An examination of the Nihayat Al-Talab and the determination of its place and value in the history of Islamic chemistry

In 1923 there was published the Arabic text of K. al-Muktasab an alchemical work of the thirteenth century written by al-'Iraqi, with a translation and introduction by Dr. E. J. Holmyard. Jildaki, an alchemist of the fourteenth. century, wrote his great work, Nihayat al-Talab as a voluminous commentary on K. al-Muktasab. The present thesis is an attempt to examine the contents of the Nihayat and determine its place and value in the history of Islamic chemistry. The importance of the Nihayat lies in the main in its lengthy quotations from earlier authors whose works are not now extant. It is valuable also because it gives a clear account of the more important alchemical theories and tenets prevalent among the Muslim writers of the Middle Ages. The copy of the Nihayat which I have used consists of three quarto volumes amounting altogether to 1067 pages. The account given of each volume in the present thesis is not in proportion to its size, which is almost the same for all the three volumes; an attempt has been made to exclude, as far as possible, any unnecessary repetitions, and thus the account given of the third volume is only half the size of that of the first. In the course of the Introduction a summary has been given of the theoretical and philosophical views of Jildaki; and an extensive Index has been prepared to facilitate detailed reference to the very large number of subjects mentioned in the thesis

A study of the comprehension of beef cattle terms and concepts by Tennessee cow-calf producers

    Get PDF
The purpose of this study was to collect descriptive data which would indicate the knowledge levels of Tennessee cow-calf producers about terms and concepts related to beef cattle production. The study was designed also to determine what relationship certain personal and experience factors had to knowledge levels. Thirty-eight terms were selected from two University of Tennessee Agricultural Extension Service publications, and a multiple choice test was constructed for the terms. Accompanying questions covered personal and experience factors. Tennessee beef cattle producers who were enrolled in the Tennessee Beef Cattle Improvement Program were tested. Survey forms were completed by mail and by personal interview, and 78 usable forms were returned. There were significant relationships between test scores and years of formal education, whether the farmer had received any college of agriculture training, and the frequency with which farmers read Extension news articles. The mean percentage of correct answers for all questions was 86.6, indicating a high level of understanding. Correct answers ranged from a low of 42.3 per-cent for a term concerning cattle feeding to a high of 100 per cent for three terms concerning cattle breeding and physiology

Nuclearity and Grothendieck-Lidskii formula for quaternionic operators

We introduce an appropriate notion of trace in the setting of quaternionic linear operators, arising from the well-known companion matrices. We then use this notion to define the quaternionic Fredholm determinant of trace-class operators in Hilbert spaces, and show that an analog of the classical Grothendieck-Lidskii formula, relating the trace of an operator with its eigenvalues, holds. We then extend these results to the so-called 23\frac{2}{3}-nuclear (Fredholm) operators in the context of quaternionic locally convex spaces. While doing so, we develop some results in the theory of topological tensor products of noncommutative modules, and show that the trace defined ad hoc in terms of companion matrices, arises naturally as part of a canonical trace

    Get PDF
