various kinds of aircraft are explained. Some special cargo aircraft are described in more detail. The last part of the thesis is concerned with ground support. The requirements which have to be supplied by an airport are mentioned and also the technical equipment for handling of cargo.

    "Choice of Air Cargo Transshipment Airport: An Application to Air Cargo Traffic to/from Northeast Asia"

    Based on a unique data set of 760 air cargo transshipment routings to/from the Northeast Asian region in 2000, this paper applies an aggregate form of multinomial logit model to identify the critical factors influencing air cargo transshipment route choice decisions. The analysis focuses on the trade-off between monetary cost and time cost while considering other variables relevant for choice of transshipment airport. The estimation method considers the presence of unobserved attributes, and corrects for resulting endogeneity via a two-stage least squares estimation using instrumental variables. Our empirical results show that choice of air cargo transshipment hub is more sensitive to time cost than the monetary costs such as landing fees and line-haul price. For example, our simulation results suggest that a one-hour reduction in total transport and processing time for a particular O-D air cargo traffic would be more effective than a US$1,000 reduction in airport charges. This suggests that it is important to reduce air cargo connecting time at an airport via adequate investment in capacity and automation even by increasing landing and other airport charges.

    Liberalizing air cargo services in APEC

    This study aims at assessing the link between a more liberal air cargo regime and increased bilateral merchandise trade in the Asia Pacific region, under the auspices of APEC. Using the gravity model and employing the Air Liberalisation Index (ALI) developed by the WTO Secretariat, this paper finds strong support for two hypotheses. First, more liberal air services policies are positively, significantly and robustly associated with higher bilateral trade in merchandise. The results also show that air transport policy matters more for some sectors than for others. A particularly strong relationship is found between bilateral liberalisation and trade in manufactured goods, time sensitive products, and parts and components. Considering the sector found to be most sensitive to the degree of aviation liberalisation, the estimates imply that a one point increase in the ALI is associated with an increase of 4% in bilateral parts and components trade, prior to taking account of general equilibrium effects. These findings have important policy implications. In particular, economies actively seeking greater integration in international production networks could greatly benefit from a more liberal aviation policy regime.Aviation; international trade in services; liberalization; international trade in goods; parts and components trade; production networks; APEC.
