Just Because You\u27re Offended Doesn\u27t Mean You\u27re In The Right: A Perspective on Language, Comedy, and Ethics

Some humor is offensive, but does this convey a moral constraint on what comedians can include in their jokes? Using stand up bits and reflections on comedy from George Carlin, Louis C.K., and Doug Stanhope, various philosophies of humor, and the linguistic philosophy of H.P. Grice, I explore the given question and attempt to settle the disputes about when it is prudent to be offended, in what ways comedians should be allowed to offend, and whether or not words can hurt just as much as sticks and stones

Sexism and Jokes: a Case Study

The aim of this paper is to analyse how the interviewees reacted to sexist jokes and to compare it to how they reacted to sexist statements, in order to find out if there is a discrepancy between what people perceive as humour and a serious statement. The interviewees filled out a questionnaire made up of three statements on three of the most common sexist remarks and of three sexist jokes related to the statements. The case study highlights that there are two tendencies: the interviewees either agreed or disagreed with both the statement and the joke, or they disagreed with one and agreed with the other, showing that is it possible to laugh at something with which we do not necessarily agree

Literature is an artwork from the expression of human's feeling and mind. One example for that artwork is novel. There are many novels that human has produced. With different theme, style and storyline, novel becomes a material reading in human world, especially for entertainment. In Theory of Literature, Wellek and Warren state, “Literature cannot be ‘studied' at all. We can only read, enjoy and appreciate it. Overall, we can only accumulate all kinds of information about literature” (1948:15). With that many themes of the novels that human has made, one of the themes that are interesting is horror. Horror usually has connection with mysterious things. With those mysteries, people will get the atmosphere, the feeling and the thought of the story. Sometimes, they will get the terror of the horror itself and make them shudder. They will try to solve the case while reading it as well. Even though, some unexpected accidents that happen will break the assumptions they have made as they read the novel

What do children watch on Indonesian television? This article tries to answer this question in the conviction that TV shows made for children require an understanding of their needs in order to grow, motorically, cognitively, psychologically, socially, and culturally. From my own fieldwork and research done on the data provided by my informants, I found that on television during the time slot set for children there are shows that are not intended for children to watch. I also found that children enjoy two favourite television shows in Indonesia the most, which are not programs designated for children. The conclusion is that Indonesian television pays little attention to children\u27s needs, and children are neglected

This thesis is an examination of autobiographical solo performance. It explores the use of personal trauma and illness in the dramatic form. In addition to investigating how other solo performing artists utilize their medical conditions in their work, this thesis gives some historical context to the author’s own process and development. The thesis culminates in the author’s solo performance script and a desire for its audience to find solace and compassion through the experience of witnessing it being performed
