    Open a GLAM lab

    Defining a GLAM Lab: A Galleries, Libraries, Archives and Museums (GLAM) Lab is a place for experimenting with digital collections and data. It is where researchers, artists, entrepreneurs, educators and the interested public can collaborate with an engaged group of partners to create new collections, tools, and services that will help transform the future ways in which knowledge and culture are disseminated. The exchanges and experimentation in a Lab are open, iterative and shared widely. This book describes why and how to open a GLAM Lab and encourages participation in a movement that can transform organisations and the communities they partner with. Building a GLAM Lab: Building a GLAM Lab involves defining its core values to guide future work, fostering a culture that is open, transparent, generous, collaborative, creative, inclusive, bold, ethical, accessible and encourages a mindset of exploration. The Lab should be grounded in user-centred and participatory design processes and its staff should be able to clearly communicate what the Lab is about. It's important to think big but start small and establish quick wins to get up and running. GLAM Lab teams: There are recommendations for the qualities and skills to look for in Labs teams, how to go about finding allies within and outside the institution, and ideas on how to create a nurturing environment for teams to thrive in. Labs teams have no optimal size or composition, and its team members can come from all walks of life. Teams need a healthy culture to ensure a well-functioning Lab which might be augmented intermittently by fellows, interns or researchers-inresidence. For a Lab to have lasting impact it must be integrated into the parent organisation and have the support of staff at all levels. User communities: GLAM Labs will need to engage and connect with potential users and partners. This means rethinking these relationships to help establish clear and targeted messages for specific communities. In turn, this enables Labs to adjust their tools, services and collections to establish deeper partnerships based on co-creation, and open and equal dialogue. Rethinking collections and Data: The book discusses the digital collections which are an integral part of Labs. It provides insights on how to share the collections as data, and how to identify, assess, describe, access, and reuse the collections. In addition, there is information about messy and curated data, digitisation, metadata, rights and preservation. Transformation: Experimentation is the critical core of the Lab's process. Insights about how to transform tools into operational services are demonstrated. It shows that experimentation can prepare the organisational culture and services for transformation. There is an examination of funding and the advantages and disadvantages of various models through discussion of the different mechanisms and options that an organisation can apply to Lab set-ups. Funding and Sustainability: We share insights on how to plan for a Lab's sustainability as well as a step-by-step guide for when an organisation is retiring or decommissioning a Lab. Labs have a pivotal role in the transformation of GLAMs and the book highlights the critical importance of Labs in changing the future of digital cultural heritage.Funded by UCL Qatar (Mmember of Qatar Foundation) and Qatar University Library.     Attachment to the Physical Age of Urban Residential Neighborhoods: A Comparative Case Study of Historic Charleston and I\u27On

    Purpose: To counter the over-reliance of historic preservation research and practice on objective, expert values by understanding how people subjectively value and are attached to the age and design of traditionally-designed urban residential neighborhoods. Research question: How does the age of traditionally designed, urban residential environments affect the degree and character of place attachment for residents? Cases: 1) historic Charleston, south of Broad Street, 2) I\u27On new urbanist development in Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina. Unit of analysis: Residents of 1) historic Charleston and 2) I\u27On. Methodology (methods): Sequential mixed-method: phenomenology (interviews) followed by a survey methodology (on-line survey instrument); both employ photo elicitation techniques. Dependent variables: Measures of general attachment, dependence, identity, and rootedness. (Place attachment is dependent on an individual\u27s aesthetic attitudes about the environment.) Independent variables: Perceptions and valuation of place; behaviors elicited by environmental factors. Findings: Historic Charleston and I\u27On residents perceive their neighborhoods as being layered and having a sense of discovery and mystery. Age value is only associated with patina and spontaneous fantasy in historic Charleston; both of these variables correlate with increased levels of general attachment or dependence. Residents of both neighborhoods exhibit very high levels of general attachment, dependence, and identity. Rootedness is higher in Charleston. Place attachment is correlated with many more environmental variables in historic Charleston than it is in I\u27On. Limitations: A low response rate may indicate there is self-selection bias in the sample; the survey demographics, however, are mostly congruent with census data and lend support to the claim of generalizability of the results. Practical implications: The results of this study can be broadly applied to any discipline in which the holistic valuation of the built and natural environments is important. The mixed-methodological framework provides a way to explain quantitative findings through previously gathered qualitative meanings to increase overall validity and reliability. For historic preservation, it is important to protect masonry patina because of its association with place attachment. Both historic preservation and urban design can benefit from increasing the amount of \u27unseen effort\u27 in interventions made to the built environment. The assessment of what makes certain places significant should focus on sociocultural and phenomenological values as well as objective/expert values

