    Framework of Socialisation, Authentic Leadership and Affective Commitment for Construction Professionals

    This paper highlights the human resources (HR) or behaviour-related success factors in construction projects, and these are training, understanding, co-worker support, future prospects, authentic leadership, and affective commitment. There exists discrepancies in existing literature regarding the factor structure of organisational socialisation and authentic leadership. Therefore, this study aims to explore the factor structure of socialisation, authentic leadership and affective commitment. Data was gathered from 301 newly joined construction professionals and  Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) was conducted to examine the factor structure for organisational socialisation, authentic leadership and affective commitment. A measurement model was further developed using the domains of organisational socialisation, authentic leadership and affective commitment. The results of CFA revealed that there exists four zero-order factor structure for organisational socialisation, and one zero-order factor structure for authentic leadership. The study contributes to both the researcher and practitioner communities by integrating the three constructs and validating the factor structure in the new context (i.e. construction). Further, the study contributes towards improving HR processes, namely, training, reward system, and induction process. It also helps in augmenting the authenticity among the project participants

    A CS1 Spatial Skills Intervention and the Impact on Introductory Programming Abilities

    This paper discusses the results of replicating and extending a study performed by Cooper et al. examining the relationship between students’ spatial skills and their success in learning to program. Whereas Cooper et al. worked with high school students participat- ing in a summer program, we worked with college students taking an introductory computing course. Like Cooper et al.’s study, we saw a correlation between a student’s spatial skills and their success in learning computing. More significantly, we saw that after apply- ing an intervention to teach spatial skills, students demonstrated improved performance both on a standard spatial skills assessment as well as on a CS content instrument. We also saw a correlation between students’ enjoyment in computing and improved perfor- mance both on a standard spatial skills assessment and on a CS content instrument, a result not observed by Cooper et al

    Good places for ageing in place : development of objective built environment measures for investigating links with older people's wellbeing

    Background: There is renewed interest in the role of the built environment in public health. Relatively little research to date investigates its impact on healthy ageing. Ageing in place has been adopted as a key strategy for coping with the challenges of longevity. What is needed is a better understanding of how individual characteristics of older people’s residential environments (from front door to wider neighbourhood) contribute to their wellbeing, in order to provide the basis for evidence-based housing/urban design and development of interventions. This research aimed to develop a tool to objectively measure a large range of built environment characteristics, as the basis for a preliminary study of potential relationships with a number of ‘place-related’ functional, emotional and social wellbeing constructs. Methods: Through a review of urban design literature, design documents, and existing measures, a new tool, the NeDeCC (Neighbourhood Design Characteristics Checklist) was developed. It was piloted, refined, and its reliability validated through inter-rater tests. A range of place-related wellbeing constructs were identified and measured through interviews with 200 older people living in a wide variety of rural-urban environments and different types of housing in England. The NeDeCC was used to measure the residential environment of each participant, and significant bivariate relationships with wellbeing variables were identified. Results: The NeDeCC was found to have convincing face and construct validity and good inter-rater and test/ retest reliability, though it would benefit from use of digital data sources such as Google Earth to eliminate the need for on-site survey. The significant relationships found in the study suggest that there may be characteristics of residential environments of potential relevance for older people’s lives that have been overlooked in research to date, and that it may be worthwhile to question some of the assumptions about where and how older people want to live (e.g. villages seem to be positive). They also point to the importance of considering non-linear relationships. Conclusions: The NeDeCC provides the basis for generation of evidence-based design guidance if it is used in prospective controlled studies or ‘natural experiments’ in the future. Ultimately, this will facilitate the creation of better places for ageing in place

    Measures of Health-Related Quality of Life Outcomes in Pediatric Neurosurgery: Literature Review

    Background Improving value in healthcare means optimizing outcomes and minimizing costs. The emerging pay-for-performance era requires understanding of the effect of healthcare services on health-related quality of life (HRQoL). Pediatric and surgical subspecialties have yet to fully integrate HRQoL measures into practice. The present study reviewed and characterized the HRQoL outcome measures across various pediatric neurosurgical diagnoses. Methods A literature review was performed by searching PubMed and Google Scholar with search terms such as “health-related quality of life” and “pediatric neurosurgery” and then including the specific pathologies for which a HRQoL instrument was found (e.g., “health-related quality of life” plus “epilepsy”). Each measurement was evaluated by content and purpose, relative strengths and weaknesses, and validity. Results We reviewed 68 reports. Epilepsy, brain tumor, cerebral palsy, spina bifida, hydrocephalus, and scoliosis were diagnoses found in reported studies that had used disease-specific HRQoL instruments. Information using general HRQoL instruments was also reported. Internal, test–retest, and/or interrater reliability varied across the instruments, as did face, content, concurrent, and/or construct validity. Few instruments were tested enough for robust reliability and validity. Significant variability was found in the usage of these instruments in clinical studies within pediatric neurosurgery. Conclusions The HRQoL instruments used in pediatric neurosurgery are currently without standardized guidelines and thus exhibit high variability in use. Clinicians should support the development and application of these methods to optimize these instruments, promote standardization of research, improve performance measures to reflect clinically modifiable and meaningful outcomes, and, ultimately, lead the national discussion in healthcare quality and patient-centered care

    Developing and validating five-construct model of customer satisfaction in beauty and cosmetic E-commerce

