The Nature of Inventive Activities: Evidence from a Data-Set of the Okouchi Prizes and a Comparison with the R&D 100 Awards

This paper conducts preliminary analysis on technological innovation by using prize and award data sets: the Okouchi Prizes and the R&D 100 Awards. It aims to outline longitudinal patterns of award-winning industries, organizational type, and inter-organizational collaboration. First, it shows that most awards in the 1960s were given in the area of electric appliances. The iron and steel industry was the second leading prize winner of the Okouchi Prizes. Meanwhile, the segment of transportation equipment, one of the Japan’s leading industries, fared poorly. Looking at the R&D 100 Awards, this segment’s presence has increased in Japan, while it has decreased in the U.S. since the 1970s. Lastly, the inter-organizational collaboration ratio was higher in Japan than in the U.S. until the 1980s. However, the U.S. showed an increase in the collaboration ratio starting in the 1980s, when the ratio dramatically dropped in Japan.

Language and cultural capital in school experience of Polish children in Scotland

    Get PDF
This article addresses the complex relationship between migration and education in the context of recent intra-European labour mobility. It considers how this mobility impacts the education and life chances of migrant students attending schools in Scotland, UK. By examining the experiences of Polish migrant children and youth at schools in Scotland, the article engages with the issues of language, cultural capital transferability and social positioning. Drawing on qualitative data from 65 in-depth interviews with school children aged 5–17 years, their parents and teachers, as well as observations in the contexts of school and home, the article points to a range of factors affecting the transition of migrant pupils to new schools and social environments

Genetic Algorithm Optimization of a High-Directivity Microstrip Patch Antenna Having a Rectangular Profile

    Get PDF
A single high-directivity microstrip patch antenna (MPA) having a rectangular profile, which can substitute a linear array is proposed. It is designed by using genetic algorithms with the advantage of not requiring a feeding network. The patch fits inside an area of 2.54λ x 0.25λ, resulting in a broadside pattern with a directivity of 12 dBi and a fractional impedance bandwidth of 4%. The antenna is fabricated and the measurements are in good agreement with the simulated results. The genetic MPA provides a similar directivity as linear arrays using a corporate or series feeding, with the advantage that the genetic MPA results in more bandwidth

But it is also one of the most complex tests in existence. This Explainer is a guide to understanding NAEP's complex features and the challenges ahead

Deep Learning: Our Miraculous Year 1990-1991

In 2020, we will celebrate that many of the basic ideas behind the deep learning revolution were published three decades ago within fewer than 12 months in our "Annus Mirabilis" or "Miraculous Year" 1990-1991 at TU Munich. Back then, few people were interested, but a quarter century later, neural networks based on these ideas were on over 3 billion devices such as smartphones, and used many billions of times per day, consuming a significant fraction of the world's compute.Comment: 37 pages, 188 references, based on work of 4 Oct 201
