    Conscientious objection – does it also apply to nursing students?

    The conscientious clause in nursing can be defined as a kind of special ethical and legal regulation which gives nurses right to object to actively perform certain medical procedures which are against their personal system of values. Usually these values are associated with nurses’ religious beliefs, but not always. Scope of this regulation differs throughout the world. However, it is emphasized that right to the conscientious objection is not absolute and this regulation can not be used in cases of danger to life or serious damage to the health of the patient. Medical procedures to which nurses hold conscientious objection are often within reproductive health services. However, we can also find reports on the use of this right i.e. in end-of-life care and in the process of the implementation of medical experiments. The main issue underlined in the discussion regarding practising conscientious objection in the clinical setting is the collision of two human rights: the right to conscientious objection of medical personnel and the right of patients to specific medical procedures which are legal in their country. If a procedure is legally available in a country it means that patients can expect to receive it, on the other hand, all citizens, including health care workers, have the right to protect their moral identity and the right to object to the implementation of a procedure to which they have a specific objection. It is very difficult to find good ethical and legal balance between these two perspectives

    Academic careers: the value of individual mentorship on research career progression

    The paper discusses how individual mentoring may impact positively on career pathway development for potential and future clinical academic researchers in nursing and allied health professions. Methods: The paper draws on a number of data sources and methodologies in order to fulfil the aims. Firstly, international literature provides an insight into mentoring processes and impact on career development. This is followed by a review of the mentoring experiences based on a UK study on the professorial populations in nursing and allied health professions. The final section reports on results of interviews with early and advanced researchers on their experiences of mentoring. Results: Individual mentoring is valued highly by health care professionals at all stages of career development. It is considered particularly useful when people are in transition towards a more challenging career role.Individuals in receipt of mentoring both formal and informal, report improved confidence in their cability to achieve their career goals. Mentees report improved levels of competence achieved through knowledge aquisition, networking and ability to probelm solve. Conclusions/Summary: Mentoring is considered an important process for health care professionals at all stages of their career. Opportunities to access and receive mentoring support for health care staff in the UK remain limited and sporadic in nature. There are examples of excellent mentoring schemes in place within some institutons and organisations but a national strategy to support mentoring has yet to be developed Key words: Clinical academic careers, mentoring, nursing, allied health profession

    Global Overview of Drug Demand and Supply: Latest Trends, Cross-cutting Issues

    An estimated quarter of a billion people, or around 5 per cent of the global adult population, used drugs at least once in 2015. Even more worrisome is the fact that about 29.5 million of those drug users, or 0.6 per cent of the global adult population, suffer from drug use disorders. This means that their drug use is harmful to the point that they may experience drug dependence and require treatment.The magnitude of the harm caused by drug use is underlined by the estimated 28 million years of "healthy" life (disability-adjusted life years (DALYs)) lost worldwide in 2015 as a result of premature death and disability caused by drug use.Of those years lost, 17 million were attributable solely to drug use disorders across all drug types. DALYs attributable to morbidity and mortality resulting from all causes of drug use have increased overall in the past decade.Yet, with fewer than one in six persons with drug use disorders provided with treatment each year, the availability of and access to science-based services for the treatment of drug use disorders and related conditions remain limited

    This report represents a scientific and working clinical consensus statement on seizure management in dogs based on current literature and clinical expertise. The goal was to establish guidelines for a predetermined, concise, and logical sequential approach to chronic seizure management starting with seizure identification and diagnosis (not included in this report), reviewing decision‐making, treatment strategies, focusing on issues related to chronic antiepileptic drug treatment response and monitoring, and guidelines to enhance patient response and quality of life. Ultimately, we hope to provide a foundation for ongoing and future clinical epilepsy research in veterinary medicine

    Determinants of knowledge about dietary supplements among Polish Internet users with no medical education: a nationwide cross-sectional study

