A Single Visualization Technique for Displaying Multiple Metabolite-Phenotype Associations.
To assist with management and interpretation of human metabolomics data, which are rapidly increasing in quantity and complexity, we need better visualization tools. Using a dataset of several hundred metabolite measures profiled in a cohort of ~1500 individuals sampled from a population-based community study, we performed association analyses with eight demographic and clinical traits and outcomes. We compared frequently used existing graphical approaches with a novel 'rain plot' approach to display the results of these analyses. The 'rain plot' combines features of a raindrop plot and a conventional heatmap to convey results of multiple association analyses. A rain plot can simultaneously indicate effect size, directionality, and statistical significance of associations between metabolites and several traits. This approach enables visual comparison features of all metabolites examined with a given trait. The rain plot extends prior approaches and offers complementary information for data interpretation. Additional work is needed in data visualizations for metabolomics to assist investigators in the process of understanding and convey large-scale analysis results effectively, feasibly, and practically

Extraction of 3D vortex structures from a turbulent puff in a pipe using two-color illumination and flakes
A novel visualization technique was proposed to extract the three-dimensional vortex structure of a turbulent puff, which is a local turbulence event that is observed in pipe flows at relatively low Reynolds numbers. The technique is based on multi-color illumination of microscopic flakes that are suspended in the flow, which makes structural visualization more informative than conventional monochrome approaches. A special optical arrangement of two laser sheets, colored green and blue, was established for the circular pipe. Based on an image analysis sequence, the internal structure of the puff is reconstructed as a cross-sectional temporal 3D image consisting of voxels with unicolor degrees between green and blue, where an individual single vortex is extracted as a pair of two-color stripes. This allows quantification of the azimuthal wavenumber of the vortical structure that characterizes the puff. The wavenumber results agreed well with the results of previous studies, thus supporting the applicability of the proposed visualization technique.

Discovery exhibition: using spatial treemaps in local authority decision making and reporting
At Leicestershire County Council we are using spatial treemaps to analyse labour markets and commuting behaviour. This novel visualization technique, presented at InfoVis 2008, has resulted in a number of insights and discoveries. Transport planners in our organization indicate that the graphics are effective and have advantages over alternatives. As researchers in the local authority we report upon using these graphics to inform decision makers and residents in the county’s evidence base for sustainable transport planning

Gravitational lensing as folds in the sky
We revisit the gravitational lensing phenomenon using a new visualization
technique. It consists in projecting the observers sky into the source plane,
what gives rise to a folded and stretched surface. This provides a clear
graphical tool to visualize some interesting well-known effects, such as the
development of multiple images of a source, the structure of the caustic
curves, the parity of the images and their magnification as a function of the
