    Design and implementation of an uplink connection for a light-based IoT node

    Abstract. In the wake of soaring demand for shrinking radio frequency (RF) spectrum, light-fidelity (LiFi) has been heralded as a solution to accommodate resources for future communication networks. Infrared (IR) and visible light communication (VLC) are meant to be used within LiFi because of numerous advantages. By combining the paradigm of internet of things (IoT) along with LiFi, light-based IoT (LIoT) emerges as a potential enabler of future 6G networks. With tremendous number of interconnected devices, LIoT nodes need to be able to receive and transmit data while being energy autonomous. One of the most promising clean energy sources comes from both natural and artificial light. In addition to providing illumination and energy, light can also be utilized as a robust information carrier. In order to provide bidirectional connectivity to LIoT node, both downlink and uplink have to be taken into consideration. Whereas downlink relies on visible light as a carrier, uplink approach can be engineered freely within specific requirements. With this in mind, this master’s thesis explores possible solutions for providing uplink connectivity. After analysis of possible solutions, the LIoT proof-of-concept was designed, implemented and validated.     Visible Light Communication Cyber Security Vulnerabilities For Indoor And Outdoor Vehicle-To-Vehicle Communication

    Light fidelity (Li-Fi), developed from the approach of Visible Light Communication (VLC), is a great replacement or complement to existing radio frequency-based (RF) networks. Li-Fi is expected to be deployed in various environments were, due to Wi-Fi congestion and health limitations, RF should not be used. Moreover, VLC can provide the future fifth generation (5G) wireless technology with higher data rates for device connectivity which will alleviate the traffic demand. 5G is playing a vital role in encouraging the modern applications. In 2023, the deployment of all the cellular networks will reach more than 5 billion users globally. As a result, the security and privacy of 5G wireless networks is an essential problem as those modern applications are in people\u27s life everywhere. VLC security is as one of the core physical-layer security (PLS) solutions for 5G networks. Due to the fact that light does not penetrate through solid objects or walls, VLC naturally has higher security and privacy for indoor wireless networks compared to RF networks. However, the broadcasting nature of VLC caused concerns, e.g., eavesdropping, have created serious attention as it is a crucial step to validate the success of VLC in wild. The aim of this thesis is to properly address the security issues of VLC and further enhance the VLC nature security. We analyzed the secrecy performance of a VLC model by studying the characteristics of the transmitter, receiver and the visible light channel. Moreover, we mitigated the security threats in the VLC model for the legitimate user, by 1) implementing more access points (APs) in a multiuser VLC network that are cooperated, 2) reducing the semi-angle of LED to help improve the directivity and secrecy and, 3) using the protected zone strategy around the AP where eavesdroppers are restricted. According to the model\u27s parameters, the results showed that the secrecy performance in the proposed indoor VLC model and the vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) VLC outdoor model using a combination of multiple PLS techniques as beamforming, secure communication zones, and friendly jamming is enhanced.     IoT driven ambient intelligence architecture for indoor intelligent mobility

    Personal robots are set to assist humans in their daily tasks. Assisted living is one of the major applications of personal assistive robots, where the robots will support health and wellbeing of the humans in need, especially elderly and disabled. Indoor environments are extremely challenging from a robot perception and navigation point of view, because of the ever-changing decorations, internal organizations and clutter. Furthermore, human-robot-interaction in personal assistive robots demands intuitive and human-like intelligence and interactions. Above challenges are aggravated by stringent and often tacit requirements surrounding personal privacy that may be invaded by continuous monitoring through sensors. Towards addressing the above problems, in this paper we present an architecture for "Ambient Intelligence" for indoor intelligent mobility by leveraging IoTs within a framework of Scalable Multi-layered Context Mapping Framework. Our objective is to utilize sensors in home settings in the least invasive manner for the robot to learn about its dynamic surroundings and interact in a human-like manner.     Hybrid Free-Space Optical and Visible Light Communication Link

