Radioactive Material Transportation Considerations with Respect to DOE 3013 Storage Containers
This paper evaluates sealed hardware that meets the requirements of DOE-STD-3013, ''Criteria for Preparing and packaging Plutonium Metals and Oxides for Long-Term Storage'' with respect to radioactive material (Type B quantity) transportation requirements. The Standard provides criteria for packaging of the plutonium materials for storage periods of at least 50 years. The standard requires the hardware to maintain integrity under both normal storage conditions and under anticipated handling conditions. To accomplish this, the standard requires that the plutonium be loaded in a minimum of two nested stainless steel sealed containers that are both tested for leak-tightness per ANSI N14.5. As such the 3013 hardware is robust. While the 3013 STD may provide appropriate storage criteria, it is not intended to provide criteria for transporting the material under the requirements of the Department of Transportation (DOT). In this evaluation, it is assumed that the activity of plutonium exceeds A1 and/or A2 curies as defined in DOT 49 CFR 173.431 and therefore must be shipped as a Type B package meeting the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) requirements of 10 CFR 71. The evaluation considers Type B shipment of plutonium in the 3013 hardware within a certified package for such contents
Genetic compatibility exceeds possible ‘good genes’ effects of sexual selection in lake char
Mating is rarely random in nature, but the effects of mate choice on offspring performance are still poorly understood. We sampled in total 47 wild lake char (Salvelinus umbla) during two breeding seasons and used their gametes to investigate the genetic consequences of different mating scenarios. In a first study, 1,464 embryos that resulted from sperm competition trials were raised singly in either a stress- or non-stress environment. Offspring growth turned out to be strongly reduced with increased genetic relatedness between the parents while male coloration (that reveal aspects of male health) was no significant predictor of offspring performance. In a second experiment one year later, block-wise full-factorial in vitro breeding was used to produce 3,094 embryos that were raised singly after sublethal exposures to a pathogen or water only. Offspring growth was again strongly reduced with increased genetic relatedness between the parents while male coloration was no significant predictor of offspring performance. We conclude that the genetic benefits of mate choice would be strongest if females avoided genetic similarity, while male breeding colors seem more relevant in intra-sexual selection
PVP2005-71698 TRAINING IN THE APPLICATION OF THE ASME CODE TO TRANSPORTATION PACKAGING OF RADIOACTIVE MATERIALS*
ABSTRACT The Department of Energy has established guidelines for the qualifications and training of technical experts preparing and reviewing the safety analysis report for packaging (SARP) and transportation of radioactive materials. One of the qualifications is a working knowledge of, and familiarity with the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, referred to hereafter as the ASME Code. DOE is sponsoring a course on the application of the ASME Code to the transportation packaging of radioactive materials. The course addresses both ASME design requirements and the safety requirements in the federal regulations. The main objective of this paper is to describe the salient features of the course, with the focus on the application of Section III, Divisions 1 and 3, and Section VIII of the ASME Code to the design and construction of the containment vessel and other packaging components used for transportation (and storage) of radioactive materials, including spent nuclear fuel and high-level radioactive waste. The training course includes the ASME Code-related topics that are needed to satisfy all Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) requirements in Title 10 of the Code of Federal Regulation Part 71 (10 CFR 71). Specifically, the topics include requirements for materials, design, fabrication, examination, testing, and quality assurance for containment vessels, bolted closures, components to maintain subcriticality, and other packaging components. The design addresses thermal and pressure loading, fatigue, nonductile fracture and buckling of these components during both normal conditions of transport and hypothetical accident conditions described in 10 CFR 71. Various examples are drawn from the review of certificate applications for Type B and fissile material transportation packagings. BACKGROUN
Molekulové krystaly pro NLO aplikace - sloučeniny 1H-pyrazol-karboxamidinu
Title: Molecular crystals for NLO applications - compounds of 1H-pyrazole-carboxamidine Author: Bc. Soňa Kohúteková Department: Department of Inorganic Chemistry Supervisor: prof. RNDr. Ivan Němec, Ph.D. Abstract: The aim of this diploma thesis is preparation and characterisation of novel compounds of 1H-pyrazole-carboxamidine in consideration of their potential application in the field of nonlinear optics. This thesis is focused on preparation of crystalline salts or adducts combining 1H-pyrazole-carboxamidine with selected inorganic and organic acids. Prepared materials were characterised mainly by the means of vibrational spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction analysis. Quantum-chemical calculations were used for a prediction of nonlinear optical properties as well as for interpretation of measured vibrational spectra. Four different approaches of calculations were used for an optimisation of computing time together with accuracy of the fit of calculated and measured spectra. Finally, measurements of second harmonic generation efficiency of two powder samples with non-centrosymmetric crystal structures were performed. RNDr. Připravené sloučeniny byly studovány především pomocí metod vibrační spektroskopie a rentgenové difrakce. Structural style of the Laramide orogeny, Wyoming foreland. (Volumes I and II)
Thesis (Ph.D.) University of Alaska Fairbanks, 1987This study documents the styles of Laramide structures of the Wyoming foreland, and presents an integrated synthesis of foreland development. Theoretical data and experimental results are compared to field observations, subsurface well control, and geophysical data to judge their application to the foreland. The direction of collision (N40-50E) between the North American and Farallon plates represents the direction of maximum compressive stresses during the Laramide orogeny. A "tectonic front" progressed from west to east across the foreland during Campanian to middle Eocene time. No single model of uplift applies throughout the foreland. Dips of basement faults vary with changes in strike (i.e. northwest strike: 20-45 degrees; north to north-northwest strike: 45-60 degrees; east to northeast strike: 60 degrees to vertical). Northwest-trending uplifts are fold-thrust structures exhibiting dual fault systems and rotated flanks. North-northwest trending uplifts are thrust uplift structures bounded by single reverse faults. East- and northeast-trending uplifts are drape folds and upthrust structures along which displacements were dominantly vertical. The forms of Laramide structures were controlled by upward movement of basement forcing blocks, arrangement of lithology into mechanical packages, and deformational mechanisms which were determined by dominant lithology, applied stresses, and depth of burial. "Crowd" structures (i.e. back-limb, cross-crestal, and rabbit-ear folds) developed as volumetric adjustments in upward-tightening, parallel-folded synclines. There is no consistent relationship between basement fabric and northwest-trending Laramide structures; however, reactivated Precambrian-age zones of weakness controlled east- and northeast-trending compartmental faults, which intersect and segment other trends. As a result, northwest-trending thrust and fold-thrust structures may change directions of asymmetry, be offset, or even replaced by other structural styles, while maintaining overall structural balance. This study has documented approximately 30 miles of crustal shortening (representing 15% strain), which was pervasive and uniform across the foreland