    BACKGROUND: Having an accurate understanding of dietary supplements is a prerequisite for informed decision regarding their intake. However, there is a need for studies of such understanding among the public based on validated research tools. OBJECTIVE: To assess the knowledge about dietary supplements in Polish Internet users with no medical education, to identify its determinants and design an appropriate predictive model. METHODS: The study protocol with statistical analysis plan was prospectively registered. Polish users of an online health service and a social networking service were administered a survey consisting of the recently-developed Questionnaire on Knowledge about Dietary Supplements, Questionnaire on Trust in Advertising Dietary Supplements, Beliefs about Medicines Questionnaire, as well as several other health related single-item measures and sociodemographic questions. The results were subjected to general linear modeling. RESULTS: In total, 6273 participants were included. Out of 17 yes/no questions in the Questionnaire of Knowledge about Dietary Supplements, the mean number of correct responses was 9.0 (95% CI: 8.9 to 9.1). Health service users performed worse than social networking ones by 2.3 (95% CI: 2.1 to 2.5) points in an analysis adjusted for potential confounders. Internet users had less true beliefs about dietary supplements if they presented higher trust in their advertising (adjusted β: -.37, 95% CI: -.39 to -.34), used dietary supplements (adjusted β: -.14, 95% CI: -.17 to -.12), experienced their positive effect (adjusted β: -.16, 95% CI: -.18 to -.13), were older or younger than 35 (adjusted β: -.14, 95% CI: -.17 to -.12), expressed interest in the topic of dietary supplements (adjusted β: -.10, 95% CI: -.13 to -.08), reported getting information about the products from friends (adjusted β: -.13, 95% CI: -.15 to -.11), believed that medicines are harmful (adjusted β: -.12, 95% CI: -.15 to -.10). The proposed 5-predictor model could explain 31.2% of variance in knowledge about dietary supplements. The model appeared resistant to overfitting and was able to forecast the majority of the observed associations. CONCLUSIONS: Polish Internet users with no medical education exhibit some false beliefs regarding dietary supplements. Trusting in advertising dietary supplements appears in conflict with having knowledge about them. There is an urgent need for effective online educational campaigns about dietary supplements and promotion of advertising literacy.     Learning management systems and cloud file hosting services: A study on students’ acceptance

    The aim of this paper is to investigate the motivations that lead higher education students to replace several Learning Management Systems (LMS) services with cloud file hosting services for information sharing and collaboration among them. The research approach is based on the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM). More specifically, the model is devoted to identifying barriers and enablers to the acceptance of these technologies. A questionnaire comprising three factors (Attitude toward using technology, Perceived ease of use and Perceived usefulness) was applied to a sample consisting of 121 higher education students. Results show that the perceived ease of use of cloud file hosting services is above that of LMS tools and services and that cloud file hosting services presented higher levels of perceived usefulness than standard learning management tools. In addition, attitude toward using cloud file hosting services is well above that of using LMS tools

    The association between levels of alcohol consumption and mental health problems and academic performance among young university students

    Purpose: Mental health problems and harmful alcohol consumption have been found to be high among young university students compared to the general population in Australia. This research aimed to investigate the association between levels of drinking and mental health problems and academic performance among university students aged 18 to 24 years. Methods: This study used a quantitative cross-sectional design using data that were collected in 2014 as part of the Youth Alcohol Project (YAP). Participants were randomly drawn from a cross sectional sample of 6000 undergraduate students. Included in the study were only students who were within the age of 18-24, undergraduate, and internally enrolled at the main campus. A total of 2518 undergraduate students aged 18 to 24 years who were enrolled internally at Curtin University Bentley campus were randomly recruited. Data were collected through an online survey. Students were invited to participate in the study through their student email address. The email invitations coincided with the release of semester results to increase the likelihood of students accessing their emails. A further 628 students were randomly recruited through face to face intercept survey during the campus market days. Data were collected by trained research assistants. Validated instruments were used to collected data on levels of alcohol consumption, mental health, and academic performance. Results: A considerable proportion of participants (44%) reported consuming alcohol at hazardous or harmful levels. Multiple logistic regression analysis showed that students who were consuming alcohol at hazardous levels were 1.2 times more likely to report psychological distress than those with lower levels of alcohol consumption (aOR 1.2, 95% CI: 1.1-1.5). In addition, being late for class (aOR 1.7, 95% CI:1.1-2.4), missing classes (aOR = 2.6, 95% CI: 1.9-2.6), inability to concentrate in class (aOR = 2.6, 95% CI: 1.9-3.4), and inability to complete assignments (aOR = 3.5, 95% CI 2.0-6.0) independently predicted for moderate or hazardous alcohol consumption. Conclusion: The study shows that a considerable proportion of undergraduate students at university consume alcohol at hazardous or harmful levels. In addition, high levels of alcohol consumption are associated with poor academic performance and mental health outcomes among students. The results of the study warrant multi-strategy interventions that focus on policy, organisational, educational, environmental and economic strategies that will help to reduce alcohol related harms among university students

    Instrument Development for R-Service Quality: A Literature Review

    Motivated by a paucity of knowledge on the measurement of robotic service (r-service) quality, the current study strives to review the existing literature on r-service quality, with a focus on the potential methodological issues of developing measurement instruments and identifying the dimensionality of r-service quality. With a content analysis of 55 articles, this study identifies several methodological limitations of existing studies in developing measurement scales of r-service quality. This review reveals that dimensions of r-service quality are prone to be contingent on specific con-texts of service industry and service type. Several common dimensions regarding evaluating r-service are identified, including tangibility, responsiveness, reliability, empathy, assurance, ease of use/usability, usefulness, anthropomorphism, perceived intelligence, and social presence.
