Visual object-oriented development of parallel applications
PhD ThesisDeveloping software for parallel architectures is a notoriously difficult task, compounded further by the range of available parallel architectures. There has been little research effort invested in how to engineer parallel applications for more general problem domains than the traditional numerically intensive domain. This thesis addresses these issues. An object-oriented paradigm for the development of general-purpose parallel applications, with full lifecycle support, is proposed and investigated, and a visual programming language to support that paradigm is developed. This thesis presents experiences and results from experiments with this new model for parallel application development.Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council
Deep Learning-Based Multiple Object Visual Tracking on Embedded System for IoT and Mobile Edge Computing Applications
Compute and memory demands of state-of-the-art deep learning methods are
still a shortcoming that must be addressed to make them useful at IoT
end-nodes. In particular, recent results depict a hopeful prospect for image
processing using Convolutional Neural Netwoks, CNNs, but the gap between
software and hardware implementations is already considerable for IoT and
mobile edge computing applications due to their high power consumption. This
proposal performs low-power and real time deep learning-based multiple object
visual tracking implemented on an NVIDIA Jetson TX2 development kit. It
includes a camera and wireless connection capability and it is battery powered
for mobile and outdoor applications. A collection of representative sequences
captured with the on-board camera, dETRUSC video dataset, is used to exemplify
the performance of the proposed algorithm and to facilitate benchmarking. The
results in terms of power consumption and frame rate demonstrate the
feasibility of deep learning algorithms on embedded platforms although more
effort to joint algorithm and hardware design of CNNs is needed.Comment: This work has been submitted to the IEEE for possible publication.

Simulation of complex environments:the Fuzzy Cognitive Agent
The world is becoming increasingly competitive by the action of liberalised national and global markets. In parallel these markets have become increasingly complex making it difficult for participants to optimise their trading actions. In response, many differing computer simulation techniques have been investigated to develop either a deeper understanding of these evolving markets or to create effective system support tools. In this paper we report our efforts to develop a novel simulation platform using fuzzy cognitive agents (FCA). Our approach encapsulates fuzzy cognitive maps (FCM) generated on the Matlab Simulink platform within commercially available agent software. We firstly present our implementation of Matlab Simulink FCMs and then show how such FCMs can be integrated within a conceptual FCA architecture. Finally we report on our efforts to realise an FCA by the integration of a Matlab Simulink based FCM with the Jack Intelligent Agent Toolkit
The What-And-Where Filter: A Spatial Mapping Neural Network for Object Recognition and Image Understanding
The What-and-Where filter forms part of a neural network architecture for spatial mapping, object recognition, and image understanding. The Where fllter responds to an image figure that has been separated from its background. It generates a spatial map whose cell activations simultaneously represent the position, orientation, ancl size of all tbe figures in a scene (where they are). This spatial map may he used to direct spatially localized attention to these image features. A multiscale array of oriented detectors, followed by competitve and interpolative interactions between position, orientation, and size scales, is used to define the Where filter. This analysis discloses several issues that need to be dealt with by a spatial mapping system that is based upon oriented filters, such as the role of cliff filters with and without normalization, the double peak problem of maximum orientation across size scale, and the different self-similar interpolation properties across orientation than across size scale. Several computationally efficient Where filters are proposed. The Where filter rnay be used for parallel transformation of multiple image figures into invariant representations that are insensitive to the figures' original position, orientation, and size. These invariant figural representations form part of a system devoted to attentive object learning and recognition (what it is). Unlike some alternative models where serial search for a target occurs, a What and Where representation can he used to rapidly search in parallel for a desired target in a scene. Such a representation can also be used to learn multidimensional representations of objects and their spatial relationships for purposes of image understanding. The What-and-Where filter is inspired by neurobiological data showing that a Where processing stream in the cerebral cortex is used for attentive spatial localization and orientation, whereas a What processing stream is used for attentive object learning and recognition.Advanced Research Projects Agency (ONR-N00014-92-J-4015, AFOSR 90-0083); British Petroleum (89-A-1204); National Science Foundation (IRI-90-00530, Graduate Fellowship); Office of Naval Research (N00014-91-J-4100, N00014-95-1-0409, N00014-95-1-0657); Air Force Office of Scientific Research (F49620-92-J-0499, F49620-92-J-0334