    PRAGMATIST ECOLOGICAL ECONOMICS: FOCUSING ON HUMAN-NATURE RELATIONSHIPS AND SOCIAL-ECOLOGICAL SYSTEMS

    I propose pragmatist philosophy as a companion for ecological economics, a research tradition with a focus on addressing sustainability issues and integrating ecological principles, economics, and the broader social sciences. Ecological economics laudable goals include balancing competing values, tradeoffs, and insights for more equitable decision-making. However, the field is built upon somewhat tenuous philosophical and theoretical foundations, which has resulted in a muddled body of literature, concerns about relativistic science, and questions about the future viability of the field. To address such concerns, I propose and articulate pragmatist ecological economics. Generally, joining pragmatism and ecological economics provides established beliefs about: the nature of reality with a contextual ontology; the way we learn via Dewey’s experience model; the way to assess knowledge based upon deliberative democracy and ‘wary assessment’ and; a clear purpose to communicate, understand, and facilitate social learning about the human-nature relationship. Specific recommendations include a core subject matter (a comprehensive understanding of human-nature relationships), integration of normative sustainability, and a focus on better processes and methods that synthesize across big ideas (e.g., relationship to place research, ecosystem services). I stress that all approaches to understanding the human-nature relationship provide different, partial understandings. Consequently, I demonstrate a ‘research menu’ framework by weighing into a methodological debate between Q- and R-methodology. Finally, I propose that a social-ecological systems perspective and a pragmatist ecological economics are compatible, as the former can help the latter better achieve its applied goals by orienting the understanding of the human-nature relationships within the larger system

    Background Simulated Patients (SPs) are widely used to facilitate the learning of communication skills enabling students to receive detailed feedback on experiential practice in a safe environment. They are also used in the assessment of students’ communication skills in Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCEs). We have observed that our most experienced SPs are highly conversant with medical jargon and consultation skills and have almost become ‘medical faculty’. Consultations can therefore lack the true patient perspective, with SPs focussing their feedback on process rather than giving a true patient perspective. Roundtable objectives To consider the challenges in ensuring that highly experienced SPs continue to respond from a true patient perspective To critique whether the use of SPs in OSCE stations is a valid way to assess students’ communication skills with real patients To consider whether using consultations with Simulated Patients is useful for students in the later years of an Undergraduate medical course who are learning to integrate the different components of a consultation and reasoning clinically in a real-life clinical context To share best practice with colleagues Roundtable A brief interactive presentation including the authors’ experiences of working with experienced Simulated Patients which will draw on current literature regarding the evidence for using Simulated Patients in the teaching and assessing of communication skills Delegates will have the opportunity to take part in three roundtable discussions • OSCE Stations using SPs assess how good students are at communicating with SPs but not with real patients • Experienced SPs are in danger of responding with a faculty not a patient perspective • By using SPs in teaching we over focus on process and forget the global picture

    WS19. From pedagogy to practice: implementing transformative learning in clinical reasoning

    BackgroundHealthcare professionals must provide high quality care that is both efficient and safe. Underpinning this requirement is a presumption that individuals are able to make accurate clinical decisions. Knowledge is not sufficient: judgment and reasoning are required to translate clinical information into accurate decisions to produce effective care. Clinical reasoning skills need to be developed in healthcare professionals in a way that produces change in behaviour. This is aplies to the spectrum of healthcare education: from undergraduate to postgraduate to lifelong practice. Though much is understood about clinical decision-making theory, direction for systematic implementation of teaching in both undergraduate and postgraduate medical education programmes is lacking. In particular, evidence describing transformative teaching methods is limited. This workshop will explore how to design effective spiral curricula in clinical reasoning, compare and contrast experiences from three medical schools in the UK, discuss challenges in implementation, share a variety of teaching methods, provide hands on demonstration of technological resources that have produced changes in learner behaviour and support attendees to adapt methodology to their programmes.Structure of workshopWe will briefly review current knowledge on clinical decision-making learning before sharing experiences from three UK medical schools.Attendees will participate in discussions supported by interactive exercises to explore each subtopic. These exercises will include role play, video and trial of electronic teaching tools used in our current practice. The session will conclude with a reflection on principles and ideas shared during the event

