Visuality without form: video-mediated communication and research practice across disciplinary contexts

Visuality is a concept that crosses boundaries of practice and meaning, making it an ideal subject for interdisciplinary research. In this article, we discuss visuality using a fragment from a video meeting of television producers at Swedish Television’s group for programming in Swedish Sign Language. This example argues for the importance of recognizing the diversity of analytical and practice-derived visualities and their effect on the ways in which we interpret cultures. These different visualities have consequences for the methods and means with which we present scholarly research. The role of methods, methodology, and analysis of visual practices in an organizational and bilingual setting are key. We explore the challenges of incorporating deaf visualities, hearing visualities, and different paradigms of interdisciplinary research as necessary when visibility, invisibility, and their materialities are of concern. We conclude that in certain contexts, breaking with disciplinary traditions makes visible that which is otherwise invisible

The Promise and Peril of Parallel Chat in Video Meetings for Work

We report the opportunities and challenges of parallel chat in workrelated video meetings, drawing on a study of Microsoft employees’ remote meeting experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic. We find that parallel chat allows groups to communicate flexibly without interrupting the main conversation, coordinate action around shared resources, and also improves inclusivity. On the other hand, parallel chat can also be distracting, overwhelming, and cause information asymmetries. Further, we find that whether an individual views parallel chat as a net positive in meetings is subject to the complex interactions between meeting type, personal habits, and intentional group practices. We suggest opportunities for tools and practices to capitalise on the strengths of parallel chat and mitigate its weaknesses

Die Video-Interaktions-Analyse

Vor dem Hintergrund einer rasanten Zunahme des Videos als eines Datenerhebungs- und -analyseinstrumentes und der damit verbundenen Visualisierung der sozialwissenschaftlichen Forschung stellt der Beitrag eine vorläufige Typologie visueller Datensorten vor und skizziert eine besondere methodische Vorgehensweise zur qualitativen, interpretativen Analyse von Videodaten: Die Video-Interaktions-Analyse (VIA). Als integrierter Teil einer fokussierten Ethnographie handelt es sich dabei um eine sich an Goffman und die Konversationsanalyse anschließende sequenzielle Vorgehensweise, die sich vorwiegend mit audiovisuellen Aufzeichnungen natürlicher Interaktionen beschäftigt. Die spezifischen Merkmale und methodische Grundzüge dieser Vorgehensweise werden hier bestimmt. Abschließend wird auch die besonderen Probleme einer solchen visuellen Analyse eingegangen und eine zweidimensionale diachrone und diachrone Analyse empfohlen, die etwa durch die Verbindung der beschriebenen Vorgehensweise mit hermeneutischen Verfahren geleistet werden könnte.On the background of a dramatic increase of the use of video as an instrument for data collection and analysis as well, the essay presents a typology of audiovisual data sorts and adumbrates a specific methodological procedure for the qualitative, interpretive analysis of video data: video interaction analysis (VIA). As part and parcel of focused ethnographies, VIA is a sequential procedure based on methods suggested by Goffman and Conversation Analysis. VIA is particularly designed to address records of natural interactions. The essay sketches the specific features and the methodological frame of the procedure. Finally, some problems of VIA are being considered which may be solved by a two-dimensional diachronic and synchronic analysis, which may be attempted by including hermeneutics into VIA

Technik-Ästhetik: Zur Theorie techno-ästhetischer Realität

Von Technik und Ästhetik zu sprechen, heißt, sich bereits begrifflich auf ein Feld einzulassen, das mindestens zwei divergente Perspektiven gemeinsam denkt. Dabei haben das Technische wie das Ästhetische die Bedeutung einer Interdependenz aufzuweisen: Das Technische konstituiert einerseits Funktionen, Formen und Gebrauchsaspekte - ästhetische Zustände evozieren andererseits zeichenhafte Realisierungen, phantasmatische Urteile und wahrnehmungsvermittelte Phänomene des Erscheinens. Die Beiträger*innen des Bandes zeigen, wie bei der Konfrontation von Technik und Ästhetik eine Art Verkopplung und intrinsische Dynamik qua techno-ästhetischer Evokation entstehen kann
