    Measuring Information Security Awareness Efforts in Social Networking Sites – A Proactive Approach

    For Social Network Sites to determine the effectiveness of their Information Security Awareness (ISA) techniques, many measurement and evaluation techniques are now in place to ensure controls are working as intended. While these techniques are inexpensive, they are all incident- driven as they are based on the occurrence of incident(s). Additionally, they do not present a true reflection of ISA since cyber-incidents are hardly reported. They are therefore adjudged to be post-mortem and risk permissive, the limitations that are inacceptable in industries where incident tolerance level is low. This paper aims at employing a non-incident statistic approach to measure ISA efforts. Using an object- oriented programming approach, PhP is employed as the coding language with MySQL database engine at the back-end to develop sOcialistOnline – a Social Network Sites (SNS) fully secured with multiple ISA techniques. Rather than evaluating the effectiveness of ISA efforts by success of attacks or occurrence of an event, password scanning is implemented to proactively measure the effects of ISA techniques in sOcialistOnline. Thus, measurement of ISA efforts is shifted from detective and corrective to preventive and anticipatory paradigms which are the best forms of information security approach

    Training of Crisis Mappers and Map Production from Multi-sensor Data: Vernazza Case Study (Cinque Terre National Park, Italy)

    This aim of paper is to presents the development of a multidisciplinary project carried out by the cooperation between Politecnico di Torino and ITHACA (Information Technology for Humanitarian Assistance, Cooperation and Action). The goal of the project was the training in geospatial data acquiring and processing for students attending Architecture and Engineering Courses, in order to start up a team of "volunteer mappers". Indeed, the project is aimed to document the environmental and built heritage subject to disaster; the purpose is to improve the capabilities of the actors involved in the activities connected in geospatial data collection, integration and sharing. The proposed area for testing the training activities is the Cinque Terre National Park, registered in the World Heritage List since 1997. The area was affected by flood on the 25th of October 2011. According to other international experiences, the group is expected to be active after emergencies in order to upgrade maps, using data acquired by typical geomatic methods and techniques such as terrestrial and aerial Lidar, close-range and aerial photogrammetry, topographic and GNSS instruments etc.; or by non conventional systems and instruments such us UAV, mobile mapping etc. The ultimate goal is to implement a WebGIS platform to share all the data collected with local authorities and the Civil Protectio

    Indonesia is one of the countries in this world that has the most outstanding fishery potential. There are more than 3000 fish species under Indonesia's sea, yet the people are still not able to relish them completely. Illegal fishing by foreign ships in Indonesia's territorial sea is one of the reasons why this happens. In order to minimize this kind of loss, those ships should be detected automatically by implementing image processing and artificial intelligence techniques. The study proposed techniques for automatic detection of ships at sea on digital images. These techniques are global image thresholding and artificial neural network backpropagation. The result of this research is proposed of technique able to detect ship with 85% accuracy level. This method may be improved by adding more training data varieties

    A Heuristic Methodology for Optimal Deployment of Radar Systems in a Constrained Area of Operation

    In emerging network-centric warfare scenarios, the location of sensors in the sensor-grid plays a dominant role in determining the effectiveness of air defence against enemy air threats. Maximising the coverage area of sensors in the sensor-grid, considering operational performance parameters, terrain features and deployability is a challenging task for military operational planners and commanders. Such optimisation problems may not be amenable to classical operations research techniques, or may require enormous computational time to arrive at the results as the decision space grows non-linearly for large areas of operation. In this paper, a novel methodology that uses a heuristic technique (genetic algorithms) to compute the optimal or near-optimal deployment locations for a given set of sensors in a constrained area of operation is proposed. The proposed methodology is illustrated with a number of case studies and a decision support tool is developed as an aid to the military commanders

    A New Vehicle Localization Scheme Based on Combined Optical Camera Communication and Photogrammetry

    The demand for autonomous vehicles is increasing gradually owing to their enormous potential benefits. However, several challenges, such as vehicle localization, are involved in the development of autonomous vehicles. A simple and secure algorithm for vehicle positioning is proposed herein without massively modifying the existing transportation infrastructure. For vehicle localization, vehicles on the road are classified into two categories: host vehicles (HVs) are the ones used to estimate other vehicles' positions and forwarding vehicles (FVs) are the ones that move in front of the HVs. The FV transmits modulated data from the tail (or back) light, and the camera of the HV receives that signal using optical camera communication (OCC). In addition, the streetlight (SL) data are considered to ensure the position accuracy of the HV. Determining the HV position minimizes the relative position variation between the HV and FV. Using photogrammetry, the distance between FV or SL and the camera of the HV is calculated by measuring the occupied image area on the image sensor. Comparing the change in distance between HV and SLs with the change in distance between HV and FV, the positions of FVs are determined. The performance of the proposed technique is analyzed, and the results indicate a significant improvement in performance.     Extraction of Vehicle Groups in Airborne Lidar Point Clouds with Two-Level Point Processes

    In this paper we present a new object based hierarchical model for joint probabilistic extraction of vehicles and groups of corresponding vehicles - called traffic segments - in airborne Lidar point clouds collected from dense urban areas. Firstly, the 3-D point set is classified into terrain, vehicle, roof, vegetation and clutter classes. Then the points with the corresponding class labels and echo strength (i.e. intensity) values are projected to the ground. In the obtained 2-D class and intensity maps we approximate the top view projections of vehicles by rectangles. Since our tasks are simultaneously the extraction of the rectangle population which describes the position, size and orientation of the vehicles and grouping the vehicles into the traffic segments, we propose a hierarchical, Two-Level Marked Point Process (L2MPP) model for the problem. The output vehicle and traffic segment configurations are extracted by an iterative stochastic optimization algorithm. We have tested the proposed method with real data of a discrete return Lidar sensor providing up to four range measurements for each laser pulse. Using manually annotated Ground Truth information on a data set containing 1009 vehicles, we provide quantitative evaluation results showing that the L2MPP model surpasses two earlier grid-based approaches, a 3-D point-cloud-based process and a single layer MPP solution. The accuracy of the proposed method measured in F-rate is 97% at object level, 83% at pixel level and 95% at group level
