    Get PDF
Navigation systems provide the optimized route from one location to another. It is mainly assisted by external technologies such as Global Positioning System (GPS) and satellite-based radio navigation systems. GPS has many advantages such as high accuracy, available anywhere, reliable, and self-calibrated. However, GPS is limited to outdoor operations. The practice of combining different sources of data to improve the overall outcome is commonly used in various domains. GIS is already integrated with GPS to provide the visualization and realization aspects of a given location. Internet of things (IoT) is a growing domain, where embedded sensors are connected to the Internet and so IoT improves existing navigation systems and expands its capabilities. This chapter proposes a framework based on the integration of GPS, GIS, IoT, and mobile communications to provide a comprehensive and accurate navigation solution. In the next section, we outline the limitations of GPS, and then we describe the integration of GIS, smartphones, and GPS to enable its use in mobile applications. For the rest of this chapter, we introduce various navigation implementations using alternate technologies integrated with GPS or operated as standalone devices

Cumputer Vision is an area of knowledge that studies the development of artificial systems capable of detecting and developing the perception of the environment through image information or multidimensional data. Nowadays, vision systems are widely integrated into robotic systems. Visual perception and manipulation are combined in two steps "look" and then "move", generating a visual feedback control loop. In this context, there is a growing interest in using computer vision techniques in unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), also known as drones. These techniques are applied to position the drone in autonomous flight mode, or to perform the detection of regions for aerial surveillance or points of interest. Computer vision systems generally take three steps to the operation, which are: data acquisition in numerical form, data processing and data analysis. The data acquisition step is usually performed by cameras or proximity sensors. After data acquisition, the embedded computer performs data processing by performing algorithms with measurement techniques (variables, index and coefficients), detection (patterns, objects or area) or monitoring (people, vehicles or animals). The resulting processed data is analyzed and then converted into decision commands that serve as control inputs for the autonomous robotic system In order to integrate the visual computing systems with the different UAVs platforms, this work proposes the development of a framework for mission control and guidance of UAVs based on computer vision. The framework is responsible for managing, encoding, decoding, and interpreting commands exchanged between flight controllers and visual computing algorithms. As a case study, two algorithms were developed to provide autonomy to UAVs intended for application in precision agriculture. The first algorithm performs the calculation of a reflectance coefficient used to perform the punctual, self-regulated and efficient application of agrochemicals. The second algorithm performs the identification of crop lines to perform the guidance of the UAVs on the plantation. The performance of the proposed framework and proposed algorithms was evaluated and compared with the state of the art, obtaining satisfactory results in the implementation of embedded hardware

Collaborative navigation as a solution for PNT applications in GNSS challenged environments: report on field trials of a joint FIG / IAG working group

PNT stands for Positioning, Navigation, and Timing. Space-based PNT refers to the capabilities enabled by GNSS, and enhanced by Ground and Space-based Augmentation Systems (GBAS and SBAS), which provide position, velocity, and timing information to an unlimited number of users around the world, allowing every user to operate in the same reference system and timing standard. Such information has become increasingly critical to the security, safety, prosperity, and overall qualityof-life of many citizens. As a result, space-based PNT is now widely recognized as an essential element of the global information infrastructure. This paper discusses the importance of the availability and continuity of PNT information, whose application, scope and significance have exploded in the past 10–15 years. A paradigm shift in the navigation solution has been observed in recent years. It has been manifested by an evolution from traditional single sensor-based solutions, to multiple sensor-based solutions and ultimately to collaborative navigation and layered sensing, using non-traditional sensors and techniques – so called signals of opportunity. A joint working group under the auspices of the International Federation of Surveyors (FIG) and the International Association of Geodesy (IAG), entitled ‘Ubiquitous Positioning Systems’ investigated the use of Collaborative Positioning (CP) through several field trials over the past four years. In this paper, the concept of CP is discussed in detail and selected results of these experiments are presented. It is demonstrated here, that CP is a viable solution if a ‘network’ or ‘neighbourhood’ of users is to be positioned / navigated together, as it increases the accuracy, integrity, availability, and continuity of the PNT information for all users

AGVs in the manufacturing industry currently constitute the largest application area for mobile robots. Other applications have been gradually emerging, including various transporting tasks in demanding environments, such as mines or harbours. Most of the new potential applications require a free-ranging navigation system, which means that the path of a robot is no longer bound to follow a buried inductive cable. Moreover, changing the route of a robot or taking a new working area into use must be as effective as possible. These requirements set new challenges for the navigation systems of mobile robots. One of the basic methods of building a free ranging navigation system is to combine dead reckoning navigation with the detection of beacons at known locations. This approach is the backbone of the navigation systems in this study. The study describes research and development work in the area of mobile robotics including the applications in forestry, agriculture, mining, and transportation in a factory yard. The focus is on describing navigation sensors and methods for position and heading estimation by fusing dead reckoning and beacon detection information. A Kalman filter is typically used here for sensor fusion. Both cases of using either artificial or natural beacons have been covered. Artificial beacons used in the research and development projects include specially designed flat objects to be detected using a camera as the detection sensor, GPS satellite positioning system, and passive transponders buried in the ground along the route of a robot. The walls in a mine tunnel have been used as natural beacons. In this case, special attention has been paid to map building and using the map for positioning. The main contribution of the study is in describing the structure of a working navigation system, including positioning and position control. The navigation system for mining application, in particular, contains some unique features that provide an easy-to-use procedure for taking new production areas into use and making it possible to drive a heavy mining machine autonomously at speed comparable to an experienced human driver.reviewe
