Identifying Galaxy Mergers in Observations and Simulations with Deep Learning
Mergers are an important aspect of galaxy formation and evolution. We aim to
test whether deep learning techniques can be used to reproduce visual
classification of observations, physical classification of simulations and
highlight any differences between these two classifications. With one of the
main difficulties of merger studies being the lack of a truth sample, we can
use our method to test biases in visually identified merger catalogues. A
convolutional neural network architecture was developed and trained in two
ways: one with observations from SDSS and one with simulated galaxies from
EAGLE, processed to mimic the SDSS observations. The SDSS images were also
classified by the simulation trained network and the EAGLE images classified by
the observation trained network. The observationally trained network achieves
an accuracy of 91.5% while the simulation trained network achieves 65.2% on the
visually classified SDSS and physically classified EAGLE images respectively.
Classifying the SDSS images with the simulation trained network was less
successful, only achieving an accuracy of 64.6%, while classifying the EAGLE
images with the observation network was very poor, achieving an accuracy of
only 53.0% with preferential assignment to the non-merger classification. This
suggests that most of the simulated mergers do not have conspicuous merger
features and visually identified merger catalogues from observations are
incomplete and biased towards certain merger types. The networks trained and
tested with the same data perform the best, with observations performing better
than simulations, a result of the observational sample being biased towards
conspicuous mergers. Classifying SDSS observations with the simulation trained
network has proven to work, providing tantalizing prospects for using

A pollen identification expert system ; an application of expert system techniques to biological identification : a thesis presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science in Computer Science Massey University
The application of expert systems techniques to biological identification has been investigated and a system developed which assists a user to identify and count air-borne pollen grains. The present system uses a modified taxonomic data matrix as the structure for the knowledge base. This allows domain experts to easily assess and modify the knowledge using a familiar data structure. The data structure can be easily converted to rules or a simple frame-based structure if required for other applications. A method of ranking the importance of characters for identifying each taxon has been developed which assists the system to quickly narrow an identification by rejecting or accepting candidate taxa. This method is very similar to that used by domain experts
The digital brain switch: managing rapid transitions between role identities in a digital world
In this paper, we present initial findings from an EPSRC-sponsored multi-disciplinary research project investigating how digital technologies and social media affect role transitions across work-life domains. The research uses an innovative combination of visual diaries and narrative interviews to capture micro-transitions (âswitchesâ) and explore these with participants in the context of their overall lives. Findings from a pilot study with academics are reported here in terms of: emergent digital boundary management strategies; triggers for rapid switching and the effects of this; and the function of meta roles and multi-role cognitions. The research contributes to current thinking in work-life literature in terms of devising innovative methods, focusing on the micro- transitional and in considering the role of the digital and social media in boundary management
Wheat signature modeling and analysis for improved training statistics
The author has identified the following significant results. The spectral, spatial, and temporal characteristics of wheat and other signatures in LANDSAT multispectral scanner data were examined through empirical analysis and simulation. Irrigation patterns varied widely within Kansas; 88 percent of wheat acreage in Finney was irrigated and 24 percent in Morton, as opposed to less than 3 percent for western 2/3's of the State. The irrigation practice was definitely correlated with the observed spectral response; wheat variety differences produced observable spectral differences due to leaf coloration and different dates of maturation. Between-field differences were generally greater than within-field differences, and boundary pixels produced spectral features distinct from those within field centers. Multiclass boundary pixels contributed much of the observed bias in proportion estimates. The variability between signatures obtained by different draws of training data decreased as the sample size became larger; also, the resulting signatures became more robust and the particular decision threshold value became less important
Visual7W: Grounded Question Answering in Images
We have seen great progress in basic perceptual tasks such as object
recognition and detection. However, AI models still fail to match humans in
high-level vision tasks due to the lack of capacities for deeper reasoning.
Recently the new task of visual question answering (QA) has been proposed to
evaluate a model's capacity for deep image understanding. Previous works have
established a loose, global association between QA sentences and images.
However, many questions and answers, in practice, relate to local regions in
the images. We establish a semantic link between textual descriptions and image
regions by object-level grounding. It enables a new type of QA with visual
answers, in addition to textual answers used in previous work. We study the
visual QA tasks in a grounded setting with a large collection of 7W
multiple-choice QA pairs. Furthermore, we evaluate human performance and
several baseline models on the QA tasks. Finally, we propose a novel LSTM model
with spatial attention to tackle the 7W QA tasks.Comment: CVPR 201

Outsourcing labour to the cloud
Various forms of open sourcing to the online population are establishing themselves as cheap, effective methods of getting work done. These have revolutionised the traditional methods for innovation and have contributed to the enrichment of the concept of 'open innovation'. To date, the literature concerning this emerging topic has been spread across a diverse number of media, disciplines and academic journals. This paper attempts for the first time to survey the emerging phenomenon of open outsourcing of work to the internet using 'cloud computing'. The paper describes the volunteer origins and recent commercialisation of this business service. It then surveys the current platforms, applications and academic literature. Based on this, a generic classification for crowdsourcing tasks and a number of performance metrics are proposed. After discussing strengths and limitations, the paper concludes with an agenda for academic research in this new area
Aggregating Local Descriptors for Epigraphs Recognition
In this paper, we consider the task of recognizing epigraphs in images such as photos taken using mobile devices. Given a set of 17,155 photos related to 14,560 epigraphs, we used a k-NearestNeighbor approach in order to perform the recognition. The contribution of this work is in evaluating state-of-the-art visual object recognition techniques in this specific context.
