    Design considerations for a space database

    Part of the information used in a real-time simulator is stored in the visual database. This information is processed by an image generator and displayed as a real-time visual image. The database must be constructed in a specific format, and it should efficiently utilize the capacities of the image generator that is was created for. A visual simulation is crucially dependent upon the success with which the database provides visual cues and recognizable scenes. For this reason, more and more attention is being paid to the art and science of creating effective real-time visual databases. Investigated here are the database design considerations required for a space-oriented real-time simulator. Space applications often require unique designs that correspond closely to the particular image-generator hardware and visual-database-management software. Specific examples from the databases constructed for NASA and its Evans and Sutherland CT6 image generator illustrate the various design strategies used in a space-simulation environment.     A STILE Project case study: The evaluation of a computer‐based visual key for fossil identification

    This paper presents an investigation of the effectiveness, for specimen identification, of a visual representation of a biological key. The example used in the investigation, the beetles database, is one of a number of resources developed under the STILE Project (Students’ and Teachers’ Integrated Learning Environment). This project uses hypermedia to provide greater opportunities for independent and flexible modes of learning both in a campus situation and for distance learning. The beetles database was constructed to aid final‐year project students’ in their identification of palaeo‐ecological field specimens. The development of this database was a response to a perceived need to reduce time spent on the time‐consuming skill of identification, and to focus students’ efforts on the significance of their field data. Four third‐year student undergraduates, two experienced and two inexperienced users of paper keys, were presented with a range of field specimens to identify using either the paper key or the STILE visual database. Our results show that the visual database was both the preferred way of operating and more effective than paper keys for all students

    A Graph Rewriting Visual Language for Database Programming

    Textual database programming languages are computationally complete, but have the disadvantage of giving the user a non-intuitive view of the database information that is being manipulated. Visual languages developed in recent years have allowed naive users access to a direct representation of data, often in a graph form, but have concentrated on user interface rather than complex programming tasks. There is a need for a system which combines the advantages of both these programming methods. We describe an implementation of Spider, an experimental visual database programming language aimed at programmers. It uses a graph rewriting paradigm as a basis for a fully visual, computationally complete language. The graphs it rewrites represent the schema and instances of a database. The unique graph rewriting method used by Spider has syntactic and semantic simplicity. Its form of algorithmic expression allows complex computation to be easily represented in short programs. Furthermore, Spider has greater power than normally provided in textual systems, and we show that queries on the schema and associative queries can be performed easily and without requiring any additions to the language

    Audio-Visual Speaker Identification using the CUAVE Database

    The freely available nature of the CUAVE database allows it to provide a valuable platform to form benchmarks and compare research. This paper shows that the CUAVE database can successfully be used to test speaker identifications systems, with performance comparable to existing systems implemented on other databases. Additionally, this research shows that the optimal configuration for decisionfusion of an audio-visual speaker identification system relies heavily on the video modality in all but clean speech conditions

    Supporting Data mining of large databases by visual feedback queries

    In this paper, we describe a query system that provides visual relevance feedback in querying large databases. Our goal is to support the process of data mining by representing as many data items as possible on the display. By arranging and coloring the data items as pixels according to their relevance for the query, the user gets a visual impression of the resulting data set. Using an interactive query interface, the user may change the query dynamically and receives immediate feedback by the visual representation of the resulting data set. Furthermore, by using multiple windows for different parts of a complex query, the user gets visual feedback for each part of the query and, therefore, may easier understand the overall result. Our system allows to represent the largest amount of data that can be visualized on current display technology, provides valuable feedback in querying the database, and allows the user to find results which, otherwise, would remain hidden in the database
