A Switch Architecture for Real-Time Multimedia Communications
In this paper we present a switch that can be used to transfer multimedia type of trafJic. The switch provides a guaranteed throughput and a bounded latency. We focus on the design of a prototype Switching Element using the new technology opportunities being offered today. The architecture meets the multimedia requirements but still has a low complexity and needs a minimum amount of hardware. A main item of this paper will be the background of the architectural design decisions made. These include the interconnection topology, buffer organization, routing and scheduling. The implementation of the switching fabric with FPGAs, allows us to experiment with switching mode, routing strategy and scheduling policy in a multimedia environment. The witching elements are interconnected in a Kautz topology. Kautz graphs have interesting properties such as: a small diametec the degree is independent of the network size, the network is fault-tolerant and has a simple routing algorithm
Modelling Reactive Multimedia: Design and Authoring
Multimedia document authoring is a multifaceted activity, and authoring tools tend to concentrate on a restricted set of the activities involved in the creation of a multimedia artifact. In particular, a distinction may be drawn between the design and the implementation of a multimedia artifact.
This paper presents a comparison of three different authoring paradigms, based on the common case study of a simple interactive animation. We present details of its implementation using the three different authoring tools, MCF, Fran and SMIL 2.0, and we discuss the conclusions that may be drawn from our comparison of the three approaches
Adaptive link-weight routing protocol using cross-layer communication for MANET
Routing efficiency is one of the challenges offered by Mobile Ad-hoc Networks (MANETs). This
paper proposes a novel routing technique called Adaptive Link-Weight (ALW) routing protocol. ALW
adaptively selects an optimum route on the basis of available bandwidth, low delay and long route lifetime. The technique adapts a cross-layer framework where the ALW is integrated with application and physical layer. The proposed design allows applications to convey preferences to the ALW protocol to override the default path
selection mechanism. The results confirm improvement over AODV in terms of network load, route discovery time and link reliability
Multi-modal joint embedding for fashion product retrieval

Everyday, e-commerce sites are updating with thousands of images and their associated metadata (textual information), deepening the problem, akin to finding a needle in a haystack. In this paper, we leverage both the images and textual meta-data and propose a joint multi-modal embedding that maps both the text and images into a common latent space. Distances in the latent space correspond to similarity between products, allowing us to effectively perform retrieval in this latent space, which is both efficient and accurate. We train this embedding using large-scale real world e-commerce data by both minimizing the similarity between related products and using auxiliary classification networks to that encourage the embedding to have semantic meaning. We compare against existing approaches and show significant improvements in retrieval tasks on a large-scale e-commerce dataset. Agile Data Offloading over Novel Fog Computing Infrastructure for CAVs
Future Connected and Automated Vehicles (CAVs) will be supervised by
cloud-based systems overseeing the overall security and orchestrating traffic
flows. Such systems rely on data collected from CAVs across the whole city
operational area. This paper develops a Fog Computing-based infrastructure for
future Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITSs) enabling an agile and reliable
off-load of CAV data. Since CAVs are expected to generate large quantities of
data, it is not feasible to assume data off-loading to be completed while a CAV
is in the proximity of a single Road-Side Unit (RSU). CAVs are expected to be
in the range of an RSU only for a limited amount of time, necessitating data
reconciliation across different RSUs, if traditional approaches to data
off-load were to be used. To this end, this paper proposes an agile Fog
Computing infrastructure, which interconnects all the RSUs so that the data
reconciliation is solved efficiently as a by-product of deploying the Random
Linear Network Coding (RLNC) technique. Our numerical results confirm the
feasibility of our solution and show its effectiveness when operated in a