    Personal values and identity structures of Malay and Chinese entrepreneurs in Malaysia

    The research involves a cross-cultural exploratory research on personal values and identity structures of Malay and Chinese entrepreneurs as reflected in their cognitive functioning. The general focus of this research is to study personal values through indirect measures, as emerging constructs elicited from cognitive activities. This study adopts a different approach in that it moves away from the search for a single set of entrepreneurial traits. On the other hand, examining the personal values of entrepreneurs can be more fruitful. In this context, it is assumed that entrepreneurs undergo changes in personal values and identity due to changes in their personal and social situations. This research integrates nomothetic' (perspective of the general) and 'idiographic' (perspective of the particular) research methods. The techniques of data collection used are in-depth interviews, demographic data questionnaire, and Identity Structure Analysis. The data gathered were analysed using three different techniques namely quantitative and qualitative account analysis, statistical analysis using SPSS, and Identity Exploration (IDEX- IDIO and IDEX-NOMO) computer programs. The research reveals fifteen personal values common to Malay and Chinese entrepreneurs: 'personal independence, trustworthiness, a comfortable life, frugality, perseverance, hard work utilise and create opportunities, benevolence, versatility, fatalism, risk taking, self discipline, innovativeness, mutual obligation and reciprocity to family and kinship and high achievement'. The single personal value found specific to Malay entrepreneurs is 'religious piety'. On the other hand, the personal values revealed to be specific to Chinese entrepreneurs are 'sustaining growth and continuity as family business' and 'harmonious relationships with others'. The findings from this study show that there are similarities and differences in the identity structures between both groups of entrepreneurs. Most Malay and Chinese entrepreneurs have a high level of 'idealistic identification' with 'admired person', 'successful entrepreneur', and 'most Chinese entrepreneurs'. Chinese entrepreneurs sampled in this study have a 'moderate' level of 'idealistic identification' with Malay entrepreneurs. Malay entrepreneurs have a 'moderate' level of 'idealistic identification' with their 'father' whereas Chinese entrepreneurs' identification can be considered 'high'. Both groups of entrepreneurs have high self-confidence with regard to their roles as 'an entrepreneur', 'as a husband', and 'as a Malay/ Chinese'. This research has made considerable contribution to knowledge specifically in the field of entrepreneurial studies. This empirical research into personal values of entrepreneurs in general and in particular the linkage with entrepreneur's identity and role expectations broadened the psychological perspective of entrepreneurs. It is reasonable to qualify this research as one of the very few studies into personal values and identity structures of entrepreneurs. More specifically this is the first empirical research not only to compare personal values and identity of Malay and Chinese entrepreneurs but also Malay entrepreneurs in general. The study of personal values and identity of entrepreneurs is still in its infancy. Therefore, further research should be conducted to enrich existing knowledge in this area

    Archaeology of the mound spring campsites near Lake Eyre in South Australia

    This study examines the variability of the stone assemblages at the mound springs campsites in South Australia. The research area is part of the tribal territories of Arabana and Diyari people. It comprises a network of mound springs stretching for about 200 km along the south and southwest shores of Lake Eyre. These mound springs were vital for permanent occupation of this arid region in late prehistory and in the post contact period. Large campsites located near the major springs attest to the prehistoric occupation of the area. Historical accounts reveal that this occupation was abruptly terminated in early 1 8 6 0’s. Although environment and chronology are uniform for all the mound spring sites the assemblages are distinctly different. They vary in the proportions of lithic materials, tool types, and artefact size. Inter-site variability is prominent while intrasite variation is minimal. The research is focused on this fact as it provides an important clue to the nature of springs o c c u p a t i o n. It is demonstrated that the variability of the mound spring campsites reflects different tactics of use and economy of lithic materials at each site. These tactics were influenced by: a) availability of different lithic materials and b) different demands for processing organic materials. It is argued that assemblage patterning is sensitive to local circumstances, and affected by quantity and quality of resources at each site. Consequently the variability between assemblages reflects the overall organisation and strategy of land use. This study attempts not merely to reconstruct human behaviour at each site but rather to understand how this behaviour was organised on the strategic level. This level of organisation is best represented by the differential use of sites within a common settlement system. Organisation such as this suggests consistent links between groups of people in the mound springs area throughout the last thousand years
