    Embracing complexity in design is one of the critical issues and challenges of the 21st century. As the realization grows that design activities and artefacts display properties associated with complex adaptive systems, so grows the need to use complexity concepts and methods to understand these properties and inform the design of better artifacts. It is a great challenge because complexity science represents an epistemological and methodological swift that promises a holistic approach in the understanding and operational support of design. But design is also a major contributor in complexity research. Design science is concerned with problems that are fundamental in the sciences in general and complexity sciences in particular. For instance, design has been perceived and studied as a ubiquitous activity inherent in every human activity, as the art of generating hypotheses, as a type of experiment, or as a creative co-evolutionary process. Design science and its established approaches and practices can be a great source for advancement and innovation in complexity science.     A design space exploration method for Identifying emergent behavior in complex systems

    This research seeks to gain insight into the design of distributed multi-agent systems. Distributed multi-agent systems present opportunities for accomplishing a goal using multiple simple systems rather than a more complicated monolithic system. Distributed systems, if properly designed, have the potential to exhibit self-organizing behavior which can lead to systems that require less centralized control in addition to improved robustness, reliability, scalability, and adaptability than traditional monolithic, centralized systems. As engineered systems become more complex, their behavior is more difficult to characterize and predict. Self-organizing systems are difficult to analyze and design since the system behavior is emergent, i.e., the collective behavior only becomes apparent once the system is integrated. The collective behavior is primarily driven by the local interactions of the agents and their environment. This poses an enormous challenge for engineering these systems. The task of system design---selecting the right rules and system parameters---is difficult due to the opaque connection between inputs and responses. The goal of this research is to develop a methodology that provides a way of systematically exploring the design space in order to identify the conditions that give rise to emergent behavior. This information can be used as part of the scientific process of providing feedback through the iterative design process. In order to address this goal, this research seeks to answer the question on how to define, measure, and use the concept of emergence in the design of a multi-agent system. Similarly, it will address the more general question about how to understand "complex systems" in order to analyze and engineer them. This will be used to guide the development of an appropriate methodology. This research develops the Systematic Exploration for Emergence Detection (SEED) methodology for evaluating computer simulations of complex systems in order to identify conditions that lead to emergent behavior. This research proposes a new quantitative measure of emergence which can identify critical transitions in macro-level performance/function of the system due to changes in system context (i.e., environmental conditions or system parameters). The methodology provides the framework for performing a design space exploration using this measure of emergence to identify critical regions in the design space. These regions help to characterize the design space and will help guide the design process by providing insight into design points where the system behavior is unexpected or changing rapidly, which are possible indicators of emergent behavior. The SEED methodology is based on a statistical analysis approach. The design space is efficiently sampled using Design of Experiments methods. At each of these design points, the system behavior is characterized statistically using repeated runs of the simulation. The proposed measure of emergence, Design Space Divergence, is then evaluated across the design space and critical regions are identified using data visualization and clustering methods. A case study is performed on a multi-UAV distributed surveillance problem to investigate whether this framework is capable of identifying emergent behavior. The SEED methodology is used to explore the system design space, including the number of UAVs used in the system and influential vehicle and system parameters. The results show that this methodology provides insights into the landscape of system performance across the design space. More specifically, it identifies a number of candidate designs which exhibit emergent behavior where the system performance rapidly improves as the system undergoes a transition from disorganized to organized behavior. The SEED methodology provides for a more rigorous, traceable, and thorough design process for systems which have been difficult to understand and design using traditional engineering methods.Ph.D

    abstract: What makes living systems different than non-living ones? Unfortunately this question is impossible to answer, at least currently. Instead, we must face computationally tangible questions based on our current understanding of physics, computation, information, and biology. Yet we have few insights into how living systems might quantifiably differ from their non-living counterparts, as in a mathematical foundation to explain away our observations of biological evolution, emergence, innovation, and organization. The development of a theory of living systems, if at all possible, demands a mathematical understanding of how data generated by complex biological systems changes over time. In addition, this theory ought to be broad enough as to not be constrained to an Earth-based biochemistry. In this dissertation, the philosophy of studying living systems from the perspective of traditional physics is first explored as a motivating discussion for subsequent research. Traditionally, we have often thought of the physical world from a bottom-up approach: things happening on a smaller scale aggregate into things happening on a larger scale. In addition, the laws of physics are generally considered static over time. Research suggests that biological evolution may follow dynamic laws that (at least in part) change as a function of the state of the system. Of the three featured research projects, cellular automata (CA) are used as a model to study certain aspects of living systems in two of them. These aspects include self-reference, open-ended evolution, local physical universality, subjectivity, and information processing. Open-ended evolution and local physical universality are attributed to the vast amount of innovation observed throughout biological evolution. Biological systems may distinguish themselves in terms of information processing and storage, not outside the theory of computation. The final research project concretely explores real-world phenomenon by means of mapping dominance hierarchies in the evolution of video game strategies. Though the main question of how life differs from non-life remains unanswered, the mechanisms behind open-ended evolution and physical universality are revealed.Dissertation/ThesisDoctoral Dissertation Physics 201

    Computational Creativity and Music Generation Systems: An Introduction to the State of the Art

    Computational Creativity is a multidisciplinary field that tries to obtain creative behaviors from computers. One of its most prolific subfields is that of Music Generation (also called Algorithmic Composition or Musical Metacreation), that uses computational means to compose music. Due to the multidisciplinary nature of this research field, it is sometimes hard to define precise goals and to keep track of what problems can be considered solved by state-of-the-art systems and what instead needs further developments. With this survey, we try to give a complete introduction to those who wish to explore Computational Creativity and Music Generation. To do so, we first give a picture of the research on the definition and the evaluation of creativity, both human and computational, needed to understand how computational means can be used to obtain creative behaviors and its importance within Artificial Intelligence studies. We then review the state of the art of Music Generation Systems, by citing examples for all the main approaches to music generation, and by listing the open challenges that were identified by previous reviews on the subject. For each of these challenges, we cite works that have proposed solutions, describing what still needs to be done and some possible directions for further research