    V součastnosti bezdrátové optické komunikace (optical wireless communication, OWC) získávají širokou pozornost jako vhodný doplněk ke komunikačním přenosům v rádiovém pásmu. OWC nabízejí několik výhod včetně větší šířky přenosového pásma, neregulovaného frekvenčního pásma či odolnosti vůči elektromagnetickému rušení. Tato práce se zabývá návrhem OWC systémů pro připojení koncových uživatelů. Samotná realizace spojení může být provedena za pomoci různých variant bezdrátových technologií, například pomocí OWC, kombinací různých OWC technologií nebo hybridním rádio-optickým spojem. Za účelem propojení tzv. poslední míle je analyzován optický bezvláknový spoj (free space optics, FSO). Tato práce se dále zabývá analýzou přenosových vlastností celo-optického více skokového spoje s důrazem na vliv atmosférických podmínek. V dnešní době mnoho uživatelů tráví čas ve vnitřních prostorech kanceláří či doma, kde komunikace ve viditelném spektru (visible light communication, VLC) poskytuje lepší přenosové parametry pokrytí než úzce směrové FSO. V rámci této práce byla odvozena a experimentálně ověřena závislost pro bitovou chybovost přesměrovaného (relaying) spoje ve VLC. Pro propojení poskytovatele datavých služeb s koncovým uživatelem může být výhodné zkombinovat více přenosových technologií. Proto je navržen a analyzovám systém pro překonání tzv. problému poslední míle a posledního metru kombinující hybridní FSO a VLC technologie.The field of optical wireless communications (OWC) has recently attracted significant attention as a complementary technology to radio frequency (RF). OWC systems offer several advantages including higher bandwidth, an unregulated spectrum, resistance to electromagnetic interference and a high order of reusability. The thesis focuses on the deployment and analyses of end-user interconnections using the OWC systems. Interconnection can be established by many wireless technologies, for instance, by a single OWC technology, a combination of OWC technologies, or by hybrid OWC/RF links. In order to establish last mile outdoor interconnection, a free-space optical (FSO) has to be investigated. In this thesis, the performance of all-optical multi-hop scenarios is analyzed under atmospheric conditions. However, nowadays, many end users spend much time in indoor environments where visible light communication (VLC) technology can provide better transmission parameters and, significantly, better coverage. An analytical description of bit error rate for relaying VLC schemes is derived and experimentally verified. Nonetheless, for the last mile, interconnection of a provider and end users (joint outdoor and indoor connection) can be advantageous when combining multiple technologies. Therefore, a hybrid FSO/VLC system is proposed and analyzed for the interconnection of the last mile and last meter bottleneck

    Design and implementation of a light-based IoT (LIoT) node using printed electronics

    Abstract. The recent exponential growth of new radio frequency (RF) based applications such as internet of things (IoT) technology is creating a huge bandwidth demand in the already congested RF spectrum. Meanwhile, visible light communication (VLC) is emerging as a technology which can be used as an alternative wireless communications solution which makes no use of the radio spectrum. In addition, continuously powering up the massively deployed IoT nodes is becoming a challenge when it comes to maintenance costs. Development of energy autonomous IoT nodes would certainly assist to solve the energy challenge. Previous work shows that renewable energy sources can be utilized to address the energy requirement of IoT nodes. Under this context, we have developed a light-based energy autonomous IoT (LIoT) prototype. This thesis presents a feasibility study and proof of concept of LIoT, including design, implementation and validation of LIoT nodes and a transmitter unit. Furthermore, the ability of multiuser communication using VLC as well as indoor light-based energy harvesting were demonstrated and tested in this thesis. To make the concept of LIoT more attractive from an implementation standpoint, and to create a future-looking solution, printed electronics (PE) technology was used as a part of the implementation. Two key components of the prototype were based on PE technology, photovoltaic cells used to harvest energy, and displays used to exhibit information transmitted to the LIoT node. In the future, when PE technology becomes more mature, very low-cost, small form-factor and environmentally friendly LIoT nodes could be implemented on thin substrates. A wide array of possible applications can be created combining the concept of light-based IoT with printed electronics. The proposed LIoT concept shows great promise as an enabling technology for 6G