    Customer satisfaction; Determinants; Beauty & Cosmetic; Online shopping; Vietnam; Behavioral economics; International economics; Management; Marketing; Globalization Š 2020 The Author(s)Grounded on the American Customer Satisfaction Framework (ACSF) of Bryant (1995), the European Customer Satisfaction Framework Model (ECSF) of Anderson and Fornell (2000), and Eleven-factor Customer Satisfaction Model of Hokanson (1995), this study develops reliable and valid five constructs of customer satisfaction theoretical model and build up a questionnaire in the unique context of Beauty and Cosmetic Online Shopping in the Vietnamese market. More specifically, we identified five main constructs including 5 implementation constructs (i.e., online shopping experience, customer service, external incentives, security/privacy, and personal characteristics), and one outcome construct (i.e., customer satisfaction). A detailed questionnaire was then developed with items for these constructs along with the questions on the personal characteristics of the respondents. The questionnaire was sent to randomly consumers via online channels including Facebook. The target participants are Vietnamese people who have experience in shopping online products like beauty and cosmetics. Based on 334 full responses have been received, we use Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) to test for 167 observations to ensure that all items in each scale reflected sufficiently the scope of each construct. This technique helps to identify the underlying dimensions of consumer satisfaction. Furthermore, we also employ Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) to validate the constructs and items in questionnaire. To do this, we have used the sample of 167 responses. Finally, together with results from SEM models, our study contributes to providing a reliable and valid questionnaire which fully reflect for our self-constructed theoretical model of five constructs including Online shopping experience (OSE), External incentives (EI), Seller service (SS), and Security/privacy (SP), as well as personal characteristics (PC).     How Does Positive Work-Related Stress Affect the Degree of Innovation Development?

    Many studies sustain that work-related stress exerts pervasive consequences on the employees’ levels of performance, productivity, and wellbeing. However, it remains unclear whether certain levels of stress might lead to positive outcomes regarding employees’ innovativeness. Hence, this paper examines how the five dimensions of work-related stress impact on the employees’ levels of innovation performance. To this aim, this study focused on a sample of 1487 employees from six Italian companies. To test the research hypotheses under assessment, we relied on the use of the partial least squares (PLS) technique. Our results reveal that, in summary, the stressors job autonomy, job demands, and role ambiguity exert a positive and significant impact on the employees’ levels of innovativeness. However, this study failed to find evidence that the supervisors’ support–innovation and colleagues’ support–innovation links are not statistically significant. View Full-Tex

    The influence of individual provider characteristics and attitudes on caesarean section decision-making: a global review

    Caesarean section (CS) rates have risen worldwide in the past two decades, particularly in middle and high-income countries. In addition to changing maternal and health system factors, there is growing evidence that provider factors may contribute to rising unnecessary caesareans. The aim of this review was to assess the evidence for the association between individual provider characteristics, attitudes towards CS and decision-making for CS. A search was conducted in May 2018 in PubMed and Web of Science with 23 papers included in our final review. Our results show that higher anxiety scores and more favourable opinions of CS were associated with increased likelihood of performing CS. These findings highlight a need for appropriate interventions to target provider attitudes towards CS to reduce unnecessary procedures

    Implementing Montana\u27s Indian-Education-for-All Initiative in a K-5 Public School: Implications for Classroom Teaching, Education Policy, and Native Communities

    The Montana legislature’s requirement that public schools implement programs that fulfill the inclusive Indian education intent found in the state constitution is groundbreaking in U.S. educational history. Supporters of the revived Indian Education for All (IEFA) law agree that including Native perspectives in the mainstream curriculum is long overdue. Advocates often frame IEFA as an initiative that will promote transformative understanding of local American Indian tribes. The data presented in this research report relate to a learner-focused assessment of the model K-5 IEFA program initiated at Lewis and Clark Elementary School in Montana. Did this public school-based IEFA program change attitudes toward American Indians among young learners and therefore potentially improve interracial relationships among Indians and non-Indians? To assess the initiative’s impact on student learning and attitudes over two years, one of the authors, working in collaboration with teacher leaders, developed and administered a simple written survey. Survey results indicate that participating students increased their knowledge of the nearby tribe, that the program’s impact was considerable in most attitudinal domains, and that differences in individual educators’ instructional focus shaped learning outcomes in diverse ways that offer lessons about teacher effectiveness in advancing Montana’s education policy affecting Native communities. However, important issues regarding the objectives of IEFA remain to be addressed by Indian and non-Indian advocates and policy makers

    The development of a dietitian selection scale and a comparison of therapeutic and administrative dietitians

    The purposes of this research project were to develop a Dietitian Selection Scale (DSS) and to compare the personality profiles of female therapeutic and administrative dietitians. Both purposes were investigated using the California Psychological Inventory (CPI), and the second purpose, the comparison, was also, investigated using the Vocational Preference Inventory (VPI). Holland\u27s (1973) theory of career selection served as the theoretical base for this study.;Subjects for this study were 250 female registered dietitians. The control group consisted of 145 female registered dietitians attending a state meeting in Virginia, while 105 were respondents from a randomized mailing to female registered dietitians across the nation.;The hypothesis that there would be a significant difference in the response pattern of female registered dietitians and women in general as measured by the empirically developed DSS was accepted. The hypothesis that female therapeutic dietitians would exhibit a significant difference in response pattern from female administrative dietitians as measured by a scale analysis of the VPI was rejected, but one scale on the CPI did differentiate the two groups significantly.;The results indicated that female dietitians can be differentiated from women in general by response pattern to specific items on the CPI and that therapeutic dietitians can be differentiated from administrative dietitians on the scale of Dominance on the CPI
